Information Dynamics in Cognitive, Psychological, Social, and Anomalous Phenomena (Fundamental Theories of Physics, 138)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.47 $In this book we develop various mathematical models of information dynamics, I -dynamics (including the process of thinking), based on methods of classical and quantum physics. The main aim of our investigations is to describe mathematically the phenomenon of consciousness. We would like to realize a kind of Newton-Descartes program (corrected by the lessons of statistical and quantum mechanics) for information processes. Starting from the ideas of Newton and Descartes, in physics there was developed an adequate description of the dynamics of material systems. We would like to develop an analogous mathematical formalism for information and, in particular, mental processes. At the beginning of the 21st century it is clear that it would be impossible to create a deterministic model for general information processes. A deterministic model has to be completed by a corresponding statistical model of information flows and, in particular, flows of minds. It might be that such an information statistical model should have a quantum-like structure.

The News Revolution in England: Cultural Dynamics of Daily Information
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 60.96 $The News Revolution in England: Cultural Dynamics of Daily Information is the first book to analyze the essential feature of periodical media, which is their periodicity. Having to sell the next issue as well as the present one changes the relation between authors and readers--or customers--and subtly shapes the way that everything is reported, whether politics, the arts and science, or social issues. So there are certain biases that are implicit in the dynamics of news production or commodified information, quite apart from the intentions of journalists. With the birth of the commercial periodical in late seventeenth century England, news became a commodity. What constituted news, how it was presented and received, and how people responded to it underwent a fundamental change. Rather than any democratic print revolution, in which the masses suddenly had access to cheap and accessible information, C. John Sommerville shows that the arrival of the commercial press was in fact restrictive, dictating what was discussed and ultimately how it was discussed. The News Revolution in England looks at the history of journalism from an entirely different angle--the effect of the medium rather than the intentions of the journalists. It will be of interest to historians of England, journalism, and news, along with anyone interested in how the media shapes our world and how we come to relate to it.

Dynamics of Performance Management : Constructing Information and Reform
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.53 $Efficiency. Innovation. Results. Accountability. These, advocates claim, are the fruits of performance management. In recent decades government organizations have eagerly embraced the performance model―but the rush to reform has not delivered as promised. Drawing on research from state and federal levels, Moynihan illustrates how governments have emphasized some aspects of performance management―such as building measurement systems to acquire more performance data―but have neglected wider organizational change that would facilitate the use of such information. In his analysis of why and how governments in the United States have made the move to performance systems, Moynihan identifies agency leadership, culture, and resources as keys to better implementation, goal-based learning, and improved outcomes. How do governments use the performance information generated under performance systems? Moynihan develops a model of interactive dialogue to highlight how performance data, which promised to optimize decision making and policy change for the public's benefit, has often been used selectively to serve the interests of particular agencies and individuals, undermining attempts at interagency problem solving and reform.A valuable resource for public administration scholars and administrators, The Dynamics of Performance Management offers fresh insight into how government organizations can better achieve their public service goals.

3D Dynamic Scene Analysis: A Stereo Based Approach (Springer Series in Information Sciences)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 130.81 $This is the first book to treat the analysis of 3D dynamic scenes using a stereovision system. Several approaches are described, for example two different methods for dealing with long and short sequences of images of an unknown environment including an arbitrary number of rigid mobile objects. Results obtained from stereovision systems are found to be superior to those from monocular image systems, which are often very sensitive to noise and therefore of little use in practice. It is shown thatmotion estimation can be further improved by the explicit modeling of uncertainty in geometric objects. The techniques developed in this book have been successfully demonstrated with a large number of real images in the context of visual navigation of a mobile robot.

Process Control: Designing Processes and Control Systems For Dynamic Performance Marlin, Thomas E.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 74.99 $This book identifies the process as the central factor in plant automation and develops theory and practice to achieve good dynamic performance. Approaches are presented for measurement selection, process modifications, control structure design, and algorithm tuning to achieve good performance over a range of operating conditions. The sequence of topics - modeling, single-loop control and tuning, enhancements, multiloop control, and design - builds the student's ability to analyze increasingly complex systems, culminating in multiloop control design. The full complement of fundamental topics is reinforced by realistic process examples, including challenging end-of-chapter problems. Each technology is analyzed to provide guidelines for design and algorithm tuning; this approach demonstrates how fundamentals can lead to excellent practice and encourages the student to develop sound generalizations. The accompanying workbook and software, in the MATLAB environment, enable students to reproduce and extend the solved problems and design cases in the textbook. The simulations enable students to implement the digital implementations of most methods, for example, model identification, PID algorithm, windup protection, cascade, feedforward, and model predictive control.

GIS Algorithms (SAGE Advances in Geographic Information Science and Technology Series) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.98 $Geographic information systems (GIS) have become increasingly important in helping us understand complex social, economic, and natural dynamics where spatial components play a key role. The critical algorithms used in GIS, however, are notoriously difficult to both teach and understand, in part due to the lack of a coherent representation. GIS Algorithms attempts to address this problem by combining rigorous formal language with example case studies and student exercises. Using Python code throughout, Xiao breaks the subject down into three fundamental areas: Geometric Algorithms Spatial Indexing Spatial Analysis and Modelling With its comprehensive coverage of the many algorithms involved, GIS Algorithms is a key new textbook in this complex and critical area of geography.
