The Theater of War: What Ancient Greek Tragedies Can Teach Us Today
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.55 $This is the personal and deeply passionate story of a life devoted to reclaiming the timeless power of an ancient artistic tradition to comfort the afflicted. For years, theater director Bryan Doerries has led an innovative public health project that produces ancient tragedies for current and returned soldiers, addicts, tornado and hurricane survivors, and a wide range of other at-risk people in society. Drawing on these extraordinary firsthand experiences, Doerries clearly and powerfully illustrates the redemptive and therapeutic potential of this classical, timeless art: how, for example, Ajax can help soldiers and their loved ones better understand and grapple with PTSD, or how Prometheus Bound provides new insights into the modern penal system. These plays are revivified not just in how Doerries applies them to communal problems of today, but in the way he translates them himself from the ancient Greek, deftly and expertly rendering enduring truths in contemporary and striking English. The originality and generosity of Doerries’s work is startling, and The Theater of War—wholly unsentimental, but intensely felt and emotionally engaging—is a humane, knowledgeable, and accessible book that will both inspire and enlighten. Tracing a path that links the personal to the artistic to the social and back again, Doerries shows us how suffering and healing are part of a timeless process in which dialogue and empathy are inextricably linked.

Sophocles' Antigone: A New Translation for Today's Audiences and Readers (Ancient Greek Theater Today)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.95 $This new translation of Sophocles’ Antigone, one of the cornerstones of Ancient Greek Tragedy, is meant to satisfy several parameters: (i) above all, to provide a text that can be immediately and easily understood and appreciated by a 21st century, English-speaking audience or reader, (ii) in so doing, to remain as faithful to the text and the spirit of the text as is possible, and (iii) neither to promote nor exclude flexibility in staging, choreography, and interpretation. The translator realizes that this is a task that is by its very nature impossible to perfect, and that usually the quality of any attempt is very much in the eye of the beholder. However, he strongly believes that there is an identifiable gap in affordable translations of Ancient Greek Theater, between those efforts that are virtually incomprehensible as a result of their antiquated vocabulary, awkward syntax, opaque idiom, and/or overwrought poetry, and those that take such liberty with the underlying text as to bear little relationship to the spirit of the original. Oliver Evans hopes to fill that gap, and that this translation will be enjoyed by audiences and readers alike. It is intended to be the first in a series of fresh translations of all the extant plays of Sophocles, perhaps to be followed by translations of Euripides and Aeschylus. Oliver Evans was educated at St. Paul’s School, London, and Oxford University, where he graduated with a Double First and several awards in Classics. The play itself is, of course, the famous tragedy written by Sophocles (497-406BC) in or before 441BC. For more information on Antigone, the translator suggests starting with the entry in Wikipedia and following the references there. There is no introduction or interpretation in this edition.

Rebel Women: Staging Ancient Greek Drama Today (Plays and Playwrights)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.66 $A collection of essays by many distinguished contributors, focused on the portrayal of rebel women in ancient Greek drama.Ancient Greek drama provides the modern stage with a host of powerful female characters who stand in opposition to the patriarchal structures that seek to limit and define them. For contemporary theatre directors their representation serves as a vehicle for examining and illuminating issues of gender, power, family and morality, as germane today as when the plays were first written. Rebel Women brings together essays by leading writers from across different disciplines examining the representation of ancient Greek heroines in their original contexts and on today's stage. Divided into three sections, it considers in turn international productions, Irish versions, and studies of the original texts. The articles explore how such characters as Iphigenia, Medea, Antigone and Clytemnestra have been portrayed in recent times and the challenges and provocation they offer to both contemporary audiencesand dramatists alike. 'Seamus Heaney and Athol Fugard are brought together as contributors by the inspiration that ancient Greek tragedy has offered to them both. There are offerings here on Iphigenia, edea, Antigone, Clytemnestra, film, drama, Greece, Russia ... and especially Ireland. Amidst all this variety, the level of interest and of scholarship are consistently high.' Oliver Taplin, Professor of Classical Languages and Literature, Oxford University

The Ancient Greek Hero in 24 Hours
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.18 $What does it mean to be a hero? The ancient Greeks who gave us Achilles and Odysseus had a very different understanding of the term than we do today. Based on the legendary Harvard course that Gregory Nagy has taught for well over thirty years, The Ancient Greek Hero in 24 Hours explores the roots of Western civilization and offers a masterclass in classical Greek literature. We meet the epic heroes of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, but Nagy also considers the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the songs of Sappho and Pindar, and the dialogues of Plato. Herodotus once said that to read Homer was to be a civilized person. To discover Nagy’s Homer is to be twice civilized.“Fascinating, often ingenious... A valuable synthesis of research finessed over thirty years.”―Times Literary Supplement“Nagy exuberantly reminds his readers that heroes―mortal strivers against fate, against monsters, and...against death itself―form the heart of Greek literature... [He brings] in every variation on the Greek hero, from the wily Theseus to the brawny Hercules to the ‘monolithic’ Achilles to the valiantly conflicted Oedipus.”―Steve Donoghue, Open Letters Monthly

Philosophy Before the Greeks : The Pursuit of Truth in Ancient Babylonia
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.82 $There is a growing recognition that philosophy isn't unique to the West, that it didn't begin only with the classical Greeks, and that Greek philosophy was influenced by Near Eastern traditions. Yet even today there is a widespread assumption that what came before the Greeks was "before philosophy." In Philosophy before the Greeks, Marc Van De Mieroop, an acclaimed historian of the ancient Near East, presents a groundbreaking argument that, for three millennia before the Greeks, one Near Eastern people had a rich and sophisticated tradition of philosophy fully worthy of the name.In the first century BC, the Greek historian Diodorus of Sicily praised the Babylonians for their devotion to philosophy. Showing the justice of Diodorus's comment, this is the first book to argue that there were Babylonian philosophers and that they studied knowledge systematically using a coherent system of logic rooted in the practices of cuneiform script. Van De Mieroop uncovers Babylonian approaches to knowledge in three areas: the study of language, which in its analysis of the written word formed the basis of all logic; the art of divination, which interpreted communications between gods and humans; and the rules of law, which confirmed that royal justice was founded on truth. The result is an innovative intellectual history of the ancient Near Eastern world during the many centuries in which Babylonian philosophers inspired scholars throughout the region―until the first millennium BC, when the breakdown of this cosmopolitan system enabled others, including the Greeks, to develop alternative methods of philosophical reasoning.
