The Fellowship: The Literary Lives of the Inklings: J.R.R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 8.23 $Best Book of June 2015 (The Christian Science Monitor)Book of the Year by the Conference on Christianity and LiteratureC. S. Lewis is the 20th century's most widely read Christian writer and J.R.R. Tolkien its most beloved mythmaker. For three decades, they and their closest associates formed a literary club known as the Inklings, which met every week in Lewis's Oxford rooms and in nearby pubs. They discussed literature, religion, and ideas; read aloud from works in progress; took philosophical rambles in woods and fields; gave one another companionship and criticism; and, in the process, rewrote the cultural history of modern times. In The Fellowship, Philip and Carol Zaleski offer the first complete rendering of the Inklings' lives and works. The result is an extraordinary account of the ideas, affections and vexations that drove the group's most significant members. C. S. Lewis accepts Jesus Christ while riding in the sidecar of his brother's motorcycle, maps the medieval and Renaissance mind, becomes a world-famous evangelist and moral satirist, and creates new forms of religiously attuned fiction while wrestling with personal crises. J.R.R. Tolkien transmutes an invented mythology into gripping story in The Lord of the Rings, while conducting groundbreaking Old English scholarship and elucidating, for family and friends, the Catholic teachings at the heart of his vision. Owen Barfield, a philosopher for whom language is the key to all mysteries, becomes Lewis's favorite sparring partner, and, for a time, Saul Bellow's chosen guru. And Charles Williams, poet, author of "supernatural shockers," and strange acolyte of romantic love, turns his everyday life into a mystical pageant. Romantics who scorned rebellion, fantasists who prized reality, wartime writers who believed in hope, Christians with cosmic reach, the Inklings sought to revitalize literature and faith in the twentieth century's darkest years-and did so in dazzling style.

Black Aviator: The Story of William J. Powell (Smithsonian History of Aviation and Spaceflight Series) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 75.00 $During the 1930s a prominent black entrepreneur and pilot named William J. Powell urged blacks to acquire the skills to become pilots, mechanics, and aviation business leaders, so that they could attain economic power in the air age and break down the barriers of racism.Powell shared his vision of black advancement in his thinly disguised 1934 autobiography, Black Wings, now reissued as Black Aviator after six decades of obscurity. Containing new photographs and historical information on Powell's life and times (1899-1942), the book chronicles the formative part of Powell's career in aviation through the fictional personality of "Bill Brown." The narrative begins with Powell's first airplane ride in Paris in 1927 (three months after Charles Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic) and then moves to Los Angeles, where he pursued his career in aviation full time.Powell worked tirelessly to promote black awareness of aviation, recruiting Duke Ellington, Joe Louis, and other prominent figures as sponsors. Black Aviator recounts how he founded the Bessie Coleman Aero Club to promote flying within the black community, sponsored record-breaking flights, and organized air shows. Powell provides vivid portrayals of early black pilots such as Hubert Fauntleroy Julian, James Herman Banning, and C. Alfred Anderson.Based on real events and individuals, Bill Brown's story describes how black pilots first broke into aviation in the Depression years. An introductory essay by Von Hardesty places Powell's life and work in the larger context of American social history.

Last Amateur : The Life of William J. Stillman
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.78 $The authoritative biography of a nineteenth-century polymath. This fascinating biography tells the story of William J. Stillman (1828–1901), a nineteenth-century polymath. Born and raised in Schenectady, New York, Stillman attended Union College and began his career as a Hudson River School painter after an apprenticeship with Frederic Edwin Church. In the 1850s, he was editor of The Crayon, the most important journal of art criticism in antebellum America. Later, after a stint as an explorer-promoter of the Adirondacks, he became the American consul in Rome during the Civil War. When his diplomatic career brought him to Crete, he developed an interest in archaeology and later produced photographs of the Acropolis, for which he is best known today. In yet another career switch, Stillman became a journalist, serving as a correspondent for The Times of London in Rome and the Balkans. In 1871, he married his second wife, Marie Spartali, a Pre-Raphaelite painter, and continued to write about history and art until his death. One of the later products of the American Enlightenment, he lived a life that intersected with many strands of American and European culture. Stillman can indeed be called “the last amateur.”

Only a Private: A Texan Remembers the Civil War : The Memoirs of William J. Oliphant
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 186.26 $When the Civil War broke out in 1861, 16-year-old William J. Oliphant left Austin and rushed to join Confederate service with thousands of other Texans. Oliphant initially joined the Travis Rifles, and was later mustered into the Sixth Texas Infantry, CSA at Camp Henry E. McCullough, near Victoria, Texas in 1862. Oliphant and the Sixth Texas were sent to Arkansas in May of 1862, where Oliphant saw action in Battle of Arkansas Post. After the surrender of Arkansas Post in 1863, he was sent to an Illinois prison camp. Oliphant was later exchanged and participated in the battles of Missionary Ridge, Ringgold Gap, Pickett's Mill, and Atlanta, where he was again captured. He was exchanged in Virginia in March 1865, but was not able to rejoin his command before the war ended. The young Oliphant then made his way home to Texas, narrowly escaping death at the hands of bandits. His descriptions of the destroyed South offer a poignant reminder of the physical, economic, and psychological devastation of the war. Only a Private provides a first-hand account of the common soldier's point of view of the Civil War. No colonel or general, William Oliphant was, in his own words, "only a private." His unique perspective provides a window into Texas during the first days of the Civil War, as well as first-hand descriptions of battles in Arkansas and throughout the Confederacy, life in a Federal prisoner-of-war camp, and survival in the devastated post-war South. Contains numerous photographs, maps and valuable primary source material, including the Company "G" roster, in which Oliphant served.

The Life of William J. Brown of Providence, R.I. (Revisiting New England: The New Regionalism)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.99 $The son and grandson of slaves owned by abolitionist Moses Brown, William J. Brown was a free African American born in Providence in 1814. Brown published his captivating autobiography, The Life of William J. Brown of Providence, R.I., in 1883. His compelling and insightful story is a memorable portrait of life and society in nineteenth-century New England: his childhood, his unusually good educational opportunities, employment, contemporary race relations, the port's bustling seafaring life, temperance, religion, organized societies, and local and national politics. He wrote of prominent African American contemporaries, including Frederick Douglass and Henry Bibb, and of African American troops in the Civil War. This is an impressively rich text, remarkable for its time and place. Unlike official records and other types of primary sources--frequently written from the opaque, self-interested perspective of upper-middle-class white Americans--this extraordinary memoir provides an authentic window on black experiences in nineteenth-century New England. Expertly framed by Rosalind C. Wiggins's engaging preface and a new scholarly introduction by historian Joanne Pope Melish, The Life of William J. Brown of Providence, R.I. will spellbind readers interested in African American and New England literature, history, and culture.
