R. C. ('Dick') Riley (1921-2006) was one of the country's foremost railway photographers; starting with mono just prior to World War 2, he moved over to colour in the early 1950s, when such film was both expensive and slow. Working in the banking industry gave him the opportunity to travel widely and, aided by his trackside pass and contacts within the railway industry, he was able to access locations and views from which many other photographers were excluded. From his early work through to the end of main line steam in 1968 he took countless thousands of transparencies; over the years a number have been published but there remain a significant number that have yet to see the light of day. This large landscape format book showcases over 200 colour images taken by Dick Riley between the early 1950s and 1968. Whilst the bias will be towards the Southern and Western regions, the book will also include a significant number of illustrations on both the Eastern and London Midland regions. Dick Riley was also a prolific photographer of industrial railways, and the book will include a brief selection featuring these sites, as well as recording aspects such as signs and minutiae, which were largely ignored by other photographers. The book will also include vignettes of these photographs. The text has been compiled by his close friend and executor Rodney Lissenden, who had access to Dick Riley's personal diaries for anecdotal tales relating to the images concerned.

The largest enterprise in the capitalist world between 1920 and 1932, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (German National Railway) was at the center of events in a period of great turmoil in Germany. In the first detailed history of this important organization, Alfred Mierzejewski presents a sophisticated analysis of the Reichsbahn's operations, finances, and political and social roles. In addition, he uses the story of the Reichsbahn to gain new perspectives on modern German economic and political history. Mierzejewski describes and analyzes the beginnings of the national railway in Germany and the problems that it faced. He examines the Reichsbahn's noncapitalistic, "commonweal" approach to economic management and shows how the railway was used to hold Germany together, especially in the face of Bavarian particularism. Mierzejewski's account also provides unparalleled insight into Germany's reparations policies, demonstrating that Germany was fully capable of paying the Dawes annuities and that the government's claims that reparations paid by the Reichsbahn hurt both the railway and Germany were groundless. A second volume will cover the period from 1933 to 1945.

This first volume presents Abteilung “Schönberger” from the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, in the frontlines in 1941 which became SS StuG-Abteilungen“LSSAH”, and in which a young tank commander– Michael Wittmann – began to distinguish himself. We follow the unit during all its engagements. Still in 1941, SS-StuG-Batterie “Reich” engaged in Operation Barbarossa, was the embryo of2 SS-Panzer-Division assault gun group of the “Das Reich” which we also see in operations. We watch the evolution and the engagement of the first two Waffen-SS Divisions’ assault artillery groups with their histories, eye-witness accounts and numerous photographs, most of which areas yet unpublished, including some superb photos of vehicles, as is usual in the books by PierreTiquet. Other volumes will follow presenting the assault gun units from the other Waffen-SS divisions.
