Rust Red : Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 53.54 $A former coal and steel production plant in Duisburg, Germany, the Meiderich Ironworks left the area around it significantly polluted when it was abandoned in 1985. In 1991, Peter Latz’s firm was commissioned to design a public park on the site, but rather than turning the area into a classical garden with beautifying agricultural and forest patterns, Latz embraced the site’s industrial past, retaining many of its structures. Today the Landscape Park Duisburg Nord is one of the world’s most remarkable examples of dealing with the complex legacy of industry. In Rust Red, Latz uses his firsthand knowledge of the project to present an in-depth account of the park’s development. Recounting twelve years of planning and realization, Latz describes how he focused on the multifaceted information system of urban infrastructure and industry to create the park. Essays by renowned collaborators complement his narrative, while three hundred color photographs, sketches, and plans provide additional insight. Revealing the intriguing world that follows industry, Rust Red tells the fascinating story of the park’s transformation on the occasion of its twenty-fifth anniversary.

Format: Paperback
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.38 $This publication documents a little-known temporary artwork. In the winter of 1973/74, Paul Thek (1933–1988) was a guest of the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, where he installed the room-filling environment "Ark, Pyramid – Christmas" ("The Manger")--a development of the legendary "Pyramid" installation realized at Documenta 5 in 1972. This exhibition, organized by the director of the museum at the time, Siegfried Salzmann, was the fourth in Thek’s large-scale projects in Europe, all of which engaged with individualized religious symbols (or what Harald Szeemann termed "Individual Mythologies"). The Christmas season provided Thek with the occasion to present, for the first time, a self-written theater piece in the form of a nativity play featuring children from Duisburg. This book reproduces the museum’s archival materials, offering a reconstruction of the exhibition. It includes an interview with Edwin Klein, who assisted with Thek’s installation.

Bomber Command - Operation Hurricane: The Story of Those who Flew, Fought, and Failed to Return on 14 and 15 October 1944
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 169.86 $On the 14 and 15 October 1944 RAF Bomber Command unleashed one of the Second World War’s most devastating bombardments, targeting the German industrial city of Duisburg. Known as Operation Hurricane, Bomber Command’s maximum effort involved approximately one thousand four-engine heavy bombers on each attack, delivering a whirlwind assault on the enemy’s war machine as the Allied armies edged eastwards towards the Nazi homeland. Never before had the city faced such a massive onslaught – the resulting devastation was unprecedented. This is the story of Operation Hurricane from RAF Bomber Command’s perspective, and that of the numerous crews who flew, fought, and failed to return. Each of the aircraft lost has been investigated in depth; the lives of the crews, the circumstances of their loss, and the identification of the airmen and their respective crash sites. The author also details the investigation into the brutal murder of one particular airman. Marc Hall, a relative of one of those lost on the raid, has pieced together a comprehensive account of this historic attack, utilizing a wealth of eyewitness accounts and veteran and prisoners-of-war recollections, accompanied by numerous previously unpublished photographs.
