Sabers through the Reich: World War II Corps Cavalry from Normandy to the Elbe (Battles and Campaigns Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.28 $In Sabers through the Reich, William Stuart Nance provides the first comprehensive operational history of American corps cavalry in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) during World War II. The corps cavalry had a substantive and direct impact on Allied success in almost every campaign, and served as offensive guards for armies across Europe, conducting reconnaissance, economy of force, and security missions, as well as prisoner of war rescues.

2nd Armored Division: "Hell on Wheels" (Spearhead 10)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 129.33 $The US 2nd Armored Division, nicknamed 'Hell on Wheels', fought with distinction in the ETO and was the first US division to reach the Elbe and to enter Berlin. It was commanded by the charismatic MajorGeneral George S. Patton from January 1941 to February 1942. Elements of 2nd Armored first saw action in North Africa, landing at Casablanca, and later taking part in the fighting at Beja, Tunisia, but the division as a whole did not enter combat until the invasion of Sicily, where it performed well. After the Sicilian campaign, the division trained in England for the invasion of Normandy, landing on D+3, and going into action near Carentan; it would go on to play a significant role in the Falaise Gap battles, subsequently racing across France through Belgium and into Germany at Schimmert on 18 September 1944. The division also played an important role during the Ardennes offensive, blunting the German Fifth Panzer Army's penetration of American lines.

Combat Correspondents - The Baltimore Sun in World War II
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.14 $The Baltimore Sun covered World War II with an outstanding team of combat correspondents, among them three future Pulitzer Prize winners. The correspondents witnessed momentous events: Anzio and Cassino, D-Day, Black Christmas in the Bulge, the crossing of the Rhine, the link up with the Russians on the Elbe, the German surrender at Rheims, the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and the Japanese surrender on the U.S.S. Missouri. They took enormous risks. Price Day was in action at Anzio and Cassino; Holbrook Bradley landed with the 29th Division on the Normandy beaches. Lee McCardell narrowly escaped death when a bomb exploded near his jeep. Howard Norton was on a sub chaser when a Japanese shell killed most of its crew. Philip Heisler’s escort carrier nearly capsized in a typhoon. They filed stories from the front lines of history. Norton scooped the world on the execution of Mussolini. Day and McCardell were among the first to file stories on Nazi atrocities and death camps. The doyen of these correspondents, Mark Watson, wrote prescient articles on military strategy. All of them sent back gritty stories of the endurance and humor of ordinary GIs. This was a time when correspondents wore uniforms, censors could block their stories, and journalists wrote on portable typewriters and traveled dozens of miles to file their copy. Enjoying a personal freedom of movement and decision-making unknown in today’s electronic era, these newspaper men were working at a time when print journalism was the prime medium for news. Their dispatches, which reported the war with the immediacy of real time, make up the core of this book.

Battle of Koniggratz : Prussia's Victory over Austria, 1866
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.44 $Königgrätz, a city overlooking the river Elbe, was a western strongpoint of the Austrian Empire. On the morning of July 3, 1866, Prussia attacked the city against high odds and defeated the Austrian army in a single day, despite the Austrian advantage in heavy artillery and command of the high ground. The fall of Königgrätz transferred power over the German states from Austria to Prussia, marking the beginning of the German nation, a political consequence considered to be among the most important of any conflict in modern history. The battle for the city of Königgrätz—now called Hradec Králové, located in the Czech Republic—was the largest of its time, with nearly half a million troops involved. It was also the first battle where the outcome was directly determined by the availability of new technologies, including the railroad, telegraph, cast steel rifled cannon, and breech-loading rifle. It also marked a lesson in the fallacy of dependence on technology at the expense of sound strategy. In this full account, distinguished historian Gordon A. Craig discusses the state of political affairs surrounding the battle, the personalities involved, the weaponry, and the tactics in order to recreate the battlefield in all its complexity.
