The large animal figures created at the Meissen manufactory between 1731 and 1736 arguably constitute the eighteenth century's supreme artistic and technical achievement in the field of porcelain-making. The animals were commissioned by the elector-king Augustus the Strong for the palace that of all his seats was probably the one closest to his heart: the Japanese Palace in Dresden.Samuel Wittwer's research has revealed a profusion of inter-relations between this fragile porcelain menagerie and the various other animal collections at the Dresden court.  This book does not consider the animal figures in art historical terms alone.  On the contrary, it presents them in their historical and topographical context and traces the manifold relations between the figures and the world in which they came into being.  In so doing it also offers the reader a wealth of insights into the relationships between art, society, and politics at the Dresden court in the second quarter of the eighteenth century.

In this, the second volume of The Papers of Jefferson Davis, the documents cover Davis’ unsuccessful race for the state legislature, his selection as a Democratic state elector, his marriage to Varina Howell, his election to the U.S. House of Representatives, and his departure therefrom to assume command of the First Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican War.In the congressional documents Davis emerges as a hardworking freshman representative who quickly won for himself the respect and esteem of his fellow congressmen. There were, however, notable exceptions. One such exception was Andrew Johnson, a tailor by trade, who strongly resented Davis’ remark on the floor of the House that a “blacksmith or tailor” could not be expected to achieve the same results in battle as a trained military man. The Turckische Cammer once owned by the Electors of Saxony is one of the most important collections of its kind worldwide. Unlike the so-called Turkish Booty' of the late 17th century, the Electors amassed an exotic collection over several centuries that had little to do with the looting engaged in by Saxon troops on campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. Much more important for this collection, which goes back to the 16th century, were diplomatic presents, an active acquisitions policy and works executed on commission. With the re-opening of the Turckische Cammer after a lapse of nearly seventy years, Dresden has gained another world-class museum to complement the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister and the Green Vault. In a survey of the collection, which is, of course, much larger, the catalogue showcases fifty choice pieces from the Ottoman period, featuring costumes, showy weapons and exquisite oriental equestrian accoutrements.
