Two themes unite these works: The use of electronics and the degree of the performer's input. All of the works save one employ electronics, but in each work the electronics are used in very different ways. The performer's input into the works also varies. Two of the works are presented twice, yielding significantly different performances and fascinating comparisons. Christopher Redgate specializes in contemporary repertoire and has performed across Europe, the USA, China and Australia.

Allan Monkhouse, the pioneering engineer, began his career whilst growing up in the bush servicing one of the earliest New Zealand generators. He went on to work in Russia under the Tsars, and then through the Russian revolution, standing in the street beside Lenin in 1917 as he announced his programme, surviving a death sentence and escaping through Siberia. When most people would have retired, he was called to India, and convinced Prime Minister Nehru to back, against opposition, first his finding that India's water power could be increased twelve-fold, and then his claim that the micro-generator he had designed could bring electricity across the Himalayas. After apparent rejection, he installed the first thirty. In 2014 an estimated 105,000 villages are served by such micro-generators across the width of the Himalayas.

Telechron and General Electric pioneered the application of machine age, art deco styling to clock designs, starting with the Paul Frankl designed Modernique. So impressive are many of the designs that over the years they have been incorrectly attributed to such designers as Gilbert Rohde, Russel Wright, and Rockwell Kent. This book sets the record straight, documenting the designers of some 175 models. Readers are introduced to such long forgotten designers as John Rainbault, Ray Patten, and Ivan Bruce whose work is often credited to the "big-name" designers. Over 700 Telechron and General Electric models produced between 1925 and 1955 are chronicled through over 900 photographs and illustrations, 430 in color.
