Breaking Through : Essays, Journals, And Travelogues of Edward F. Ricketts
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 70.27 $Trailblazing marine biologist, visionary conservationist, deep ecology philosopher, Edward F. Ricketts (1897–1948) has reached legendary status in the California mythos. A true polymath and a thinker ahead of his time, Ricketts was a scientist who worked in passionate collaboration with many of his friends―artists, writers, and influential intellectual figures―including, perhaps most famously, John Steinbeck, who once said that Ricketts's mind “had no horizons.” This unprecedented collection, featuring previously unpublished pieces as well as others available for the first time in their original form, reflects the wide scope of Ricketts’s scientific, philosophical, and literary interests during the years he lived and worked on Cannery Row in Monterey, California. These writings, which together illuminate the evolution of Ricketts’s unique, holistic approach to science, include “Verbatim transcription of notes on the Gulf of California trip,” the basic manuscript for Steinbeck’s and Ricketts’s Log from the Sea of Cortez; the essays “The Philosophy of Breaking Through” and “A Spiritual Morphology of Poetry;” several shorter pieces on topics including collecting invertebrates and the impact of modernization on Mexican village life; and more. An engaging critical biography and a number of rare photographs offer a new and richly detailed view of Ricketts’s life.

Edward Hopper: A Journal of His Work
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.28 $A unique book of facsimile pages culled from Hopper's personal ledger books. Edward Hopper, with the help of his wife, Jo, kept scrupulously detailed notes of all his artwork and business transactions in five accountants' ledger books. Here, in a selection of facsimile pages, we see the artist as businessman, recording everything from exhibitions and reviews to sales, commissions, and resales of his varied works. Hopper sketched most of his paintings and prints in these pages, in either pen and ink or pencil. Occasionally he added a printed reproduction as they became available. In addition to all business transactions associated with the work, Jo Hopper wrote descriptions of the colors and materials used, the subject matter, as well as personal anecdotes. In this intriguing volume, we are given a rare glimpse of this often-unseen aspect of an artist's life. We can see clearly the Hoppers' necessity and penchant for methodical record keeping and how they were able to achieve financial security through the artist's work.

Uncle Sam's Camels : The Journal of May Humphreys Stacey Supplemented by the Report of of Edward Fitzgerald Beale
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 231.42 $In 1855, at the urging of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, the U.S. Congress funded an unusual experiment: the importation of camels in order to test their fitness for military purposes in the Southwest. Camels, it was presumed, would fare much better than horses and mules in the desert’s punishing climate and terrain, and therefore could be used to transport supplies to frontier forts more quickly.Lt. Edward Fitzgerald Beale led the nation’s first and only camel corps” expedition from Texas to California in 1857. Joining him was nineteen-year-old May Humphreys Stacey, who kept a detailed journal of their harrowing adventures. In Uncle Sam’s Camels, Lesley reproduces Stacey’s account as well as Lt. Beale’s glowing report on the expedition, in which he frequently comments on the camels’ remarkable endurance. Originally published in 1929, Lesley’s study was one of the first to treat this curiosity in U.S. military history, and it remains the definitive text on the subject.
