Educational Entrepreneurship Today (Educational Innovations Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.33 $In Educational Entrepreneurship Today, Frederick M. Hess and Michael Q. McShane assemble a diverse lineup of high-profile contributors to examine the contexts in which new initiatives in education are taking shape. They inquire into the impact of entrepreneurship on the larger field—including the development and deployment of new technologies—and analyze the incentives, barriers, opportunities, and tensions that support or constrain innovation. Over the past decade, entrepreneurship has moved from the periphery to the center of education reform. Policy measures, philanthropic support, and venture capital increasingly promote initiatives that drive innovation within and outside the traditional education sector. These initiatives have included spectacular successes, like Khan Academy, Teach For America, and Wireless Generation, as well as highly visible failures, like the InBloom data warehouse.Educational Entrepreneurship Today offers critical perspectives on the impact of entrepreneurship and also includes lessons from leading entrepreneurs, in which they use case studies drawn from their own experience to illustrate the realities of leading disruptive change in education and pose guiding questions for the next generation of innovators. In a time of increasing polarization around education policy, this timely, frank, and insightful volume shows how we can begin to create systems in which entrepreneurial ideas and fresh thinking are welcomed, constructively employed, and held accountable for the public good.

Kiev, Jewish Metropolis: A History, 1859-1914 [signed and inscribed by NMM] [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $Populated by urbane Jewish merchants and professionals as well as new arrivals from the shtetl, imperial Kiev was acclaimed for its opportunities for education, culture, employment, and entrepreneurship but cursed for the often pitiless persecution of its Jews. Kiev, Jewish Metropolis limns the history of Kiev Jewry from the official readmission of Jews to the city in 1859 to the outbreak of World War I. It explores the Jewish community’s politics, its leadership struggles, socioeconomic and demographic shifts, religious and cultural sensibilities, and relations with the city's Christian population. Drawing on archival documents, the local press, memoirs, and belles lettres, Natan M. Meir shows Kiev's Jews at work, at leisure, in the synagogue, and engaged in the activities of myriad Jewish organizations and philanthropies.

Rise to Be A People: A Biography of Paul Cuffe (Blacks in the New World) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 100.00 $Based on prodigious transatlantic research, Thomas's study presents Cuffe (1759-1817), the black Quaker ship captain, merchant, and African colonizer, as the most widely publicized and admired black American of his day. Thomas's Cuffe combined entrepreneurship with philanthropy in promoting education and emigration to Africa and in building a network of antislavery supporters. Thomas develops a fuller Cuffe than is available elsewhere, and he moves the discussion of Cuffe's significance away from emigration and missionary endeavors alone, but he is uncritical in ascribing motives to his subject. Still, the book is useful for its treatment of the links between free black and Quaker reformers and for its description of commerce. Recommended for Afro-American and major university libraries.
