Feis na nGleann: A Century of Gaelic Culture in the Antrim Glens
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 101.59 $The Glens of Antrim formed one of the last Irish-speaking areas of Ulster until the early 1900s. Until the opening of the Antrim coast road in the 1850s Irish was universally spoken in the Glens and on Rathlin. The turn of the 19th century saw the Gaelic Revival which in the north of Ireland involved both Unionists and Nationalists in an effort to preserve Irish as a spoken language. It was against this background of cultural renaissance that Feis na nGleann ('The Glens Feis') was founded in 1904 as the first Gaelic cultural festival in east Ulster. That inaugural Feis harnessed the talents of the Glens folk and a group of leading "Big House" figures in the locality, among them Miss Rose Young of Galgorm Castle, Miss Ada McNeill of Cushendun, and Miss Margaret Dobbs. Others included Sir Roger Casement, then a recent convert to Irish nationalism, Eoin MacNeill, Glensman and language revivalist, Francis Joseph Bigger, lawyer and antiquarian, John 'Benmore' Clarke and Joseph Campbell, the Belfast poet. This book traces the origins of Feis na nGleann in that 'crease in time' between Parnell and the 1916 Rising. In a series of scholarly chapters, experts profile the historic founders of the Feis and record the history of Irish in the district. There are special sections on the traditional arts and crafts fostered by the Feis, the once famous Glens toy-making industry, the role of hurling and the rich literary legacy of the Feiseanna. The book is lavishly illustrated with unique contemporary photographs. The result is attractive and readable volume which will appeal to all those interested in the history and culture of the Glens and the fortunes of the Irish language in the north of Ireland.

Yun-Fei Ji: The Empty City
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 67.78 $From a distance, Yun-Fei Ji's traditional brush paintings hark back to the atmospheric landscapes of the Sung Dynasty painters. Step closer though, and Ji's mists are revealed to be toxic clouds, and his craggy mountains are shown to be piles of overflowing garbage and abandoned vehicles. His misty imagery also includes stylized abstractions that may or may not refer to intestines, explosions or bubbling slime. Using traditional materials (inks, Chinese brushes and handmade mulberry paper) Ji employs age-old methods to illuminate historic and contemporary concerns. This full-color monograph/catalogue includes a new thematic group of six large-scale works made especially for the exhibition. Multi-page gatefolds of these paintings are included.

Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 63.74 $This monograph features Beijing-born artist's acclaimed scrolls, sculptures, and drawings. In his stunning impressionistic works, Yun-Fei Ji takes on the thousand-year-old practice of Chinese scroll painting, employing ink on paper as his primary medium, and landscape as his central subject. Rather than adopting the idealism characteristic of traditional scroll painting, Ji presents the gritty reality of life in contemporary China. In this comprehensive monograph, Ji’s works bridge the gap between modernity and tradition. Essays explore themes of community, dislocation, and environmental degradation as well as Chinese folklore and its rapid decline in his native country’s culture.

Cao Fei: I watch that worlds pass by (Daimler Art Collection Artist Book, 7)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.00 $No Brave New World! In the interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist accompanying this first comprehensive European publication on her work, the artist, born in 1978 in south China's Guangzhou province, outlines the initial conditions and perceptual requirements for her work. As the daughter of a sculptor, she traveled with her father, who had the privilege of working in Hong Kong and of being able to repeatedly return there, which allowed her to develop quite early on a fundamental interest in Western (pop-) culture, as well as familiarizing her with the corresponding ways of seeing. During her art and film studies, she remained undecided for quite a long time which path she would follow, which is still reflected the hybridity of her work. The book focuses on three of her complex works, which are realized in a both sculptural and cinematic way. With respect to form, Cao Fei delves into the online world of avatars and pop stars, as well as the film world of zombies and the always seemingly rather romantic models, as known from the world of model railways. Produced, in some instances, over several years, the image of a closed oeuvre emerges that taps into a high critical potential—as in »La Town« where in meticulously constructed model parts, plastic figures are cast from one fire disaster to the next; in »Haze and Fog«, where the dead and the living share a city, New Beijing; or in »RMB City«, a »Second World« of artificial set pieces where avatars live, and sometimes even a groovy Marx-figure appears on the scene. In the wake of her invitations to numerous biennials, last in Venice in 2015, Cao Fei’s work has attracted great interest; it represents the artistic awakening of young transnational Chinese art: the latter probably because her perception of the molochs, in this case Chinese cities, coincides with the future prospects of Western societies.
