Floodplain Modeling Using Hec-ras
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 155.82 $Overview If your work or academic studies involve floodplain management, then a copy of Floodplain Modeling Using HEC-RAS needs to be on your desk. This comprehensive textbook offers expert instruction and practical advice for floodplain modelers and managers. It then goes a step further by reinforcing the concepts presented using the worldwide standard simulation tool HEC-RAS, developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center. In Floodplain Modeling Using HEC-RAS, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers veteran Gary Dyhouse walks you through a complete floodplain study, from the planning stage to determining the floodway. No more wondering which of the vast number of variables to adjust in your model. Get the inside guidance you need to successfully apply HEC-RAS to your projects. Topics covered in this text include: An easy-to-understand introduction to open channel hydraulics Planning floodplain modeling studies with defensible time and cost estimates Modeling bridges, culverts, and other special features Calibrating and operating models for peak performance Modeling floodways, including coverage of FEMA flood insurance guidelines Developing routing information for use in hydrology programs Designing and evaluating channel modifications Analyzing bridge scour About the software included Each book within the Water Modeling Collection from the Bentley Institute Press includes academic-licensed versions of the professional software covered. HEC-Pack for floodplain management includes four industry-standard products developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center. Rivers and Floodplains : Forms, Processes, and Sedimentary Record
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 69.98 $Rivers and Floodplains is concerned with the origin, geometry, water flow, sediment transport, erosion and deposition associated with modern alluvial rivers and floodplains, how they vary in time and space, and how this information is used to interpret deposits of ancient rivers and floodplains. There is specific reference to the types and lifestyles of organisms associated with fluvial environments, human interactions with rivers and floodplains, associated environmental and engineering concerns, as well as the economic aspects of fluvial deposits, particularly the modeling of fluvial hydrocarbon reservoirs and aquifers. Methods of studying rivers and floodplains and their deposits are also discussed. Although basic principles are emphasized, many examples are detailed. Particular emphasis is placed on how an understanding of the nature of modern rivers and floodplains is required before any problems concerning rivers and floodplains, past or present, can be addressed rationally. Rivers and Floodplains is designed as a core text for senior undergraduate and graduate students studying modern or ancient fluvial environments, particularly in earth sciences, environmental sciences and physical geography, but also in civil and agricultural engineering. College teachers, researchers, and practising professionals will also find the book an invaluable reference. Presents a process-based approach, which is relevant to modern curricula. Discusses methods of studying rivers and floodplains and their deposits. Provides many detailed examples throughout the text. Emphasises the basic principles of this subject. As the first synthesis of this entire field, it will be a must-have for all students studying modern or ancient fluvial environments. Teachers, researchers and practising professionals will find this an invaluable reference tool. Rivers and Floodplains will also be of interest to geologists, geographers and engineers.

This Delta, This Land : An Environmental History Of The Yazoo-Mississippi Floodplain
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 42.22 $This Delta, This Land is a comprehensive environmental history of the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta―the first one to place the Delta's economic and cultural history in an environmental context. The Delta, the floodplain between two great rivers in the northwestern corner of Mississippi, has changed enormously since the Civil War. Agriculture, lumbering, and flood-management schemes have transformed it beyond recognition―and beyond any prospects for a full recovery. However, says Mikko Saikku, the 150 years following the Civil War brought greater environmental change than we generally realize. Indeed, the long-term environmental history of the Delta is much more complex than our current view of it, which privileges recent periods rather than presenting the entire continuum. Looking across thousands of years, Saikku examines successive human societies in the Delta, drawing connections between environmental and social problems and noting differences between Native Americans and Euro-Americans in their economies, modes of production, and land-use patterns.Saikku's range of sources is astonishing: travel literature, naturalists' writings, government records, company archives, archaeological data, private correspondence, and more. As he documents how such factors as climate and water levels shaped the Delta, he also reveals the human aspects of the region's natural history, including land reclamation, slave and sharecropper economies, ethnic and racial perceptions of land ownership and stewardship, and even blues music.

Online Orchards 3 ft. River Birch Tree
Vendor: Homedepot.com Price: 50.00 $The River Birch Tree, also known as Water Birch, is native to the floodplains, swamps and riverbanks of the eastern United States. While it thrives in waterlogged soil and is an excellent choice for erosion control, the River Birch is also quite commonly used as an ornamental specimen tree in landscape. This is due to its colorful exfoliating/peeling bark which is particularly noticeable in the winter and attractive weeping serrated light-green leaves. River Birch is also known for being one of the fastest-growing ornamental shade trees which is great for new construction and refreshing more mature landscapes. Known for being very heat-tolerant. In early spring the tree produces copious amounts of sap, which Native Americans collected and boiled to make a sweetener similar to maple syrup.

Lost Villages of Flagstaff Lake (Hardback or Cased Book)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.13 $Permanent settlers began arriving at the village of Flagstaff around the 1820s, drawn by its advantageous location along the Dead River floodplain and the availability of waterpower at the outlet to Flagstaff Pond. In 1923, the Maine legislature passed a bill condemning a 25-mile section of the upper Dead River Valley to inundation, causing the eventual permanent flooding of the villages of Flagstaff, Dead River, and Bigelow. The bill authorized the construction of a dam at the river narrows at Long Falls and the subsequent creation of Flagstaff Lake. The properties in these towns were obtained by the process of eminent domain, and residents were forced to relocate. In the spring of 1950, Flagstaff Lake was officially created when the gates in Long Falls Dam were closed. It remains a controversial project today.
