Henry III: The Great King England Never Knew It Had
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 159.38 $Henry III (1207-72) reigned for 56 years, the longest-serving English monarch until the modern era. Although knighted by William Marshal, he was no warrior king like his uncle Richard the Lionheart. He preferred to feed the poor to making war and would rather spend time with his wife and children than dally with mistresses and lord over round tables. He sought to replace the dull projection of power imported by his Norman predecessors with a more humane and open-hearted monarchy. But his ambition led him to embark on bold foreign policy initiatives to win back the lands and prestige lost by his father King John. This set him at odds with his increasingly insular barons and clergy, now emboldened by the protections of Magna Carta. In one of the great political duels of history, Henry struggled to retain the power and authority of the crown against radical reformers like Simon de Montfort. He emerged victorious, but at a cost both to the kingdom and his reputation among historians.Yet his long rule also saw extraordinary advancements in politics and the arts, from the rise of the parliamentary state and universities to the great cathedrals of the land, including Henry's own enduring achievement, Westminster Abbey.

Four Gothic Kings: The Turbulent History of Medieval England and the Plantagenet Kings (1216-1377 Henry III, Edward I, Edward II, Edward III Se)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.00 $After the sealing of Magna Carta in 1215 and the death of King John the following year, England went forward into the 13th century with great hope. But this hope was soon destroyed. As recorded by contemporary chroniclers, the reigns of the next four Plantagenet monarchs were marked by a series of continuing horrors, of famine and war, disorder and cruelty, culminating with the Black Death - the plague that swept across Europe and killed almost half its population. This book and its chronicles focus on the lives of the four monarchs who reigned from 1216 to 1377: Henry III, pious and shrewd but also cunning and suspicious, who ruled for 56 years; Edward I, a great administrator and military leader, who tamed the Welsh and hammered the Scots; the dissolute Edward II, who was murdered at Berkeley Castle; and Edward III, who with his son the Black Prince led England into the long and destructive Hundred Years War. With the death of Edward III, this turbulent period came to a close. However, the Plantagenet world would prove to have been at the center of great and lasting changes in political power and in social and economic structures. For the first time in history, parliament included commoners as well as the great nobles, and during this time, English emerged as the lingua franca of the nation. Between 1216 and 1377, the Plantagenet dynasty from Anjou became an English family of kings. Along with the original chronicles, 100 explanatory essays and more than 200 illustrations highlight the background of contemporary events, people, customs and traditions. They include information and commentary on women and sex, herbal remedies, music and food, and contain assessments of the personalities of great kings, queens and men of power, as well as the daily lives of ordinary people - bringing to life one of history's most exciting periods.

Henry III: The Rise to Power and Personal Rule, 1207-1258 (Volume 1) (The English Monarchs Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 256.37 $Nine years of age when he came to the throne in 1216, Henry III had to rule within the limits set by the establishment of Magna Carta and the emergence of parliament. Pacific, conciliatory, and deeply religious, Henry brought many years of peace to England and rebuilt Westminster Abbey in honor of his patron saint, Edward the Confessor. He poured money into embellishing his palaces and creating a magnificent court. Yet this investment in "soft power" did not prevent a great revolution in 1258, led by Simon de Montfort, ending Henry's personal rule. Eminent historian David Carpenter brings to life Henry's character and reign as never before. Using source material of unparalleled richness—material that makes it possible to get closer to Henry than any other medieval monarch—Carpenter stresses the king’s achievements as well as his failures while offering an entirely new perspective on the intimate connections between medieval politics and religion.

Henry David Gift: A Collection of Bookbindings - Volume III, A Catalogue of South-European Bindings
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.25 $This much anticipated third and final volume of The Henry Davis Gift focuses on South and East European fine bindings, with additional sections on Oriental and American bindings. It includes many new identifications, and owners and binders are discussed comprehensively. Not only have the decorative features of every binding been described and illustrated, details of structure have also been described, and consequently, it is now possible to compare and contrast bookbinders' practices in the various countries, as evident from this splendid collection of fine bindings. Although this volume focuses on Southern Europe, it also includes bindings from the Middle East, Mexico, and the United States. Two bindings overlooked in Volume II are also included. Similar to Volume II, this volume has been arranged according to country, and then further organized chronologically. In the introduction, Foot explains how her views and methods have changed, and as a result, she has altered specific descriptions and structural elements. The text also contains two indices: of binders and of owners. Parliament Rolls of Medieval England, 1275-1504 : King Richard III, 1484-1485 & King Henry VII, 1485-1487
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 129.67 $The rolls of parliament were the official records of the meetings of the English parliament from the reign of Edward I (1272-1307) until the reign of Henry VII (1485-1509), after which they were superseded by the journals of the lords, and, somewhat later, the commons. This volume contains the only parliament of Richard III - an essential source for his accession in 1483 and for his response to the subsequent rebellion. Henry VII's assertion of his title in 1485 is strikingly different, as is his long act of resumption (a roll in itself) that reveals not only which Yorkist grants he was prepared to continue but also which early grants of his own he was willing to abandon. The 1487 parliament shows the new regime continuing to try and establish itself in the face of continuing opposition. The rolls from the period are reproduced in their entirely, complemented by a full translation of all the texts from the three languages used by the medieval clerks (Latin, Anglo-Norman and Middle English). Dr Rosemary Horrox is Fellow and Director of Studies in History, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

The Letters of Henry James, Volume III: 1883-1895 [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.93 $The third volume of Leon Edel’s superb edition of Henry James’s letters finds the novelist settled in Europe and his expatriation complete. The letters of this time reflect the growth of James’s literary and personal friendships and introduce the reader to the frescoed palazzos, Palladian villas, and great estates of the Roseberys, the Rothschilds, the Bostonian-Venetian Curtises, and the Florentine-American Boott circle. In all his travels, James closely observes the social scene and the dilemmas of the human beings within it. During this fruitful period he writes The Bostonians, The Princess Casamassima, The Tragic Muse, and some thirty-five of his finest international tales.Undermining his success, however, are a devastating series of disappointments. Financial insecurity, an almost paraniod defensiveness following the utter failure of his dramatic efforts, and the deaths of his sister, his friend Robert Louis Stevenson, and his ardent admirer Constance Fenimore Woolson all combine to take him to what he recognizes is the edge of an abyss of personal tragedy. And yet James endures, and throughtout these trials his letters reveal the flourish, the tongue-in-cheek humor, and the social insight that marked his genius. As Edel writes in his Introduction: “The grand style is there, the amusement at the vanities of this world, the insistence that the great ones of the earth lack the imagination he is called upon to supply, and then his boundless affection and empathy for those who have shown him warmth and feeling.”In an appendix Mr. Edel presents four remarkable unpublished letters from Miss Woolson to James. These throw light on their ambiguous relationship and on James’s feelings of guilt and shock after her suicide in Venice.
