The Appalachian Photographs of Doris Ulmann
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.00 $Doris Ulmann (1882 - 1934) was an American photographer, best known for her dignified portraits of the people of Appalachia, particularly craftsmen and musicians such as Jean Ritchie's family (an American folk music singer, songwriter, and Appalachian dulcimer player), made between 1928 and 1934. Ulmann's early work includes a series of portraits of prominent intellectuals, artists and writers: William Butler Yeats, John Dewey, Max Eastman, Sinclair Lewis, Lewis Mumford, Joseph Wood Krutch, Martha Graham, Anna Pavlova, Paul Robeson, and Lillian Gish. From 1927, Ulmann was assisted on her rural travels by John Jacob Niles, a musician and folklorist who collected ballads while Ulmann photographed. In 1932 Ulmann began her most important series, assembling documentation of Appalachian folk arts and crafts for Allen Eaton's landmark 1937 book, Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands. In failing health, she suffered a collapse in August 1934 while working near Asheville, North Carolina and returned to New York. Doris Ulmann died August 28, 1934. The New York Times said, "...these eloquent photographs of our vanishing American peasantry, ridiculed by the middle class as hillbillies, disclose a character that is altogether humbling.....To look at the lined, weathered faces of Christopher Lewis, Ella Webster, and Mrs. Bird Patten is to be reminded of the humanity and rooted communal life of these Southern Americans who are counted now simply as bureaucratic statistics in the poverty program. The recovery of Doris Ulmann's portraiture is typical of Jargon's cultural husbandry." The Jargon Society is an independent press founded by the American poet Jonathan Williams. Jargon has published seminal works of the American literary avant-garde as well as sui generis books of folk art.

A Woman's Weapon: Spirit Possession in the Tale of Genji
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 83.36 $In this subtle and highly original reading of Murasaki Shikibu's eleventh-century classic The Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari), Doris G. Bargen explores the role of possessing spirits (mono no ke) from a female viewpoint. In several key episodes of the Genji, Heian noblewomen (or their mediums) tremble, speak in strange voices, and tear their hair and clothing while under the spell of mono no ke. For literary critics, Genji, the male protagonist, is central to determining the role of these spirits. From this male-centered perspective, female jealousy provides a convenient explanation for the emergence of mono no ke within the polygynous marital system of the Heian aristocracy. Yet this conventional view fails to take into account the work's female authorship and its largely female audience. Relying upon anthropological as well as literary evidence, Doris G. Bargen foregrounds the motives of the possessed character and located mono no ke within the politics of Heian society, interpreting spirit possession as a female strategy adopted to counter male strategies of empowerment. Possessions become "performances" by women attempting to redress the balance of power; they subtly subvert the structure of domination and significantly alter the construction of gender.

The Other Side of the Story
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.03 $According to Molly Hite, a number of influential contemporary women novelists―notably Jean Rhys, Doris Lessing, Alice Walker, and Margaret Atwood―attempt innovations in narrative form that are more radical in their implications than the dominant modes of fictional experimentation characterized as postmodernist. In The Other Side of the Story, Hite makes the point that these innovations, which distinguish the genre she calls contemporary feminist narrative, are more radical precisely because their context is the critique of a culture and a literary tradition apprehended as profoundly masculinist.

Bitter Fruit: The Politics of Black-Korean Conflict in New York City
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.45 $Conflict between Blacks and Koreans has increased in American cities during the past two decades. In this timely book, Claire Jean Kim investigates the most prolonged episode of such conflict―the Flatbush Boycott of 1990, when Black nationalist and Haitian activists led a boycott and picketing campaign against two Korean-owned produce stores in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Drawing on years of in-depth interviewing, Kim helps us understand why Black activists engage in such collective actions and why other parties respond as they do.Kim rejects conventional wisdom that Black-Korean conflict constitutes racial scapegoating, the irrational venting of Black rage on Korean merchants. She argues instead that it is in response to White dominance in American society, which generates a distinct racial order that encourages conflict among different groups, provokes racial resistance, and delegitimates and silences such resistance. Kim asserts that the Flatbush Boycott was part of a larger resurgence of Black Power activism in New York City, that Haitian immigrants mobilized out of overlapping transnational and racial identities, and that Korean Americans responded by launching a countermovement seeking to restore the status quo. Racial protests are inevitable, she says, as long as conditions of racial injustice prevail.

West of the Papal Line
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.00 $This story is about one episode in the long history of conflict between France and Spain during the early years of empire. It relates how a mutiny by bored and starving soldiers, a major military blunder by Jean Ribault, the incredible good luck of Pedro Menéndez, and the power of nature coalesced to crush France's attempt to establish a Huguenot stronghold in Florida as a base to attack Spain's treasure fleets and her West Indian settlements. The slaughter of the Huguenots by Menéndez in 1565 terminated France's colonizing efforts in this part of the New World. The course of Florida history and possibly the history of much of the Americas might have been vastly altered had France been successful.
