The book deals with the three important facets of Otto's work: research into structural systems conducted at the Institute; the application of theoretical findings in architecture at his Warmbronn studio; and Otto's deep interest in the nature of structure in architecture and biology. The first part of the book is devoted to general aspects of Otto's work. it throws light on the historical architectural background and the context in which his work must be seen, especially the ideas of the Futurists, Mies van der Rohe, the Archigram Group and the Metabolists.
