This led to the examination of old newspapers, books, documents of various kinds, as well as traditionary accounts, all of which were most acceptable food for the mind of the hungry gatherer; but he must here admit that they were not satisfying, or only for the moment, as the want still continued for this species of ancient lore.Among these gatherings the family name and position appeared rather attractive, and, of course, received considerable attention, but with no other thought at the time than the author's gratification. However, some few years ago, certain inquiries were made in relation to the de Veaux family, which rather stimulated the author to draw together all which related to the subject then in his possession. A Geneology of Modernism is a study of literary transition in the first two decades of the twentieth-century, a period of extraordinary ferment and great accomplishment, during which the avant-garde gradually consolidated a secure place within English culture. Michael Levenson analyses that complex process by following the successive phases of a literary movement - Impressionist, Imagist, Vorticist, Classicist - as it attempted to formulate the principles on which a new aesthetic might be founded. The emphasis here falls on the ideology of modernism, but throughout the book the ideological question is tied on the one hand to specific literary works and on the other to general movements in philosophy and the fine arts. The major figures under discussion, Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, Ezra Pound, Wyndham Lewis, and T. S. Elliot, are placed in relation to thinkers who have been largely neglected in the history of modernism: Max Stirner, Wilhelm Worringer, Pierre Lasserre, Allen Upward, and Hilaire Belloc. On the Genealogy of Morals (1887) shows him using philsophy, psychology, and classical philology in an effort to give new direction to an ancient discipline.The work consists of three essays.  The first contrasts master morality and slave morality and indicates how the term "good" has widely different meanings in each.  The second inquiry deals with guilt and the bad conscience; the third with ascetic ideals—not only in religion but also in the academy.     Ecce Homo, written in 1898 and first published posthumously in 1908, is Nietzsche's review of his life and works.  It contains chapters on all the books he himself published. "A Genealogy of Modern Architecture" is a reference work on modern architecture by Kenneth Frampton, one of today’s leading architectural theorists. Conceived as a genealogy of twentieth century architecture from 1924 to 2000, it compiles some sixteen comparative analyses of canonical modern buildings ranging from exhibition pavilions and private houses to office buildings and various kinds of public institutions. Despite its widely acknowledged importance in and beyond the thought of the Romantic period, the distinctive concept of the symbol articulated by such writers as Goethe and F. W. J. Schelling in Germany and S. T. Coleridge in England has defied adequate historical explanation. In contrast to previous scholarship, Nicholas Halmi's study provides such an explanation by relating the content of Romantic symbolist theory - often criticized as irrationalist - to the cultural needs of its time. Because its genealogical method eschews a single disciplinary perspective, this study is able to examine the Romantic concept of the symbol in a broader intellectual context than previous scholarship, a context ranging chronologically from classical antiquity to the present and encompassing literary criticism and theory, aesthetics, semiotics, theology, metaphysics, natural philosophy, astronomy, poetry, and the origins of landscape painting. The concept is thus revealed to be a specifically modern response to modern discontents, neither reverting to pre-modern modes of thought nor secularizing Christian theology, but countering Enlightenment dualisms with means bequeathed by the Enlightenment itself. This book seeks, in short, to do for the Romantic symbol what Percy Bysshe Shelley called on poets to do for the world: to lift from it its veil of familiarity.

This is the second volume of a multi-volume work on Virginia genealogies consisting of material from Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, a notable periodical that contained a large number of genealogies that will be of help to the researcher. The four-volume set has all of the family history articles, about 350, that appeared in the magazine from its inception in 1919 until its demise in 1952. This is a significant body of genealogical material, and many of the contributors were leading Virginia researchers. For convenience the articles are arranged in a single alphabetical sequence.
