The ghost talks
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.33 $The ghost of Charlie Michelson comes to life in a revealing, personal and interesting story that makes the ex-publicity director of the Democratic Party a real and vital person. Most people will acknowledge his great contribution to the success of the last three presidential campaigns. This is more than a record of his political career, -- the story of the human problems that arose. He gives revealing sidelights on top men in the party:- Rascob, Farley, House and other party builders; behind the scene incidents, internal feuds, that should help unravel some of the recent political history...He discusses the early Brain Trusters and New Dealers; Raymond McLey he considers one of the most brilliant of them all; he goes into details of his falling out with Secretary Hull and the failure of the World Economic Conference in London. A human, personal story, from early days in Nevada, newspaper life on the Pacific Coast, Hearst, the old World, and his rise to power as the most vociferous and influential political publicity man in history. The interest in this book should not be confined to democrats. ""Charlie the Mike"" has retired from the front line of politics this is no nostalgic looking back, nor is it a cynical ""now it can be told"". He things in perspective, and tells the truth as he sees it, even to criticizing these at the top. A real contribution to political history. Kirkus Review

Ghosts Of The Abyss: A Journey Into The Heart Of The Titanic
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.24 $In the late summer of 2001, James Cameron, the director-producer of the highest-grossing picture in Hollywood history, led a new deep-diving expedition to the wreck of the lost liner Titanic. With him was a team of underwater explorers that included the artist Ken Marschall, the historian Don Lynch, and two actors from the movie, Bill Paxton and Lewis Abernathy (who played Brock Lovett and Lewis Bodine). Their equipment included state-of-the-art digital 3D cameras, a pair of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), and a specially built deep-water lighting platform that illuminated the fabled ship as never before. In a series of historic dives they filmed deep inside the ghostly liner, obtaining haunting, never-before-seen images. In spring 2003, this remarkable journey into the heart of the Titanic will be presented coast-to-coast in a digital 3D giant screen film, Ghosts of the Abyss. For those who will be drawn anew to the story of the Titanic, as well as for those who have never stopped being fascinated by the ship's tragic fate, James Cameron's "Ghosts of the Abyss" will be a revelation in pictures and words. Cameron compellingly describes just what keeps him returning to the Titanic, and the meticulous journals kept during the dives form a dramatic adventure narrative. But what will truly astonish are new, incredibly vivid images from within the ship's staterooms and public rooms, matched with archival images from 1912 and new paintings and diagrams-a "then-and-now gallery" that captures as never before the history, the drama, and the legend of the Titanic.

Ghosts in Maple Leaf Gardens
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 82.95 $The Toronto Maple Leafs have not won a Stanley cup since 1967-a burden that long-suffering fans have regrettably had to bear. Ron Bailey, the new director of player personnel for the Leafs, is more than frustrated with his beloved team, who last won the prestigious title when he was just three. Unfortunately, Ron worries that the cynical Canadian fans and media who fear it may be another forty years before the Leafs win another one might be right. Just as he is about to give up hope, Bailey accidentally uncovers a possible reason for the Leafs' long drought-a curse that has been supposedly placed on the team by the father of Dale McCaine, a former player who, due to tragic circumstances, never had the opportunity to play for a cup. As Bailey's curiosity peaks, he asks for a meeting with the feisty and feeble Doug McCaine-who asks for a second chance for his deceased son to play for the Stanley Cup in Maple Leaf Gardens. Only then will he lift his curse. In this sports adventure, a young hockey director must orchestrate the game of the century as the spirits of former Leafs' greats to band together to help a player's dreams come true.

Lists of Manuscripts Formerly in Peterborough Abbey Library (Cambridge Library Collection - History of Printing, Publishing and Libraries)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.46 $M. R. James (1862-1936) is probably best remembered as a writer of chilling ghost stories, but he was an outstanding scholar of medieval literature and palaeography, who served both as Provost of King's College, Cambridge, and as Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and many of his stories reflect his academic background. His detailed descriptive catalogues of manuscripts owned by colleges, cathedrals and museums are still of value to scholars today. First published in 1929, this book lists over 300 separate volumes which were part of the library of Peterborough Abbey before the Dissolution. James reconstructs this list from sources including lists of books bequeathed to the Abbey, ancient catalogues, and extant books which can be identified as belonging to the library in the medieval period. He also provides a short analysis of his sources. Now reissued, this book will be welcomed by librarians and researchers alike.
