Les uvres d'André Gide échappent aux classifications et tout regroupement thématique est plus ou moins aléatoire. Celui que propose ce volume de la Pléiade a le mérite d'offrir un portrait très complet de l'auteur des Faux-monnayeurs, plus nuancé encore que celui que propose son célèbre Journal. On y retrouve l'intellectuel engagé des grands voyages politiques dans Retour de l'URSS mais aussi l'homme : certains témoignages plus intimes éclairent le parcours familial et individuel de Gide comme Si le grain ne meurt où l'auteur évoque la découverte de son homosexualité ou son mariage avec sa cousine, fournissant bon nombre de clefs pour la compréhension de son uvre romanesque. Deux textes peut-être moins connus renforcent l'intérêt de ce volume, Et nunc manet in te où Gide célèbre le souvenir de sa femme, Madeleine, et Ainsi soit-il qui constitue une sorte de testament littéraire. À 80 ans, estimant qu'à son âge "il est permis de se laisser aller un peu", l'auteur entreprend de repasser toute sa vie au crible avec le regard que donne l'expérience mais aussi avec une sincérité poignante et une sorte de détachement particulièrement émouvant.

Through close readings of his memoirs, novels, and political tracts, Gide's Bent interrogates both the political content of Gide's ways of reflecting on his homosexuality and the ways his sexuality inflected his political interests. One of the first modern writers to be "out," Gide used his writings during this period to do more than simply publicize his homosexuality. He also wrote in a way that reveals sexuality itself as an arena that challenges easy distinctions between public and private. His writing thus addresses not only the psychoanalytic, but also the social and even political foundations to the formation of any private sexual subjectivity; it further considers the ways personal, private struggles might be implicated in or lead on to larger public engagements. Gide knew and corresponded with many of the major literary figures of his day, from Mallarmé to Oscar Wilde. Though a Communist, his critical account of Soviet Russia in Return from the USSR earned him the enmity of the Left. A lifelong advocate of moral and political freedom and justice, he was a proscribed writer on the Vatican's infamous "Index." Self-published most of his life, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1947, at the age of 77. An avowed homosexual, he nonetheless married his cousin, and though their marriage was unconsummated, at 53 he fathered a daughter for a friend. Alan Sheridan's book is a literary biography of Gide, an intimate portrait of the reluctantly public man, whose work was deeply and inextricably entangled with his life.
