The Thieves of Golgotha
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.17 $One event has had more influence on Western culture than almost any other in history: the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. For 2,000 years the world has sought to better know, and to better understand, this man and His message. But what about the two criminals who were crucified alongside Jesus on that historic day? Who were these men who were tied by fate to one of history's most extraordinary teachers? Little or nothing has been told of their story. The Thieves of Golgotha is an intensely dramatic portrayal of these two felons and their final days: Nikos, a free-born Greek sold into Roman slavery by his father, and Azriel, an unrepentant, agnostic Galilean. In prison they meet Bartholomew, a follower of Jesus, whose unshakeable faith gives them pause, and Barabbas, the Judean who would be released so that Jesus could fulfill His destiny. From their prison window, they observe the trial with Pilate; and finally they meet Jesus on the crosses of Golgotha.

The Shotgun Arcana (Golgotha, 2)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.98 $R. S. Belcher's debut novel, The Six-Gun Tarot, was enthusiastically greeted by critics and readers, who praised its wildly inventive mixture of dark fantasy, steampunk, and the Wild West. Now Belcher returns to Golgotha, Nevada, a bustling frontier town that hides more than its fair share of unnatural secrets.1870. A haven for the blessed and the damned, including a fallen angel, a mad scientist, a pirate queen, and a deputy who is kin to coyotes, Golgotha has come through many nightmarish trials, but now an army of thirty-two outlaws, lunatics, serial killers, and cannibals are converging on the town, drawn by a grisly relic that dates back to the Donner Party...and the dawn of humanity.Sheriff Jon Highfather and his deputies already have their hands full dealing with train robbers, a mysterious series of brutal murders, and the usual outbreaks of weirdness. But with thirty-two of the most vicious killers on Earth riding into Golgotha in just a few day's time, the town and its people will be tested as never before--and some of them will never be the same. The Shotgun Arcana is even more spectacularly ambitious and imaginative than The Six-Gun Tarot, and confirms R. S. Belcher's status as a rising star.

The Sign of the Cross: From Golgotha to Genocide
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 138.00 $This book presents a unique effort to create a new understanding of the Christian sign of the cross. At its core, it traces the conscious and unconscious influence of this visual symbol through time. What began as the crucifixion of a Jewish troublemaker in Roman-occupied Judea in the first century eventually gave rise to a broad spectrum of readings of the instrument used to accomplish such a punishment, a cross. The author argues that Jesus was a provocative, grandiose masochist whose suffering and death initially signified redemption for believers. This idea gradually morphed into a Christian sense of freedom to persecute and wage war against non-believers, however, as can be seen in the Crusades ("wars of the cross"). Many believers even construed the murder of their savior as a crime perpetrated by "the Jews," and this paranoid notion culminated in the mass murder of European Jews under the sign of the Nazi hooked cross (Hakenkreuz). Rancour-Laferriere’s book is expertly written and argued; it will be readable to a large audience because it touches on many areas of controversy, interest, and scholarship. The work is critical, but not unfair; it employs psychoanalysis, art history (the study of the symbol of the cross in works of art), religion and religious texts, and world history generally. The interweaving of these various themes is what gives this work its ability to draw in readers—and will ultimately be what keeps the reader interested through the conclusion.
