Edmund Goulding's Dark Victory: Hollywood's Genius Bad Boy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.48 $Edmund Goulding’s Dark Victory: Hollywood’s Genius Bad Boy is the first biography ever written about this eccentric genius of early-twentieth-century filmmaking. Goulding (1891–1959) was by turns a writer, producer, composer, and actor, but it is as a director that he made an indelible impression. He is most remembered today as the director of Grand Hotel, the great Event Movie of the Depression. At the dawn of sound, he wrote the story for the Academy Award–winning musical The Broadway Melody and collaborated memorably with Gloria Swanson and Joseph Kennedy for The Trespasser. He excelled at anti-war drama (White Banners, The Dawn Patrol, We Are Not Alone), fantastic Bette Davis weepies (Dark Victory, The Old Maid, The Great Lie), lilting romantic dramas (The Constant Nymph, Claudia), big-budget literary adaptations (The Razor’s Edge), and even film noir (Nightmare Alley). The London-born Goulding was a complicated and contradictory man whose notorious orgies, bisexuality, drinking, and drug addictions were whispered about in Hollywood for years. Yet his well-crafted plots and compelling characters set a new standard in American cinema and had a profound influence on the future of filmmaking.

Who's Been Living in Your Head?
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.45 $Who’s Been Living in Your Head? is a serious little book with a big payoff: ridding ourselves of the critics, the blamers, the regretters, the nags, and all of those other voices that crowd our heads and get in the way of success. As Mary Goulding profiles a cast of internal demons and demagogues (generally universal in nature), most of us will recognize the accusations of "Not good enough," "You’ll never get it right," "Now, you’ve really screwed things up," and other negative messages. But Goulding’s playful exercises and imaginings are designed to help us diminish the power of the internal monsters that are triggered in times of stress and uncertainty – and to replace them with allies that will come to our immediate aid if we know how to call upon them. Where once the reflex was, "Oh no, not again!" Goulding teaches a new response: "Yup, I know this one, and I can deal!" Who’s Been Living in Your Head? was first published in 1985. The current text has been updated and all of the illustrations have been newly created for the 2006 publication.

The Light In The Window (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.64 $In Ireland, 1951, the young June Goulding took up a position as midwife in a home for unmarried mothers run by the Sacred Heart nuns. What she witnessed there was to haunt her for the next fifty years. It was a place of secrets, lies and cruelty. A place where women picked grass by hand and tarred roads whilst heavily pregnant. Where they were denied any contact with the outside world; denied basic medical treatment and abused for their 'sins'; where, after the birth, they were forced into hard labour in the convent for three years. But worst of all was that the young women were expected to raise their babies during these three years so that they could then be sold—given up for adoption in exchange for a donation to the nuns. Shocked by the nuns' inhumane treatment of the frightened young women, June risked her job to bring some light into their dark lives. June's memoir tells the story of twelve women's experiences in this home and of the hardships they endured, but also the kindness she offered them, and the hope she was able to bring.

Peacemonger C
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 77.00 $Marrack Goulding joined the United Nations as the Under-Secretary-General in charge of peacekeeping operations in 1986, at a time of intense optimism. With the thawing of the Cold War it seemed that at last the UN could concentrate on the real issues affecting the world: preventing and resolving conflict and fighting poverty, disease, injustice and crime. At first there were spectacular successes - the withdrawl of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, the Iran-Iraq ceasefire, the liberation of Kuwait, and peace settlements in Namibia, Angola, El Salvador, Cambodia and Mozambique. The UN, it seemed, could do no wrong. But by 1993 the bubble had burst, and the UN's credibility had been seriously undermined by its failure to halt the bloodshed in Angola, Bosnia and Somalia. Meanwhile, spending on peacekeeping had risen more than tenfold, from 260 million to 2.7 billion dollars. In 1993 an exhausted Goulding was transferred by Secretary Boutros-Gali to head the UN's political department. In this account of seven years of peacekeeping, Marrack Goulding gives the reader an insider's view of what went wrong and also of what the UN achieved during this critical period, of what it was like to be on the front line of US peacekeeping activities, and also to work behind the scenes with two very different Secretaries-General, Javier Perez de Cuellar and Boutros Boutros-Gali. In this thought-provoking account of an organization in crisis, the author pulls no punches, but instead readily admits that many of the mistakes were my mistakes - I was as intoxicated as everyone else.
