The Book of Nature in Antiquity and the Middle Ages (groningen Studies in Cultural Change, 16)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 4.85 $From 22-25 May, 1999, the University of Groningen hosted an international conference on 'The Book of Nature. Continuity and change in European and American attitudes towards the natural world'. From Antiquity down to our own time, theologians, philosophers and scientists have often compared nature to a book, which might, under the right circumstances, be read and interpreted in order to come closer to the 'Author' of nature, God. The 'reading' of this book was not regarded as mere idle curiosity, but it was seen as leading to a deeper understanding of God's wisdom and power, and it culturally legitimated and promoted a positive attitude towards nature and its study. A selection of the papers which were delivered at the conference has been edited in two volumes. The first deals with the perception of the Book of Nature in Antiquity and the Middle Ages; the second volume is devoted to the history of the concept in early modern and modern history.

Digital atlas of traditional agricultural practices and food processing (Groningen Archaeological Studies)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 371.00 $This atlas is intended as a resource, not just for archaeobotanists hoping to reconstruct past foodways, but also for other archaeologists, palaeoecologists, ethnographers, and agricultural historians. Documenting an era of actual rural community practices in relation to local land use, it also provides unique material for rural sociologists, landscape ecologists, and agricultural technologists. The Digital atlas of traditional agricultural practices and food processing documents the various processes involved in the production of food-from working the fields through to processing the crops for food, fodder, and other purposes. The atlas aims to define and describe these various processes unambiguously by using a standardized vocabulary and by explicitly taking into account the intention behind each process. Illustrated with more than 3,000 photographs and numerous films documenting 20 years of field observation in the Mediterranean area, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent, the atlas also includes detailed case studies of the practices and processes involving grapes, olives, date palms, barley, and wheat. Many of these processes are part of the intangible cultural heritage of agriculture that is now rapidly disappearing. The books contain full color photographs as well as indexes on plant name and subject. The website includes both photographs and films, which can be examined in more detail using the site's extensive search tools. This is a 3-Volume set.

James VI and I, Literature and Scotland: Tides of Change, 1567-1625: 47 (Groningen Studies in Cultural Change)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 64.13 $This volume offers a broadly conceived sequence of perspectives on cultural change, principally in Scotland and from Scottish perspectives, during the long reign of King James VI and I. The contributors to this volume include established and new scholars in early modern history and literary studies from Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, as well as Canada and the United States. From the perspectives they provide, the cultural changes of the reign of James VI and I emerge out of a colloquy between the king and his realms, a colloquy in which each of the participants is undergoing a transformation. The essays in this volume explore the locations and circumstances in which literary activity proliferates around and beyond James's court. They also shed light on Scottish culture after James's accession to the English throne in 1603. The contested phenomenon of Scottish literature in the latter decades of James's rule warrants attention by those who are interested in cultural change as a means of adaptation to political dislocation. The evident experimentation in new and traditional literary forms is arguably such a means, as is the elaboration of stylistic affinities between allied writers. At various points in Scottish society at the outset of the seventeenth century, such experiments and affinities have their own sustaining and transformative value.
