Groundwater and Seepage (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.04 $The movement of groundwater is a basic part of soil mechanics. It is an important part of almost every area of civil engineering, agronomy, geology, irrigation, and reclamation. Moreover, the logical structure of its theory appeals to engineering scientists and applied mathematicians. This book aims primarily at providing the engineer with an organized and analytical approach to the solutions of seepage problems and an understanding of the design and analysis of earth structures that impound water. It can be used for advanced courses in civil, hydraulic, agricultural, and foundation engineering, and will prove useful to consulting engineers — or any public or private agency responsible for building or maintaining water storage or control systems.Among the special features of this book are its coverage of previously unavailable Russian work in the field, an extensive appendix of concepts in advanced engineering mathematics needed to deal with physical flow systems, and numerous completely worked-out and solved examples coupled with over 200 problems of varying difficulty.

Groundwaters : A Century of Art by Self-Taught and Outsider Artists
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 48.68 $More than 100 years of unschooled artistic genius is gathered in this wide-ranging survey that will elight and inform Outsider Art’s rapidly growing audience. Visionary art, art brut, art of the insane, na*ve art, vernacular art, "raw vision"—what do all these and many other categories describe? An art made outside the boundaries of official culture, first recognized more than a century ago by German psychiatrists who appreciated the profound artistic expression in the work of institutionalized patients. Promoted by brilliant museum curators like Alfred Barr and artists like Jean Dubuffet, such work became a wellspring of modern and contemporary art. This volume bringstogether works by twelve of the most influential self-taught artists to emerge during the past century. Each represents a facet of the outsider art phenomenon, from mental patients like Adolf Wölfli and Mart'n Ram'rez, through vernacular masters like Bill Traylor and Thornton Dial, to artists who seem to be in touch with other worlds, such as Madge Gill and Henry Darger. Related artists are featured along with each key figure, allowing a fuller picture to emerge. This book presents a narrative of the history ofoutsider art, clarifies predominant theoretical issues, and draws comparisons with the modernist tradition. It brings into focus the enormous contributions self-taught artists have made to ourunderstanding of creative genius and presents them in a book that will enthrall anyone interested in Outsider Art.

Groundwater and the Environment: Applications for the Global Community
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 250.42 $Historically, water has been treated as an inexhaustible resource. However, with the growth of population and development of industry and agriculture, freshwater demand has increased drastically, and its shortage felt in roughly 60% of the Earth. As early as 1931, renowned Russian scholar A.P. Karpansky wrote: "Water is not only a mineral resource, not only a means for developing agriculture. Water is a real culture bearer, it is a living blood, that creates life where there was none".Groundwater and the Environment: Remediation Applications and the Global Community covers one of the most important ecological problems - the impact on the environment of intensive groundwater pumping out. Drawing on more than a quarter century of study, Zektser analyses and makes conclusions about groundwater exploitation throughout the world. He focuses on the close connection of groundwater to the environment - its affect on surface water streams, reservoirs, seas, landscapes, and vegetation. The author demonstrates the importance of groundwater to the potable water supply, and its interaction with the environment. He stresses the significance of groundwater as a mineral resource. He provides techniques for assessing and mapping natural groundwater resources and develops these principles for studying water and hydrochemicals in coastal zones. In the last twenty years, the global awareness of groundwater as one of the most important natural resources has grown. Any changes in the groundwater causes changes in the environment. Groundwater and the Environment: Remediation Applications and the Global Community increases your ability to predict the possible changes to the environment and to follow the principle: "When using - protect, when protecting - use!"

Groundwater Hydraulics and Pollutant Transport
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 70.62 $This rigorous and comprehensive text provides fundamental information geared to students in either engineering or natural sciences courses dealing with groundwater, including subsurface fluid flow, subsurface contamination, and pollutant transport. Charbeneau views the application of groundwater hydraulics and pollutant transport as a quantitative field. Although quantitative methods are exact, the fields of study are usually homogeneous; laboratory and field methods provide estimates for ideal (not real) fields. What impact does the use of ideal fields have on model predictions? The unknown answer places the study of subsurface flow of water and chemical mass transport in a prime position for continued research—and this readily accessible text opens the door to that research. Outstanding features include: 1) comprehensive, rigorous, and highly accessible coverage that includes information on groundwater flow, well hydraulics, field methods for parameter estimation, hydrologic relationships between surface water and groundwater hydrology, mass transport of contaminants by advection, diffusion and dispersion, and special problems posed by nonaqueous phase liquids (oils); 2) strong focus on applications that empowers readers with knowledge and methodologies that they can use in real, day-to-day practices; 3) integrates 66 worked examples and 178 problems; 4) examines standard software being used in the industry today to expose the reader to the USGS MODFLOW model (the most widely used numerical simulation model for groundwater flow) and the USGS MOC3D. Groundwater in Ethiopia
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 172.34 $This book provides a comprehensive description of groundwater resources in Ethiopia and its various dimensions (groundwater as resource, environmental functions, and socioeconomics). The prevailing knowledge of groundwater resources in Ethiopia (or elsewhere in Sub Saharan Africa) was based on geological and stratigraphic framework known nearly four decades ago (mainly 1960's and 70's). Thanks to the substantial geoscientific research since the 70's a new set of relevant geological/stratigrahpic data has been created that helps to re-define our understanding of groundwater resources in Africa as a whole and in Ethiopia in particular: a) For the first time the basement aquifer of Ethiopia has been described hydrogeologically based on genesis of regoliths (deep weathering and striping history); clear regional difference in groundwater potential is shown for the first time; comparative accounty has been given regarding groundwater occurrence in the generally low grade basement rocks of Ethiopia (Arabian Nubian shield) and high grade basement rocks of the rest of Africa. b) For the first time groundwater occurrence in multilayred sedimentary rocks account for spatial variation in degree of karstification; deformation history, and stratigraphy. c) The vast volcanic aquifers of Ethiopia which have previously classified based on their ages are now reclassified based on age, morphology (eg. groundwater in plateau volcanics, groundwater in shield volcanics) and aquifer structure. d) The loose alluvio lacustrine sediments which were known as least extensive in previous works based on areal cover are in fact shown to host the most voluminous groundwater resources in Ethiopia. These aquifers have now been described based on their geomorphology, extent, and genesis. The aim of this book is to use these newly created knowledge to redefine the understanding of groundwater resources in Ethiopia.
