The World in Guangzhou: Africans and Other Foreigners in South China's Global Marketplace
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.01 $Only decades ago, the population of Guangzhou was almost wholly Chinese. Today, it is a truly global city, a place where people from around the world go to make new lives, find themselves, or further their careers. A large number of these migrants are small-scale traders from Africa who deal in Chinese goods—often knockoffs or copies of high-end branded items—to send back to their home countries. In The World in Guangzhou, Gordon Mathews explores the question of how the city became a center of “low-end globalization” and shows what we can learn from that experience about similar transformations elsewhere in the world. Through detailed ethnographic portraits, Mathews reveals a world of globalization based on informality, reputation, and trust rather than on formal contracts. How, he asks, can such informal relationships emerge between two groups—Chinese and sub-Saharan Africans—that don't share a common language, culture, or religion? And what happens when Africans move beyond their status as temporary residents and begin to put down roots and establish families? Full of unforgettable characters, The World in Guangzhou presents a compelling account of globalization at ground level and offers a look into the future of urban life as transnational connections continue to remake cities around the world.

Mirage
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.85 $The young son of the Chinese traders' association head, who dealt with foreign merchants in the port of Guangzhou, is suddenly burdened with the responsibility of his powerful family. A latter-day Baoyu, but with far stronger sexual impulses, this son must learn to tame his libido while conducting himself prudently in Guangzhou society. This little-known novel, titled Shenlou zhi, is translated here for the first time. Published in 1804, it is the earliest novel to deal with the opium trade and is closely connected to events that occurred in Guangzhou and Huizhou just before its publication: the arrival of a new superintendent of customs in Guangzhou and the outbreak of rebellion in Huizhou. This strikingly original work advances the culture of adolescence first depicted in Honglou meng and showcases, in its account of the rebellion, the romantic conventions of Shuihu zhuan.

Global Undergrounds : Exploring Cities Within
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.51 $Rest your eyes long enough on the skylines of Delhi, Guangzhou, Jakarta—even Chicago or London—and you will see the same remarkable transformation, building after building going up with the breakneck speed of twenty-first-century urbanization. But there is something else just as transformative that you won’t see: sprawling networks of tunnels rooting these cities into the earth. Global Undergrounds offers a richly illustrated exploration of these subterranean spaces, charting their global reach and the profound—but often unseen—effects they have on human life. The authors shine their headlamps into an astonishing diversity of manmade underground environments, including subway systems, sewers, communications pipelines, storage facilities, and even shelters. There they find not only an extraordinary range of architectural approaches to underground construction but also a host of different cultural meanings. Underground places can evoke fear or hope; they can serve as sites of memory, places of work, or the hidden headquarters of resistance movements. They are places that can tell a city’s oldest stories or foresee its most distant futures. They are places—ultimately—of both incredible depth and breadth, crucial to all of us topside who work as urban planners, geographers, architects, engineers, or any of us who take subway trains or enjoy fresh water from a faucet. Indeed, as the authors demonstrate, the constant flux within urban undergrounds—the nonstop circulation of people, substances, and energy—serves all city dwellers in myriad ways, not just with the logistics of day-to-day life but as a crucial part of a city’s mythology.

Cao Fei: I watch that worlds pass by (Daimler Art Collection Artist Book, 7)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.00 $No Brave New World! In the interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist accompanying this first comprehensive European publication on her work, the artist, born in 1978 in south China's Guangzhou province, outlines the initial conditions and perceptual requirements for her work. As the daughter of a sculptor, she traveled with her father, who had the privilege of working in Hong Kong and of being able to repeatedly return there, which allowed her to develop quite early on a fundamental interest in Western (pop-) culture, as well as familiarizing her with the corresponding ways of seeing. During her art and film studies, she remained undecided for quite a long time which path she would follow, which is still reflected the hybridity of her work. The book focuses on three of her complex works, which are realized in a both sculptural and cinematic way. With respect to form, Cao Fei delves into the online world of avatars and pop stars, as well as the film world of zombies and the always seemingly rather romantic models, as known from the world of model railways. Produced, in some instances, over several years, the image of a closed oeuvre emerges that taps into a high critical potential—as in »La Town« where in meticulously constructed model parts, plastic figures are cast from one fire disaster to the next; in »Haze and Fog«, where the dead and the living share a city, New Beijing; or in »RMB City«, a »Second World« of artificial set pieces where avatars live, and sometimes even a groovy Marx-figure appears on the scene. In the wake of her invitations to numerous biennials, last in Venice in 2015, Cao Fei’s work has attracted great interest; it represents the artistic awakening of young transnational Chinese art: the latter probably because her perception of the molochs, in this case Chinese cities, coincides with the future prospects of Western societies.

Offshoring of American Jobs: What Response from U.S. Economic Policy? (Alvin Hansen Symposium on Public Policy at Harvard Unviersit)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.29 $Two leading economists discuss a range of issues relating to the “offshoring” of American jobs, from free trade to unemployment levels. It is no surprise that many fearful American workers see the call center operator in Bangalore or the factory worker in Guangzhou as a threat to their jobs. The emergence of China and India (along with other, smaller developing countries) as economic powers has doubled the supply of labor to the integrated world economy. Economic theory suggests that such a dramatic increase in the supply of labor without an accompanying increase in the supply of capital is likely to exert downward pressure on wages for workers already in the integrated world economy, and wages for most workers in the United States have indeed stagnated or declined. In this book, leading economists Jagdish Bhagwati and Alan S. Blinder offer their perspectives on how the outsourcing of labor and the shifting of jobs to lower-wage countries affect the U.S. economy and what, if any, policy responses are required. Bhagwati, in his colorful and pithy style, focuses on globalization and free trade, while Blinder, erudite and witty, addresses the significance of labor market adjustment caused by trade. Bhagwati's and Blinder's contributions are followed by comments from economists Richard Freedman, Douglas A. Irwin, Lori G. Kletzer, and Robert Z. Lawrence. Bhagwati and Blinder then respond separately to the issues raised. Benjamin Friedman, who edited this volume (and organized the symposium that inspired it), provides an introduction.
