Gunther Rall: Luftwaffe Ace & NATO General
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 46.77 $Gunther Rall, Luftwaffe fighter ace and NATO general, waited fifty years before authorizing this biography. It spans a childhood in a defeated country, his rise to third-ranking ace of all time with 275 victories, three meetings with Hitler, and a distinguished post-war career. The book vividly describes aerial dogfights, a mid-air collision, promotion to squadron leader at the age of 22, and wing-commander at 27. Rall talks of his wife’s efforts to smuggle Jews out of Germany, the struggle to survive in brutal Russian winters, and his days as an American prisoner of war. He tells of his test pilot service for the U.S. Air Force’s F-104 Starfighter supersonic jet, and his appointment as Chief of the new German Air Force. This is the biography of a man’s life during turbulent times before, during, and after World War II.

Gunther Pluschow : Airman, Escaper, Explorer
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.88 $Gunther Plüschow of the German Imperial Navy holds a unique place in history - during the First World War he was the only German prisoner of war ever to escape from the British mainland and make it all the way back to the Fatherland. Yet, although his daring break for freedom in 1915 is astonishing in its own right, Plüschow was much more than simply an escaped POW. He was also a fearless aviator who flew against the British and Japanese in the Far East, and he was an explorer. After the war, he set sail for the southernmost tip of South America and became the first man to fly over Tierra del Fuego. He continued to explore what was then a largely unknown region of the world until his tragic death in 1931, when his parachute failed to open following a midair accident in Patagonia. In 'Gunther Plüschow: Airman, Escaper, Explorer,' Anton Rippon tells this extraordinary tale in vivid detail. It is a tale that would do justice to the best adventure fiction - except that every word of it is true.

Gunther Schuller: A Life in Pursuit of Music and Beauty
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 63.12 $Simultaneously the memoir of a famed composer, conductor, and music educator, and an important historical sourcebook on the American musical scene during the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, the autobiography of Gunther Schuller chronicles the first thirty-five years of this multifaceted and expansive figure's life and work. Schuller began composing music at an early age and joined the Cincinnati Symphony as its principal French horn player at seventeen. Since then he has written for many major orchestras and his work has earned him a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant and the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 for his large-scale orchestral piece Of Reminiscences and Reflections. Perhaps most famously, Schuller contributed to a new stylistic blend between progressive factions of jazz and classical music, for which he coined the term "Third Stream," and collaborated with John Lewis, the Modern Jazz Quartet, and others in the development of this style. In this exquisitely detailed reflection on his early influences, experiences of good fortune, and powers of curiosity, as well as firsthand recounting of critical cultural and social moments and major movers of the jazz world, Schuller here beautifully and honestly narrates a life lived beyond limits. Gunther Schuller has been on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and Yale University; he was, for many years, head of contemporary music activities (succeeding Aaron Copland) and Director of the Tanglewood Music Center, and served as president of the New England Conservatory. He is the author of The Swing Era: The Development of Jazz, 1930-1945; Early Jazz: Its Roots and Musical Development; The Compleat Conductor, and many other books.
