Pieter Claesz: Master of Haarlem Still Life
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 197.83 $Pieter Claesz is one of the most important still-life painters of the Dutch seventeenth century. His work is noted for the realistic portrayal of the various elements of the still-life, almost to the point of being tangible. The sobriety preached at the time (from around 1630 onwards) is expressed in the monochrome pallet of his modest little banquets and breakfasts. His humble ingredients: bread, cheese, wine, a half-eaten herring, offered in pewter, glass, and porcelain tablewares, seldom varied. His still lifes were balanced, detailed, and tranquil. In 1620, Claesz took up residence in Haarlem where he founded a school of still-life painting. This book focuses on the period 1620-1645 in which Claesz developed the still-life to perfection. He was an artist that transformed the daily and the mundane into a momentous scene emanating a radiant beauty, using the simplest of means. Approximately fifty works are shown that well represent this important artist's evolution.

The Frans Hals Phenomenon
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.25 $Frans Hals (1580–1666) is, like Rembrandt and Vermeer, one of the greats of the Dutch Golden Age. Hals primarily made his name with his lively, virtuoso portraiture made in the bustling, prosperous city of Haarlem: group portraits of high-ranking gentlemen and more informal scenes of drunkards, laughing children and musicians. He was admired by artists such as van Gogh, Édouard Manet, Max Liebermann and James Abbott McNeill Whistler as the first modern painter. This book acquaints the reader with the Dutch master in an accessible manner: what did he look like, who were his predecessors and contemporaries, and what makes him so unique? The first overview of the life and work of Hals written for a broad audience, Frans Hals is affordably priced and richly illustrated with many details and reproductions of 69 of Hals' most famous works selected from international collections.

Tramp for the Lord
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.22 $Continuing from her bestseller The Hiding Place, Corrie Ten Boom’s inspirational life story proves that miracles do happen. In 1940, Corrie ten Boom was living with her father and sister above their watch shop in Haarlem when their country was invaded. Armed with the gift of their faith and their belief in doing what was right, this devoutly Christian family provided sanctuary for persecuted Jews. Before long, the Nazis captured Corrie and her family and sent them to a concentration camp, where Corrie lost both her sister and father. But remarkably, throughout this turbulent time, from her near-destitute days in postwar New York to her heart-stopping adventures in Africa, Corrie sustained the faith in God that helped her become one of the most beloved evangelists of her time.“Although the threads of my life have often seemed knotted, I know, by faith, that on the other side of the embroidery there is a crown. As I have walked the world—a tramp for the Lord—I have learned a few lessons in God’s great classroom.”

Pieter Saenredam: The Painter And His Time
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.00 $Fascinated with Buildings -- with their spaces, the light that plays around them, their human uses -- the Dutch painter Pieter Saenredam became the first great architectural portraitist and one of the greatest artists of the seventeenth century. The dean of the Haarlem painters guild, Saenredam depicted existing structures, especially churches, with a clarity of vision that grew from precise observation and an unprecedented understanding of the perspective techniques he learned from architects and engineers -- skills that seemed abstruse to most artists and lay people of the day. His paintings, works of great poetic beauty, carry an apparent objectivity that has made them invaluable to architectural historians and a source of deep fascination for such modern writers as Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes. Yet they are marked by a sensitivity of drawing and coloring that is unmistakably Saenredam's. This beautiful and important volume explores the art and life of Pieter Saenredam, placing both very much within the context of seventeenth-century Holland. With particular attention to the cultural, religious, and political life of the time, the elegantly written and authoritative text tells us the story of his family, his career, and his art. The authors have been able to paint for us an engaging and precise account of Saenredam's life and, by extension, that of Holland during the dazzling zenith of its economic and cultural power. Featuring splendid reproductions of the artist's complete oeuvre, including full-page color images of every painting, this book assembles all that is known about Saenredam, including important new material presented here for the first time. Accompanying the text is a complete catalog of his work, illustrated by plans of the churches he painted. These provide us with fascinating insights into Saenredam's working methods and the extent to which the apparent hyper-realism of his work was in fact a carefully manipulated appearance of reality.

Frans Hals
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 66.85 $Frans Hals helped to make the 17th century into what has been called Holland's Golden Age. During his long life and career, spent in the small towm of Haarlem, near Amsterdam he created the vivid characterizations of his contemporaries reproduced in this book - merchants, a tramp, burgomasters, urchins, regents, officers and sergeants of the local civic guard companies. Not only did he recieve high praise from writers of the time, but his lively brushwork won him the admiration of the Impressionists more than two centuries later. His ability to penetrate the outward appearance of his sitters and reveal their innermost personalities marks him as a masterly and profound portraitist. This volume aims to free him from his cramping image as a painter of lighthearted gaiety and places him instead among the greatest masters of colour and light. By juxtaposing Hals's work with that of his contemporaries and by describing the artistic climate in Haarlem at the time, the author reveals the artist's true originality.

Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 92.01 $This publication presents 139 drawings and three prints from a recently rediscovered portion of the Koenigs Collection--one of the world's most important pre-war private collections of drawings, assembled in 1920-1930 by the Haarlem-based art collector Franz Koenigs (1881-1941). In 1940, part of the collection fell into the hands of German occupiers, and after WWII ended, they were taken by the Red Army as spoils, and were eventually rediscovered in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow in 1993. Includes works by old masters: Jost Amman, Sebald Beham, Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein the Elder and the Younger, Hans Baldung Grien, Adam Elsheimer, Wolf Huber, Augustin Hirschvogel and others. In his introduction, Dr. Albert Elen, Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, describes the history of the Koenigs Collection and highlights some of the masterpieces.

Adriaen Brouwer. Master of Emotions: Between Rubens and Rembrandt
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 1,747.92 $Adriaen Brouwer was born around 1604 in Oudenaarde. Recent archival research has now confirmed this. At an early age, Brouwer moved to the Northern Netherlands, where he spent time in Gouda, Haarlem and Amsterdam. He lived out his final years in Antwerp, where he died in 1638. Even though his life was short and turbulent, this remarkable master left behind an impressive oeuvre, small in scale but of outstanding quality. Varied and innovative: these are the words that best describe his work. From an art-historical perspective, Brouwer's paintings are of exceptional importance: as a groundbreaking master, he forms a bridge between the Bruegelian tradition of the 16th century and the genre and landscape art of the 17th century. His artistic virtuosity and the different layers of meaning in his work make him one of the most fascinating artists of the 17th century in the Low Countries. Brouwer's fame in his own time and the appreciation he enjoyed from other masters like Rubens, Rembrandt and Van Dyck stands in sharp contrast to the manner in which he is viewed today, where he still remains largely unknown to the general public. Adriaen Brouwer. Master of Emotions hopes to change this perception. Katrien Lichtert is curator of this ambitious exhibition. She has gathered around her an international team of art historians, who have analyzed and explained in depth the various aspects of Brouwer's work. The result is a book that finally does justice to the master of emotions. The book is published to coincide with the exhibition in Oudenaarde (15 September - 16 December 2018). Twenty-seven works by Brouwer from various private and public collections from all over Europe and the United States have been brought together for the very first time in Oudenaarde, the artist's native city: a once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity.
