The investigation of late antique statuary lies at the intersection of various scholarly disciplines studying the ancient world. Late antique statues are an example of a slowly dying genre, i.e. sculpture in the round, to which particular importance is attached, perhaps precisely because fewer and fewer such statues were being made. Statues set up in public are an important index of the continuity of civic practices in Late Antiquity; statues in the private sphere demonstrate the longevity of classical mythological themes during the transition to the Middle Ages. The intellectual quality of inscriptions on statue bases confirms the general picture of an elite that rejoiced in education, while the mutilation and destruction of portraits simultaneously attest to a fear of statues. These are only a few aspects of the significance and differing understandings of statuary in Late Antiquity that are discussed by archaeologists, historians, and art historians in this volume. In the process, questions not just of the chronology of statues and the formation of statue collections, but also of contextualization in both the private and the public spheres are addressed. Particular attention is paid to the reasons for the end of the production of statues, and to the question of which forms of representation took their place.

This book makes available major texts in the Christian apocalyptic literature form the 4th to the 16th centuries. The apocalyptic tradition is that of traditional prophecy based on revelation and concerned with the end of the world. Even an age such as ours characterized by its scientific and rationalistic outlook has strong elements of literal apocalypticism found in fundamentalist and charismatic groups. The popular success of Hal Lindsey's The Late Great Planet Earth is evidence of this. Also the present hunger for apocalypse has adopted a variety of secular disguises typified by Heilbroner's An Inquiry into the Human Prospect. Contemporary theologians like Kasemann, Pannenberg, Rahner, Moltmann and others have devoted much of their work to the meaning of apocalyptic thought. This is a collection which can show the traditional roots of this contemporary phenomenon. Iulius Africanus has rightly been called the 'Father of Christian Chronography'. His world chronicle is one of the few works of Christian literature pioneering a new genre. Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages mainly articulated their reflection on history in the form of the world chronicle. The work has not been preserved in its entirety; the extant fragments have to be laboriously pieced together from the works of later authors. To date, there has not been a critical edition of this material, and the edition in use today dates back nearly 200 years (J.M. Routh 1814). This new edition in the GCS series closes an old gap in the programme of this series- and at the same time marks a new beginning, because this is the first edition ever in this series to be published with an English translation. The edition establishes a completely new foundation for our knowledge of Early Christian historical thinking, and in addition provides an important component in our understanding of an important epoch, the 'Imperial Crisis' of the 3rd century, in which the new world of Late Antiquity began to develop out of the Hellenic-Roman heritage.
