Conversations with Jim Harrison (Literary Conversations Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.51 $Jim Harrison (b. 1937) is well known for his blunt, brave style in prose, poetry, screenplays, and nonfiction. In Conversations with Jim Harrison, the Michigan-born writer's directness and passion shine throughout. Conversations with Jim Harrison is the first-ever collection of interviews by this well-known, prolific writer whose books include twenty-two volumes of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction published over a period of thirty-six years. In addition to standard literary forms, he has written sporting essays, reviews, literary journalism, food columns, and almost twenty screenplays. Harrison, a writer devoted to small presses and independent bookstores, has a formidable reputation as a recluse and defender of his privacy. However, he has been open to interviews in America and abroad, particularly in France, where he is very popular. Conversations with Jim Harrison features interviews given between 1976 and 1999. Although the conversations vary in length, most are traditional questions and answers. In these Harrison has the opportunity to develop his responses fully and cover a wider range of topics than he can in the briefer, profile pieces. Harrison discusses his peripatetic early life, his desire to be a poet since he was sixteen, and his subsequent "quadra schizoid" attraction to writing poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and screenplays. A literary outsider who prefers rural life Harrison talks in detail about his colorful, eventful life. He also explores the mutual enrichment he received from nature and civilization. He talks specifically about a number of his important books-- including Wolf, Legends of the Fall, Sundog, Warlock, and The Road Home. Harrison speaks eloquently about habits of mind, aesthetic choices, intellectual resources, and psychological contexts in his writing. By turns thoughtful, cantankerous, witty, and erudite, his voice reveals a man fully given over to the single-minded pursuit of the art

Numbers: An Exegetical Commentary
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.13 $R. K. Harrison was one of the leading evangelical Old Testament scholars of the twentieth century. Well known for his Introduction to the Old Testament and his work as general editor of the New International Commentary on the Old Testament series, he also produced several valuable commentaries. In this volume, he applies his considerable skills to interpreting the book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Pentateuch."The book of Numbers is of pivotal importance for all Old Testament study because it covers the formative period of Israel's communal and religious life," notes Harrison in the introduction. "During this period, Israel's religious life was shaped by the promulgation of many laws from God that would establish the nature of her worship and prepare her for a settled community life beyond the confines of the wilderness."Based on the Hebrew text, Harrison's insightful commentary provides a translation for each pericope, in-depth textual notes, explanations, and exposition. A concise introduction focuses on the place of Numbers in the Pentateuch and the wider canon, as well as its structure, compilation, authorship, and both textual and interpretive histories. Exposition sections interact with theological, archaeological, and historical scholarship. The primary theme of the commentary is that Numbers represents a covenant-renewal document whose historical narratives graphically describe the Israelites' experiences and difficulties as Yahweh's chosen people.

Fighting for Equality: A Life of May Wright Sewall
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 4.97 $Famed Indiana author Booth Tarkington once took on the task of naming three of Indianapolis's most outstanding citizens. Two of the three he named--former president Benjamin Harrison and legendary poet James Whitcomb Riley--were well-known people. The third, however, was someone whose memorable accomplishments have become lost to history--educator, woman's rights pioneer, and peace activist May Wright Sewall. Written by award-winning author and historian Ray E. Boomhower, Fighting for Equality: A Life of May Wright Sewall, a biography aimed at young readers, showcases Sewall's important contributions to the history of Indianapolis, Indiana, the United States, and the world. A woman who had the "organizing touch," Sewall helped to establish such Indianapolis institutions as the Girls' Classical School, the Indianapolis Woman's Club, the Contemporary Club, the Art Association of Indianapolis (today known as the Indianapolis Museum of Art), and the Indianapolis Propylaeum. Sewall also worked tirelessly on behalf of rights for women in the United States--and around the globe--during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She served as a valuable ally to such national suffrage leaders as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and gave the woman's movement a worldwide focus through her pioneering involvement with the American National Council of Women and the International Council of Women. After working on behalf of peace as a delegate on millionaire automaker Henry Ford's failed Peace Trip in 1915, Sewall shocked her friends by releasing a book telling of her communications beyond the grave with her deceased husband, Theodore Sewall. She related her remarkable experiences with spiritualism in her book Neither Dead nor Sleeping, published by Bobbs-Merrill of Indianapolis in 1920 just a few months before Sewall's own death.

War in East Texas: Regulators vs. Moderators
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.45 $From 1840 through 1844 East Texas was wracked by murderous violence between Regulator and Moderator factions. More than thirty men were killed in assassinations, lynchings, ambushes, street fights, and pitched battles. The sheriff of Harrison County was murdered, and so was the founder of Marshall, as well as a former district judge. Senator Robert Potter, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, was slain by Regulators near his Caddo Lake home. Courts ceased to operate and anarchy reigned in Shelby County, Panola District, and Harrison County. Only the personal intervention of President Sam Houston and an invasion of the militia of the Republic of Texas halted the bloodletting. The Regulator-Moderator War was the first and largest of the many blood feuds of Texas. Bill O’Neal includes rosters of names of the Regulator and Moderator factions arranged by the counties in which the individuals were associated, along with a roster of the victims of the war.

The Art of Mining: Thomas Hair's Watercolours of the Great Northern Coalfield
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 65.84 $Thomas Harrison Hair (1810-1875) made paintings of the coal mines of North-East England in preparation for his book of etchings: "Views of the Collieries in the Counties of Northumberland and Durham, 1844". These delicate and evocative colour images of the Great Northern Coalfield vividly capture the scenes that the artist witnessed on his travels through the mining communities of the North-East. War between Russia and China
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 73.53 $Harrison E. Salisbury probably knows Russia better than any other living American correspondent, having traveled widely and frequently through almost every part of the Soviet Union, including the long-sealed-off regions of Siberia, the sub-Arctic, and Central Asia as well as the Volga country and the Ukraine. He has also covered the entire periphery of China, traveling more than 25,000 miles along China's frontiers from the jungles of Southeast Asia to the bristling Siberian-Chinese border. His first assignment in Russia was as head of the United Press bureau in Moscow in 1944. After joining The New York Times in 1949 he became their Moscow correspondent and remained there for the next five years. Out of his observations during this period grew his celebrated series for the Times, "Russia Re-Viewed," which brought him the 1955 Pulitzer Prize. He subsequently wrote two books dealing with the same period, American in Russia (1955) and Moscow Journal--The End of Stalin (1961). His recently published The 900 Days: The Siege of Leningrad was widely acclaimed and an important best-seller.As a result of his reports Mr. Salisbury was barred from Russia for five years, and was not allowed to return to the country until 1959. At that time he stayed for nearly six months, traveling thousands of miles within the Soviet Union. His 1960 book, To Moscow and Beyond, was a result of this trip. He has since revisited Russia in 1961-62, 1966, 1967, and 1969.
