Elizabeth Buffum Chace and Lillie Chace Wyman: A Century of Abolitionist, Suffragist and Workers' Rights Activism Stevens, Elizabeth C.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 125.00 $At her death she was hailed as "the conscience of Rhode Island": Elizabeth Buffum Chace’s life (1806–1899) of public activism spanned sixty years. Having fought to abolish slavery in the years before the Civil War, Chace spearheaded the drive for women’s suffrage in Rhode Island in the last decades of the 19th century. She was an associate of radical activists William Lloyd Garrison and Lucy Stone and she advocated for the rights of women and children toiling in her husband’s factories. Her daughter—one of ten children—Lillie Chace Wyman (1847–1929), was an activist-writer and published short stories on social issues in Atlantic Monthly and other periodicals. An outspoken advocate of racial equality, Wyman kept the legacy of the radical antislavery movement of her mother’s generation alive into the twentieth century. Since neither Chace nor Wyman left behind a collection of personal papers, this mother-daughter biography is the product of Stevens’ extensive research into public and private archives to locate documents that illuminate the lives of these two remarkable women. By looking at 19th century American women’s history through the lens of this activist pair, Stevens reveals some of the connections between the public and private lives of activists and examines a relationship that was at once nurturing, confining, stifling and enriching.

Steven Raichlen's BBQ USA: 425 Fiery Recipes from All Across America
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.29 $Steven Raichlen, a national barbecue treasure and author of The Barbecue! Bible, How to Grill, and other books in the Barbecue! Bible series, embarks on a quest to find the soul of American barbecue, from barbecue-belt classics-Lone Star Brisket, Lexington Pulled Pork, K.C. Pepper Rub, Tennessee Mop Sauce-to the grilling genius of backyards, tailgate parties, competitions, and local restaurants. In 450 recipes covering every state as well as Canada and Puerto Rico, BBQ USA celebrates the best of regional live-fire cooking. Finger-lickin' or highfalutin; smoked, rubbed, mopped, or pulled; cooked in minutes or slaved over all through the night, American barbecue is where fire meets obsession. There's grill-crazy California, where everything gets fired up - dates, Caesar salad, lamb shanks, mussels. Latin-influenced Florida, with its Chimichurri Game Hens and Mojo-Marinated Pork on Sugar Cane. Maple syrup flavors the grilled fare of Vermont; Wisconsin throws its kielbasa over the coals; Georgia barbecues Vidalias; and Hawaii makes its pineapples sing. Accompanying the recipes are hundreds of tips, techniques, sidebars, and pit stops. It's a coast-to-coast extravaganza, from soup (grilled, chilled, and served in shooters) to nuts (yes, barbecued peanuts, from Kentucky).

Archetype Revisited: An Updated Natural History of the Self. Anthony Stevens. Ingles. [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 47.51 $Archetype: A Natural History of the Self, first published in 1982 was a ground-breaking book; the first to explore the connections between Jung's archetypes and evolutionary disciplines such as ethology and sociobiology, and an excellent introduction to the archetypes in theory and practical application as well.C.G. Jung's 'archetypes of the collective unconscious' have traditionally remained the property of analytical psychology, and have commonly been dismissed as 'mystical' by scientists. But Jung himself described them as biological entities, which, if they exist at all, must be amenable to empirical study. In the work of Bowlby and Lorenz, and in recent studies of the bilateral brain, Dr Anthony Stevens has discovered the key to opening up this long-ignored scientific approach to the archetypes, originally envisaged by Jung himself. At last, in a creative leap made possible by the cross-fertilisation of several specialist disciplines, psychiatry can be integrated with psychology, with ethology and biology. The result is an immensely enriched science of human behaviour. In this revised, updated edition, Anthony Stevens considers the enormous cultural, social and intellectual changes that have taken place in the past 20 years, and includes:* An updated chapter on The Archetypal Masculine and Feminine, reflecting recent research findings and developments in the thinking of feminists* Commentary on the intrusion of neo-Darwinian thinking into psychology and psychiatry* Analysis of what has happened to the archetype in the past 20 years in terms of our understanding of it and our responses to it

A Liberated Mind
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.28 $Over the last 35 years, Steven C. Hayes and his colleagues have developed Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with many hundreds of studies supporting the impact of his approach on everything from chronic pain to weight loss to prejudice and bigotry. A Liberated Mind is the summary of Steven's life's work which will teach readers how to live better, happier and more fulfilled lives by applying the six key processes of ACT. Put together these processes teach us to pivot- to "defuse" rather than fuse with our thoughts; to see life from a new perspective; and to discover our chosen values, those qualities of being that fuel meaning. Steve shares fascinating research results like how ACT techniques decreased typing errors on a clerical test or showed that positive affirmations actually increase negative emotion. And he weaves them with stories of clients and colleagues as well as his own riveting story of healing himself of a severe panic disorder, which is how the idea of psychological flexibility was born. A Liberated Mind is a powerful and important book about a new form of psychology, destined to become a modern classic of narrative psychology on par with Daring Greatly and Rising Strong by Brene Brown, or Carol Dweck's Mindset.

Evolution and Contextual Behavioral Science
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 61.16 $What do evolutionary science and contextual behavioral science have in common? Edited by David Sloan Wilson and Steven C. Hayes, this groundbreaking book offers a glimpse into the histories of these two schools of thought, and provides a sound rationale for their reintegration.Evolutionary science (ES) provides a unifying theoretical framework for the biological sciences, and is increasingly being applied to the human-related sciences. Meanwhile, contextual behavioral science (CBS) seeks to understand the history and function of human behavior in the context of everyday life where behaviors occur, and to influence behavior in a practical sense. This volume seeks to integrate these two bodies of knowledge that have developed largely independently. In Evolution and Contextual Behavioral Science, two renowned experts in their fields argue why ES and CBS are intrinsically linked, as well as why their reintegration—or, reunification—is essential. The main purpose of this book is to continue to move CBS under the umbrella of ES, and to help evolutionary scientists understand how working alongside contextual behavioral scientists can foster both the development of ES principles and their application to practical situations.Rather than the sequential relationship that is typically imagined between these two schools of thought, this volume envisions a parallel relationship between ES and CBS, where science can best influence positive change in the real world.
