Beéche, the book contains a magnificent selection of Greek royal photos, all from the collections of Queen Olga, Queen Sophie, Queen Elisabeth, Queen Frederica, as well as other members of this amazing family, such as Princess Nicholas of Greece and Queen Mother Helen of Romania. Under the title of Elleniki Dynazteia, this book was first published in Greek several years. Our English language version changed the order of some of the photos, includes detailed captions and a new and a very detailed family tree. The book is 204 pages long and filled with nearly 200 excellent photos of Greek and related royalty.

The Ionian city of Priene, the most extensively excavated Hellenistic city in western Asia Minor, was in its day a model of town planning. It was sited according to principles corresponding to Aristotle's description in the Politics of the ideal city of 5,000, laid out on a grid of the type developed by the famous Hippodamus of the nearby city of Miletus, and ornamented with buildings designed by Pythius, who was known for his holistic approach to architecture. Priene provides the researcher with an unusually clear and complete picture of life in an ancient Greek city of the late Classical and Hellenistic period. This study, a collaboration of Greek scholars under the scientific direction of Nikos A. Dontas at the Foundation of the Hellenic World and Professor Wolfram Hoepfner of the University of Berlin, first published in 2000 and now appearing in its Second Edition, presents for the first time a comprehensive look at the architecture of the city, combining material from both the first excavation of 1894 and more recent work at the site. An examination of the relationship between writing and orality which proposes that culture flourishes when competition among media emphasizes the strength of each.Lentz builds on Eric Havelock’s Preface to Plato, providing concrete evidence for Havelock’s hypothesis on the importance of writing to the origins of Greek philosophy. He focuses on the interaction between the abstract thought and verbatim precision that writing reinforced and the memory and oral performance skills that were at the heart of the oral culture.In each chapter Lentz illustrates the importance of the oral tradition of powerful memory and effective oral delivery in a given context, from the divine inspiration of the rhapsode to the importance of face-to-face interaction in Platonic dialectic. The contexts include the use of written and oral evidence in the law courts to the presence of both traditions in the philosophical works of Plato.The resulting view of orality and literacy in Greece shows a long interaction between the two media, continuing through the Hellenic period. He shows that both traditions played vital roles in the intellectual flowering of the age: while literacy is a requirement for the basic recipe for Western culture, it is not the only ingredient. Lentz argues that the key to many of the most exciting cultural developments of the Greek world was the relationship between written and oral modes of thought and communication.
