Letter and image;
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 139.28 $Massin, an influential French graphic designer, art director and typographer, notable for innovative experimentation with expressive forms of typographic composition. "Letter and Image", Translation: Caroline Hillier; Vivienne Menkes. 286 pp., Profusely illustrated throughout. From the dust jacket: "Here is an anthology, a catalog in text and illustration of two things: I. How man has used letters with other visual symbols in order to communicate. II. What men have written about letters and how (he) uses them. The book examines the letter within three contexts. The first of these is a long general discussion of the letter itself, and the letter as symbol, the fascinating chronology of the illuminated letter and the zoomorphic letter, many illustrations of initials intertwined with men, foliage, animals. The next section is a comprehensive anthology and discussion of figured verse and calligrams, shaped poetry and prose throughout history. The final section examines the use of letters in fine art. In text and illustration the book examines how the letter form has grown in importance throughout the history of art. The diverse illustrative materials are international in scope. Many of the works have never been published before. Designers, architects, decorators, all those who make professional use of the letter will find this text invaluable." "...this former designer for major French book clubs enlivened the publishing industry by testing the limits of typographic composition. He also reintroduced vintage and passé wood typefaces in totally novel ways, rooted in a Dadaist spirit. Although Massin and his typographic work have been little known over here, in the '70s his books on the history of quirky letter forms and odd compositions, notably "Letter and Image," were virtually required reading for designers." From New York Times Sunday Book Review, Steven Heller, "Holiday Visuals", December 2, 2007, in reference to Laetitia Wolff's, MASSIN, Phaidon, 2007

Wonderland: A Thriller
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 66.66 $Fans of Chelsea Cain and Lisa Gardner will devour this edgy thriller about the gruesome secrets hidden beneath a small-town amusement park. From the author ofCreep, Freak, and The Butcher, Jennifer Hillier’s “fine knack for creating hideous killers” (Booklist) is vividly on display.Welcome to Wonderland. By day, it’s a magical place boasting a certain retro charm. Excited children, hands sticky with cotton candy, run frenetically from the Giant Octopus ride to the Spinning Sombrero, while the tinkling carnival music of the giant Wonder Wheel—the oldest Ferris wheel in the Pacific Northwest—fills the air. But before daybreak, an eerie feeling descends. Maybe it’s the Clown Museum, home to creepy wax replicas of movie stars and a massive collection of antique porcelain dolls. Or maybe it’s the terrifyingly real House of Horrors. Or...maybe it’s the dead, decaying body left in the midway for all the Wonder Workers to see.Vanessa Castro’s first day as deputy police chief of Seaside, Washington, is off to a bang. The unidentifiable homeless man rotting inside the tiny town’s main tourist attraction is strange enough, but now a teenage employee—whose defiant picture at the top of the Wonder Wheel went viral that same morning—is missing. As the clues in those seemingly disparate crimes lead her down a mysterious shared path of missing persons that goes back decades, she suspects the seedy rumors surrounding the amusement park’s dark history might just be true. She moved to Seaside to escape her own scandalous past, but has she brought her family to the center of an insidious killer’s twisted game? Acclaimed author Jennifer Hillier’s bone-chilling thriller is masterful and fast-paced, hurtling toward a shocking, bloody conclusion.

Art Deco of the 20s and 30s (Picturebacks)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.53 $This is the first book in English to explore the origins and scope of the extraordinary style which became dominant in Europe and America in the 1920s and 30s - the style of Odeon architecture of liner and hotel interiors, of suburbia and its mass-produced arts. Bevis Hillier defines Art Deco (which takes its name from the great exhibition of 'Arts Décoratifs' at Paris in 1925), and shows how it grew out of Art Nouveau and became its antithesis. He describes how cubism, the Russian Ballet, ancient Egyptian art, the Bauhaus and the design of Aztec temples all contributed to its development. There are vivid word-pictures of the cocktail-party '20s and the Fascist '30s, supported by contemporary quotations. The way in which the moods of the two decades affected the arts is illustrated both in the text and in the 120 pictures. The book covers silver, jewelry, ceramics, glass, textiles, metalwork, architecture and the other disciplines which Art Deco revolutionized. Finally, the Art Deco revival of the latter 20th century is reviewed, from Bonnie and Clyde to kipper ties. And Art Deco, which had been derided or ignored for a whole generation, is claimed as the basis of modern design, from interior decoration to the skyscraper principle and the idea of 'pop-out capsule' rooms. Its powerful influence on painters like Peter Blake and Roy Lichtenstein is also discussed. This book is neither an apologia nor an indictment; it is an impartial and scholarly analysis by an historian who was young enough to view the period objectively, not having lived through it. Bevis Hillier read modern history at Magdalen College, Oxford, where in 1961 he won the Gladstone Memorial Prize. In 1963 he joined the editorial staff of The Times, London, becoming Sale Room Correspondent. After a brief spell working at the British Museum, he became Antiques Correspondent of The Times. In 1967 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
