Published in 1903 by the Pennsylvania Museum, Tulip Ware of the Pennsylvania-German Potters is an in-depth look into the Pennsylvania German folk art known as slipware or redware. This volume introduces readers to the subject by detailing the international history of slip decoration and providing an overview of the technique and products throughout the world. Curator Edwin Atlee Barber delves into the specifics of the Pennsylvania German folk art by exploring tools and processes of manufacture, techniques and variations, decoration, motives, coloring, types, and practical uses for pottery, illustrated by numerous black-and-white images from the Pennsylvania Museum’s extensive collection. The volume also contains a detailed discussion of famous eighteenth- and nineteenth-century potters, primarily from Montgomery and Bucks Counties, including biographical information and illustrative photographs of their work. Particular attention is paid to the Pennsylvania German dialect and the important role it played in folk art. Barber provides translations of numerous Pennsylvania German inscriptions, a defining element of much of this art. Modern readers can still find many of the pieces featured in this volume on display in the American collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The Louisiana 1st Cavalry Regiment, organized at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, during the late summer of 1861, recruited its members in Baton Rouge and the parishes in East Baton Rouge, Rapides, St. Landry, and Orleans. It skirmished in Tennessee and Kentucky, fought at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga, then was active in the Knoxville Campaign. Later the regiment was on duty in Southwest Mississippi and East Louisiana. When James Mooney lived with and studied the Cherokee between 1887 and 1900, they were the largest and most important Indian tribe in the United States. There is humanity along with inhumanity in the relations between the Cherokee and other groups, Indian and non-Indian; there is fortitude and persistence balanced with disillusionment and frustration. The Cherokee Nation ceased to exist as a political entity seven years after the initial study was done, when Oklahoma became a state.In the introduction to the original publication of this history in 1900, James Mooney commented that "there is change indeed in dress and outward seeming, but the heart of the Indian is still his own." This history was originally included in the 19th Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology.It was republished under the auspices of the National Anthropological Archives of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, at the request of the Governing Body of the Cherokee Nation, in 1975, with new introductory material and supplementary illustrations from the archives. The volume has a foreword from W.W. Keeler, chief of the Cherokee Nation, and an introduction by Richard Mack Bettis, president of the Tulsa Tsa-La-Gi-Ya Cherokee Community.

Charles Darwin's "Historical Sketch" has appeared as a preface to nearly every authorized edition of Darwin's Origin of Species since the second English edition was published in 1860. The "Historical Sketch" provides a brief history of opinion about the species question as a prelude to Darwin's own independent contribution to the subject, but its provenance is somewhat obscure. While some previous thinkers anticipated portions of Darwin's theory long before he did, none of them saw the complete picture as clearly as Darwin. As such, he was able to claim originality and priority for the idea that has transformed our understanding of nature. His "Historical Sketch" was written as an attempt to address these issues. Some things are known about its production, such as when it first appeared and what changes were made to it between its first appearance in 1860 and its final form in 1866. Other questions remain unanswered. How did it evolve in Darwin's mind? Why did he write it at all? What did he think he was accomplishing by prefacing it to Origin of Species?
