Jacques de Coutre was a Flemish gem trader who spent nearly a decade in Southeast Asia at the turn of the 17th century. He left history a substantial autobiography written in Spanish and preserved in the National Library of Spain in Madrid. Written in the form of a picaresque tale, with an acute eye for the cultures he encountered, the memoirs tell the story of his adventures in the trading centres of the day: Melaka, Ayutthaya, Cambodia, Patani, Pahang, Johor, Brunei and Manila. Narrowly escaping death several times, De Coutre was inevitably drawn into dangerous intrigues between the representatives of European power, myriad fortune hunters and schemers, and the rulers and courtiers in the palaces of Pahang, Patani, Siam and Johor.         In addition to his autobiography, De Coutre wrote a series of memorials to the crowns of Spain and Portugal that contain recommendations designed to remedy the decline in the fortunes of the Iberian powers in Southeast Asia, particularly against the backdrop of early Dutch political and commercial penetration into the region.        Annotated and translated into English for the first time, these materials provide a valuable first-hand account of the issues confronting the early colonial powers in Southeast Asia, and deep insights into the societies De Coutre encountered in the territory that today makes up Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines. The book is lavishly illustrated with 62 maps and drawings of the period, including examples not previously published.

For the very first time, the lithographic plates that Jean-Jacques Rifaud (1786-1852) dedicated to Egypt are being published in full. During his long stay in Egypt (nearly 13 years) he aims to publish, on his own, a "Voyage en Égypte, en Nubie et lieux circonvoisins" (Travel in Egypt and Nubia and surrounding places) to complement the well-known "Description de l'Égypte" (Description of Egypt) written by the many scholars and scientists of the French expedition. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to achieve this ambitious project, even if he succeeded to print 222 plates. However, the text that was intended to comment the plates has never been written. As in the "Description de l'Égypte", the plates are related to Egyptian antiquities, natural history (botany and zoology) and ethnography. This extraordinary adventurer has been the first Egyptologist to excavate in Karnak, in the Fayoum, in Tanis and in the Delta. Egyptologists will find here several works of art he brought to light and which are now in Turin, in Paris and in Munich, if they didn't stay in Egypt. Other plates show the Nubian temples (not shown in the "Description de l'Égypte"), as well as monuments that disappeared in the lime kilns during the 19th century. Naturalists will be particularly interested in the zoological plates, especially those dedicated to the fish. The ethnographical plates distinguish themselves from those of the "Description de l'Égypte", especially those dealing with the customs and everyday life in Upper Egypt and in Lower Nubia. Many ancient books libraries conserve some plates from J.-J. Rifaud's work. With its numerous comments written by experts, this work will be a scientific reference for both book lovers and curators.
