Sister Ignatia: Angel of Alcoholics Anonymous (A Campion Book)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 5.55 $Sister Ignatia is the story of an exceptional woman, "the little sister" of Alcoholics Anonymous. Working with stock broker Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, the founders of the A.A. movement, Sr. Ignatia arranged for the hospitalization of alcoholics at a time when alcoholism was seen as a weakness of character, rather than a disease. In St. Thomas Hospital in Akron, she began her crusade to aid those suffering from alcoholism and to help them become functioning and productive citizens once again. She was recognized by President John F. Kennedy for her pioneering contributions and was given the Theta Phi Alpha St. Catherine of Siena Award for outstanding Catholic women of national distinction. This is Sr. Ignatia's biography--the story of a nun who was the spiritual cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Her example gave Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith a living illustration of love and service that today are the hallmarks of A.A.

Topics include: Domestic violence in Caucasian, Latino, African-American, Asian, Native American, and Sub-Saharan African cultures Child abuse and the response of child welfare agencies The connection between domestic violence and homelessness and drug abuse Domestic violence in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons Spousal violence among police officers The history of domestic violence policy Orders of protection Prosecuting and defending those charged with domestic violence Court-ordered treatment and community supervision of domestic violence offenders Creating campaigns for domestic violence prevention The book provides rare glimpses of topics inadequately covered in the literature, allowing readers to understand and appreciate the complexity of domestic violence while also promoting a variety of effective strategies to combat its continued rise. Effective Clinical Practice in Music Therapy: Medical Music Therapy for Adults in Hospital Settings
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 72.33 $The impact of hospitalization on children and their families is becoming more clearly understood in today s changing healthcare environment. Pediatric inpatient services are focused on children with more critical illnesses, shorter hospital stays, and a culture of family-centered care. This publication clearly exemplifies the role of music therapists and the benefits of music therapy in the pediatric setting. Content is based on evidence from the literature, clinical experience, and strong relationships between the therapists, their patients and families, and the staff with whom they work. Each chapter is geared to a specialized pediatric unit. The information, however, can be generalized to other areas of the hospital. Readers will learn about patient needs and diagnoses experienced on the unit. Integrated throughout are helpful tips and practical knowledge to inform a treatment process that may be implemented within only one session. Case studies illustrate the efficacious nature of music therapy in the medical environment and sample forms provide examples of documentation unique to this setting. The student of music therapy, and the professional looking to expand areas of clinical practice, will benefit from the detailed information on service delivery in acute settings. Hospital administrators and medical personnel will gain a clearer understanding of how music therapy functions in the pediatric setting, as well as the benefits of having a music therapist within the pediatric interdisciplinary treatment team. Current medical music therapists will find this resource valuable for program expansion, as supporting documentation of current practice, and as an educational tool for interns and co-workers.

For Patients of Moderate Means: A Social History of the Voluntary Public General Hospital in Canada, 1890-1950 (Volume 13) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.00 $The Great Depression, however, finally exhausted the average patient's ability to pay and engendered a national health-care crisis. A public hospital insurance scheme was first achieved in Saskatchewan in 1947 and nationally in 1957. Universal accessibility without fear of the financial consequences of hospitalization reflected concern for both the medical health of Canadians unable to pay for hospital care, and the economic health of the paying 'patient of moderate means' threatened with medical pauperization. It also provided the resources necessary to address the modern epidemic of lifestyle diseases and to accommodate the demands of the post-war therapeutic revolution. Employing the historical records of selected individual hospitals, reports and data from all levels of government, a wide range of professional medical, nursing, hospital, and public health journals, and the international historiography of hospital history, David and Rosemary Gagan describe and account for the invention, rise, decline, and rebirth of the modern Canadian hospital between 1890 and 1950. They pay particular attention to the evolving interdependence of doctors and hospitals in the struggle to legitimate the social and cultural authority of scientific medicine, the evolution of hospital-based nursing, and the experiences of patients.

In a rather vague and disorganized manner, he acknowledged the presence of persecutory concerns. He reported unusual experiences like having seen the earth and the bottom of the sea. In the emergency room, he reported concerns that he might have killed a buddy of his and that he could take a friend's soul from his body. He also reported his ability to be in contact with God. Initially he denied any alcohol or drug use. Later on, he admitted having had LSD on several occasions. He described his trips as traveling the world and touching things. He also acknowledged the use of heroin, crack cocaine, mushrooms, ecstasy, and speed, but he was not able to provide more details. THIS REPORT IS STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. Redisclosure is prohibited by law. NOTE: This information has been disclosed to you from records whose confidentiality is protected by federal law. Peer Respite Handbook: A Guide to Understanding, Building and Supporting Peer Respites
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.12 $Peer respites provide an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization for people experiencing deep emotional and/or mental distress. They come with many upsides including cost savings, less disruption to someone's life, and the benefit of support and wisdom from others who've been through similar struggles. Peer respites are popping up with increasing frequency across the world. Yet, at the same time their numbers are growing, they continue to be not very well understood. Understanding peer respite is the first key to ensuring that they are developed with integrity, well supported in the community, and accessible to all those who might want to use them. This book provides a comprehensive review of peer respite including: · What is the mission of a peer respite? · Who is it for? · What does a stay at a peer respite look like and how is it different than more conventional services? · What is involved with hiring and developing a peer respite team? · What are some of the likely outcomes and challenges? · And so much more! This book is intended for groups wanting to start up a peer respite (or sustain an existing one), potential funders who are contemplating support of such an effort, and anyone interested in better understanding what peer respite is all about!

Autobiography of a Disease (Writing Lives: Ethnographic Narratives) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.47 $Autobiography of a Disease documents, in experimental form, the experience of extended life-threatening illness in contemporary US hospitals and clinics. The narrative is based primarily on the author's sudden and catastrophic collapse into a coma and long hospitalization thirteen years ago; but it has also been crafted from twelve years of research on the history of microbiology, literary representations of illness and medical treatment, cultural analysis of MRSA in the popular press, and extended auto-ethnographic work on medicalization. An experiment in form, the book blends the genres of storytelling, historiography, ethnography, and memoir. Unlike most medical memoirs, told from the perspective of the human patient, Autobiography of a Disease is told from the perspective of a bacterial cluster. This orientation is intended to represent the distribution of perspectives on illness, disability, and pain across subjective centers -- from patient to monitoring machine, from body to cell, from caregiver to cared-for -- and thus makes sense of illness only in a social context.

The Microscripts
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.00 $W. G. Sebald called Robert Walser “a clairvoyant of the small,” and nowhere is the phrase more apt than in his “microscripts.” Robert Walser wrote many of his manuscripts in a highly enigmatic, shrunken-down form. These narrow strips of paper (many of them written during his hospitalization in the Waldau sanatorium) covered with tiny ant-like markings only a millimeter or two high, came to light only after the author’s death in 1956. At first considered a secret code, the microscripts were eventually discovered to be a radically miniaturized form of a German script: a whole story could fit on the back of a business card. Selected from the six-volume German transcriptions from the original microscripts, these 25 short pieces are gathered in this gorgeously illustrated co-publication with the Christine Burgin Gallery. Each microscript is reproduced in full color in its original form: the detached cover of a trashy crime novel, a disappointing letter, a receipt of payment. Sometimes Walser used the pages of small tear-off calendars (but only after cutting them lengthwise and filling up each half with text). Schnapps, rotten husbands, small town life, the radio, pigs (and how none of us can deny being one), jealousy, Van Gogh and marriage proposals are some of Walser’s subjects. These texts take strength from Walser’s motto: “To be small and to stay small.” 65 full-color illustrations

Nevertheless, the application of this technique requires expertise, training, and experience. This is why this reference, resolutely didactic and practical, was written with the ambition to become a handbook of reference for the proven techniques of vaginal surgery.
