La presente edición en español ofrece, entre las que existen en nuestra lengua, la novedad de ser completa. Las ventajas de poseer una traducción de esta índole son demasiado obvias para que requieran ser enumeradas. Baste recordar el doble carácter de la obra de los Grimm, su intención científica y su realización artística, para comprender las ventajas que para muchos estudiosos o aficionados del folklore o la etnología puede reportar una versión de todo el material sacado a la luz por los dos hermanos. Tal duplicidad de carácter ha sido también tenida en cuenta en la adopción de criterio para la traducción. La versión literal de algunos cuentos ofrece espinosas dificultades, y solo sería factible sacrificando. Poco menos del todo, su eficacia como obra literaria o de entretenimiento. En estos casos (que por lo demás no son muchos) se ha impuesto una serie de adaptación, que respetando en lo posible el contenido, resultará legible en castellano. Entiéndase sin embargo, que tal adaptación solo alcanza a detalles de forma; los cuentos quedan tal como los publicaron sus autores.
