Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 96.45 $In the late 1920s the pioneering firm of Kandem (Krting & Mathiesen AG, Leipzig) led the field in creating innovative lighting. Widespread in both private and public buildings, Kandem lighting fixtures also shaped nocturnal cityscapes throughout Europe. Drawing on intensive research and development, Kandem set the standards for modern lighting. As a school of art and design, the Bauhaus in Dessau was famous far beyond the borders of Germany. From the productive Bauhaus collaboration with Kandem emerged numerous types of lighting fixtures which were functional in design, form and construction. This pioneering achievement broke new ground in product development and design at a time when unlike the present collaboration between designers and industrialists was the exception. Legal Origins and Legal Change.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.72 $Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Roman law has been the most innovative of secular legal systems as well as the most influential on subsequent development. Both Roman and later law appear in this volume. The present collection of essays examines issues in the development of legal institutions, stressing methods of creation such as legislation and juristic writings, the earliest known Roman law and the origins of such central institutions as the contracts of sale and partnership, and the early history of trusts. Law exists at the level of idea and also has practical consequences for society. Some essays show how the law of the past has a concealed or misunderstood impact on subsequent legal approaches. Others focus more directly on law in society, to deal with issues such as the significance of the ease with which legal rules and institutions can be borrowed from a very different society, and the deformation of legal notions to come to grips with problems. - Verlagsneues Exemplar. August Macke
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.13 $August Macke (1887 - 1914) was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art: he saw the development of the main German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the successive avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him. In Paris, where he traveled for the first time in 1907, Macke saw the work of the Impressionists, and shortly after he went to Berlin and spent a few months in Lovis Corinth's studio. His style was formed within the mode of French Impressionism and Post-impressionism and later went through a Fauve period. In 1909 he married Elisabeth Gerhardt. In 1910, through his friendship with Franz Marc, Macke met Kandinsky and for a while shared the non-objective aesthetic and the mystical and symbolic interests of Der Blaue Reiter. Macke's meeting with Robert Delaunay in Paris in 1912 was to be a sort of revelation for him. Delaunay's chromatic Cubism, which Apollinaire had called Orphism, influenced Macke's art from that point onwards. His Shops Windows can be considered a personal interpretation of Delaunay's Windows, combined with the simultaneity of images found in Italian Futurism. The exotic atmosphere of Tunisia, where Macke traveled in April 1914 with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet was fundamental for the creation of the luminist approach of his final period, during which he produced a series of works now considered masterpieces. August Macke's oeuvre can be considered as Expressionism (in its original German flourishing between 1905 and 1925), and also as part of Fauvism. The paintings concentrate primarily on expressing feelings and moods rather than reproducing objective reality, usually distorting color and form.

Lessing and the German Enlightenment
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 83.91 $Primarily celebrated for his dramatic works Minna von Barnhelm, Emilia Galotti and Nathan der Weise, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's diverse pursuits extended far beyond the stage. From incisive journalism to innovative reflections on poetry, aesthetics and theology, his wide-ranging intellectual interests place him firmly alongside contemporary polymaths such as Diderot. In this extensive study an international team of experts explores Lessing's contribution to both the German and broader European Enlightenments to reveal: the energy and acuity of his critical writing, which made him an exemplar for subsequent German authors; the originality and lasting significance of Laocoon, his groundbreaking treatise on aesthetics, which distinguished the domains of poetry and the visual arts, and is still a major point of reference; how his reflections on theology and the Bible helped shape a view of Christianity as a historical phenomenon without absolute truth; how his Enlightenment curiosity and open-mindedness were nourished by an interest in natural science, particularly astronomy; how activities such as his adaptation of English domestic tragedy and his translations of Diderot's theatrical writings placed him at the heart of the pan- European Enlightenment.
