Becoming a Helper (Fourth Edition--Custom Edition for Stratford Career Institute)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 69.23 $This book was the text my instructor assigned in an interpersonal communication class I took a few years ago. It is very readable, as are all books by the Coreys. It covers a wide range of topics and it uses case examples to illustrate the points. It isn't a counselling book in terms of having alot of exercises on questioning or empathy. It does discuss counselling skills, but it is more concerned with the worker's personal development, in terms of ethics, self-awareness, self-care, etc. The suggested activities at the end of the chapter really help the learning process. My only criticism of the book is that a few of the chapters are a tad long.

The Eightfold Way: The Beauty Of Klein*s Quartic Curve (mathematical Sciences Research Institute Publications)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 46.64 $The German mathematician Felix Klein discovered in 1879 that the surface that we now call the Klein quartic has many remarkable properties, including an incredible 336-fold symmetry, the maximum possible degree of symmetry for any surface of its type. Since then, mathematicians have discovered that the same object comes up in different guises in many areas of mathematics, from complex analysis and geometry to number theory. This volume explores the rich tangle of properties and theories surrounding this multiform object. It includes expository and research articles by renowned mathematicians in different fields. It also includes a beautifully illustrated essay by the mathematical sculptor Helaman Ferguson, who distilled some of the beauty and remarkable properties of this surface into a sculpture entitled "The Eightfold Way." The book closes with the first English translation of Klein's seminal article on this surface.

The Kinsey Data: Marginal Tabulations of the 1938-1963 Interviews Conducted by the Institute for Sex Research
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.00 $This volume, originally published in 1979, is the culmination of the Kinsey Institute’s desire to compile and publish the data from the original Institute case histories taken from 1938 to 1963. The complete sample has been "cleaned" by separating out those from ‘sexually biased" groups (e.g., the delinquent sample) leaving a basic sample of 5,637 males and 5,609 females. The marginal tabulations are presented along with descriptions of the interviewing and sampling process. As the editors explain, their rationale for publication was to present the sorts of data the Institute had available so that other scientists could request it for use in their research, hopefully leading to further analyses and new approaches and ideas.

Real Birds in Imagined Gardens: Mughal Painting between Persia and Europe (Getty Research Institute Council Lecture Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 795.29 $Accounts of paintings produced during the Mughal dynasty (1526–1857) tend to trace a linear, “evolutionary” path and assert that, as European Renaissance prints reached and influenced Mughal artists, these artists abandoned a Persianate style in favor of a European one. Kavita Singh counters these accounts by demonstrating that Mughal painting did not follow a single arc of stylistic evolution. Instead, during the reigns of the emperors Akbar and Jahangir, Mughal painting underwent repeated cycles of adoption, rejection, and revival of both Persian and European styles. Singh’s subtle and original analysis suggests that the adoption and rejection of these styles was motivated as much by aesthetic interest as by court politics. She contends that Mughal painters were purposely selective in their use of European elements. Stylistic influences from Europe informed some aspects of the paintings, including the depiction of clothing and faces, but the symbolism, allusive practices, and overall composition remained inspired by Persian poetic and painterly conventions. Closely examining magnificent paintings from the period, Singh unravels this entangled history of politics and style and proposes new ways to understand the significance of naturalism and stylization in Mughal art.

The Book and the Roses: Sufi Women, Visibility and Zikr in Contemporary Istanbul (Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul: Transactions)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 79.99 $Sufism is Islam's principal mystical tradition, providing its followers with the inner, esoteric or purely spiritual dimension of their faith. This path to spirituality has developed over centuries throughout the Islamic world, fundamentally influencing the religion and its followers, and has been a domain perceived as largely occupied by men. The Book and the Roses, however, reveals the place of women within Sufism--within its spiritual tradition and within its practice--looking particularly at the zikr prayer (the repetitive act of chanting ""the most beautiful names of god""). Concentrating on Sufi women living in Istanbul, the book effectively examines Islam as a lived practice. The result is a valuable contribution to our knowledge of the development of the modern Turkish Muslim movement, and to Islamic studies and women's studies in general.

Ethnicity, Nationalism and Conflict in and after the Soviet Union: The Mind Aflame (International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO))
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 74.29 $Valery Tishkov is a well-known Russian historian and anthropologist, and former Minister of Nationalities in Yeltsin′s government. This book draws on his inside knowledge of major events and extensive primary research. Tishkov argues that ethnicity has a multifaceted role: it is the most accessible basis for political mobilization; a means of controlling power and resources in a transforming society; and therapy for the great trauma suffered by individuals and groups under previous regimes. This complexity helps explain the contradictory nature and outcomes of public ethnic policies based on a doctrine of ethno-nationalism.

The Moravian Mission Diaries of David Zeisberger: 1772?1781 (Max Kade Research Institute)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.00 $David Zeisberger (1721–1808) was the head of a group of Moravian missionaries that settled in the Upper Ohio Valley in 1772 to minister to the Delaware Nation. For the next ten years, Zeisberger lived among the Delaware, becoming a trusted adviser and involving himself not only in religious activities but also in political and social affairs. During this time he kept diaries in which he recorded the full range of his activities. Published in English for the first time, The Moravian Mission Diaries of David Zeisberger offers an unparalleled insider’s view of Indian society during times of both war and peace. Zeisberger’s diaries, today housed at the Moravian Archives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, present a detailed picture of the effect of the American Revolution on one Indian nation—not only on political issues but also in terms of its economy, culture, and demographic structure. A later portion of the diaries, covering the post–Revolutionary War years, was translated and published in the nineteenth century, but the 1772–81 diaries have never been published in English translation. This translation is based on the full scholarly edition of the diaries, which Wellenreuther and Wessel published in Germany in 1995. Publication of this volume will forever change the way we see the impact of the American Revolution on Indian life and on the Ohio country.
