Instructing Beginners in Faith (The Augustine Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.97 $Although not usually considered to be on the same level as The Confessions or The City of God, to name just two of Augustine's greatest works, the short treatise entitled Instructing Beginners in Faith has in fact had a powerful influence on the Christian Church. It began as a reflection on the most suitable way of communicating the heart of Christian faith to those applying for membership of the Church. In the course of the past sixteen hundred years, however, it has been frequently and creatively adapted to serve the needs of education in faith in many different contexts, including the education of clergy and religious education more generally. The two model catecheses that Augustine sketches, one quite long and the other considerably shorter, not only continue to have relevance today but also provide an important insight into his understanding of the use of scripture and tradition. And Augustine's awareness of the problems that educators face demonstrates his profound grasp of the human condition.

The Flight Instructor's Survival Guide: True, Witty, Insightful Stories Illustrating the Fundamentals of Instructing
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.62 $After passing the FAA’s Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI) knowledge test required of all instructors, the true challenge begins―applying that knowledge in the real world of teaching flight. Follow along as Arlynn McMahon lifts the FOI principles from the classroom and brings them into the cockpit. Her forty-four stories demonstrate the FOI principles in flight and offer practical strategies for dealing with both common and unexpected situations―all with wisdom, grace, and humor. McMahon’s companion to the Aviation Instructor’s Handbook (FAA-H-8083-9) uses memorable parables and provides sage advice to illustrate FOI principles at work with real clients in real-life situations. Psychology, human factors, professionalism, effective communication, customer service, and ethics are evident in her teaching style with the people she’s interacted with over decades in the business of flight training. McMahon’s experiences illustrate what works―and why―for instructors and their students. Through artful storytelling, McMahon shows how a successful instructor is sometimes a psychologist, other times a detective, and always a gatekeeper enforcing rules and cultivating the behaviors required to be a responsible aviation citizen. Delightful, full of wisdom―and written with humor, kindness, and dignity for her students―this is an invaluable guide for all flight and ground instructors who will benefit from using McMahon’s insights with their own clients.

From White to Black: The Story of a Black Family that Started off White
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.23 $Where did I come from? Who were my grandparents and my great-grandparents? Where did they come from? My inner city friends in Los Angeles had been instructing me for years to “get back to my roots.” I was finally going to take their advice. In “From White to Black,” author, Tracy Lewis tells the story of her family, who had been White for over 100 years until they, along with thousands of other mixed-race and white families were reclassified as Negro. In 1924, Walter Plecker directed offices under his authority to change vital statistic records and reclassify thousands of mulattoes (persons with mixed-race ancestry) as Negro without their consent and without notifying them. Plecker was convinced that mulatto offspring were slowly contaminating the White race and referred to mulattos as rats that needed to be stopped. Soon after, in 1930, the U.S. Census Bureau dropped the longstanding racial classification of mulatto from the list of racial classifications. Plecker’s work on racial purity was praised by Adolf Hitler, who congratulated Plecker for being the first person to “get it right”. The belief that “one drop of Black blood made one Black and only Black” was a lie created by Aryan White Supremacists...And sadly, their teaching still resonates in the minds of people, most of whom have never even heard of the one-drop rule. In “From White to Black” Lewis examines the reasoning behind the one-drop rule and the idea of racial-purity as she shines a revealing light on racial classification, skin color prejudice, and racism in the 21st century. I was getting ready to go out the door to work when the phone rang. I didn’t want to answer it, but something told me to pick up the phone. When I did, the voice on the other end said, ‘Hello, Louise, this is Alex Haley.’ I was shocked! —Louise “Bunch” King
