Probabilistic Models of the Brain: Perception and Neural Function (Neural Information Processing)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.00 $Neurophysiological, neuroanatomical, and brain imaging studies have helped to shed light on how the brain transforms raw sensory information into a form that is useful for goal-directed behavior. A fundamental question that is seldom addressed by these studies, however, is why the brain uses the types of representations it does and what evolutionary advantage, if any, these representations confer. It is difficult to address such questions directly via animal experiments. A promising alternative is to use probabilistic principles such as maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference to derive models of brain function. This book surveys some of the current probabilistic approaches to modeling and understanding brain function. Although most of the examples focus on vision, many of the models and techniques are applicable to other modalities as well. The book presents top-down computational models as well as bottom-up neurally motivated models of brain function. The topics covered include Bayesian and information-theoretic models of perception, probabilistic theories of neural coding and spike timing, computational models of lateral and cortico-cortical feedback connections, and the development of receptive field properties from natural signals.

Information Theory and Network Coding (Information Technology: Transmission, Processing and Storage)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 102.46 $This book is an evolution from my book A First Course in Information Theory published in 2002 when network coding was still at its infancy. The last few years have witnessed the rapid development of network coding into a research ?eld of its own in information science. With its root in infor- tion theory, network coding has not only brought about a paradigm shift in network communications at large, but also had signi?cant in?uence on such speci?c research ?elds as coding theory, networking, switching, wireless c- munications, distributeddatastorage, cryptography, andoptimizationtheory. While new applications of network coding keep emerging, the fundamental - sults that lay the foundation of the subject are more or less mature. One of the main goals of this book therefore is to present these results in a unifying and coherent manner. While the previous book focused only on information theory for discrete random variables, the current book contains two new chapters on information theory for continuous random variables, namely the chapter on di?erential entropy and the chapter on continuous-valued channels. With these topics included, the book becomes more comprehensive and is more suitable to be used as a textbook for a course in an electrical engineering department.

Visual Information Processing (Perspectives on Fundamental Processes in Intellectual Functioning)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 112.31 $Visual information processing in humans with intellectual disabilities and in animals is presented, for conceptual and methodological reasons. Much of the evolutionary path of higher primate species has involved the development of sophisticated visual systems that interact with complex, higher-order cognitive processes. Key questions in cognitive science address the manner in which the environment is represented by the organism, and thus relate to how knowledge about the world is gleaned, with implications for theories of action and decision making. Finally, it has become apparent that the distinction between perceptual and cognitive processes is not always a clear one, and that these processes interact in critical ways in underlying complex behavioral repertoires.Consistent with the emphasis in this series on individual differences, both typical and atypical development are explored here. Philosophical approaches to visualism are also presented. Chapters have import both for basic science and for the development of applications.

Vision: A Computational Investigation into the Human Representation and Processing of Visual Information (Mit Press)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.53 $Available again, an influential book that offers a framework for understanding visual perception and considers fundamental questions about the brain and its functions.David Marr's posthumously published Vision (1982) influenced a generation of brain and cognitive scientists, inspiring many to enter the field. In Vision, Marr describes a general framework for understanding visual perception and touches on broader questions about how the brain and its functions can be studied and understood. Researchers from a range of brain and cognitive sciences have long valued Marr's creativity, intellectual power, and ability to integrate insights and data from neuroscience, psychology, and computation. This MIT Press edition makes Marr's influential work available to a new generation of students and scientists. In Marr's framework, the process of vision constructs a set of representations, starting from a description of the input image and culminating with a description of three-dimensional objects in the surrounding environment. A central theme, and one that has had far-reaching influence in both neuroscience and cognitive science, is the notion of different levels of analysis―in Marr's framework, the computational level, the algorithmic level, and the hardware implementation level. Now, thirty years later, the main problems that occupied Marr remain fundamental open problems in the study of perception. Vision provides inspiration for the continuing efforts to integrate knowledge from cognition and computation to understand vision and the brain.

Magnetic Materials, Structures and Processing for Information Storage.; Materials Research Society Symposium Proceedings Volume 614.)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.00 $The exponential growth in information technologies has resulted in an explosion in the need for data storage with increased speed and reliability. These requirements have caused rapid development of complex magnetic materials and structures. The rate of technology development has led to a situation where the performance envelope of new materials is not fully known until the materials are fabricated into devices. In response to this, the focus of this book, first published in 2001, is not only on magnetic materials, but also on techniques and technology associated with device fabrication. The work presented in this book effectively spans the range of the myriad of information storage research from concept to product. Topics include: patterned magnetic recording media; characterization of magnetic thin films and structures; magnetic tunnel junctions and spin-dependent transport; GMR and spin valves; media/GMR/CMR; writer materials and characteristics; and magnetic structure processing techniques.

Information Processing: Boolean Algebra, Classical Logic, Cellular Automata, and Probability Manipulation
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.26 $Volume I was corrected and revised in September 2017. This book begins the task of defining, explaining, arguing for, and, in the end, providing a rationale for information processing. Volume I is concerned with the notion that an information processor is mainly engaged in making inferences. An information processor would prefer to reach definite conclusions by using some form of deduction. Unfortunately, it is often thwarted in this desire by a fundamental lack of relevant information. Probability theory has developed as a rigorous way of dealing with the uncertainty surrounding inference. Thus, we begin by treating some of the formal manipulation rules that crop up in probability theory. To provide some foundational basis for the applications to appear in later Volumes, the topics of Boolean Algebra, Classical Logic, and Cellular Automata will make an appearance here.

Statistical Image Processing and Multidimensional Modeling (Information Science and Statistics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 168.56 $Images are all around us! The proliferation of low-cost, high-quality imaging devices has led to an explosion in acquired images. When these images are acquired from a microscope, telescope, satellite, or medical imaging device, there is a statistical image processing task: the inference of something—an artery, a road, a DNA marker, an oil spill—from imagery, possibly noisy, blurry, or incomplete. A great many textbooks have been written on image processing. However this book does not so much focus on images, per se, but rather on spatial data sets, with one or more measurements taken over a two or higher dimensional space, and to which standard image-processing algorithms may not apply. There are many important data analysis methods developed in this text for such statistical image problems. Examples abound throughout remote sensing (satellite data mapping, data assimilation, climate-change studies, land use), medical imaging (organ segmentation, anomaly detection), computer vision (image classification, segmentation), and other 2D/3D problems (biological imaging, porous media). The goal, then, of this text is to address methods for solving multidimensional statistical problems. The text strikes a balance between mathematics and theory on the one hand, versus applications and algorithms on the other, by deliberately developing the basic theory (Part I), the mathematical modeling (Part II), and the algorithmic and numerical methods (Part III) of solving a given problem. The particular emphases of the book include inverse problems, multidimensional modeling, random fields, and hierarchical methods.
