Dr. J. H. Kellogg, who, along with his brother, invented the corn flake, here offers a "popular account of the travels of a breakfast through the food tube and of the ten gates and several stations through which it passes, also the obstacles which it sometimes meets." At the time he wrote this book, Dr. J. H. Kellogg was the medical director of the Battle Creek Sanitarium. Kellogg was a committed Adventist who was very interested in proper diet and health, which led to his medical vocation, but also to a keen interest to find natural remedies for disease. Among other things, he promoted vegetarianism, which led to the development of the corn flake and other breakfast cereals. He was the author of more than fifty books.

In 1456 and again in 1458, William Wey (1405/6–76) set out on journeys across a Europe in turmoil from local conflicts and cross-border expansions. Wey, a Devon priest and bursar of Eton College, had been granted special dispensation by Henry VI to undertake pilgrimages, and he was prompted by his friends to write an account of his itinerant adventures. He collected his stories from his travels to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain and later Jerusalem in the fifteen chapters that comprise The Itineraries. The Itineraries contains practical travel advice for the period on conduct and currency, alongside comparative English, Latin, Greek and Hebrew vocabularies, in addition to a remarkable scrapbook compendium of places, roads, and distances. Originally written in English and Latin, Wey’s fascinating observations of a changing Europe are for for first time available in a modern English edition. The pilgrimage was an idea essential to medieval and early modern Christianity, and Wey’s work adds a new dimension to our understanding of its importance and practice. Wey is at once adventurous and highly observant, and The Itineraries will be of interest to scholars of early modern history and armchair pilgrims alike.

Benjamin of Tudela, Spain, a famous world traveler of the 12th century [1173 C.E.] is considered by some modern historians as giving the most accurate description of every-day life in the Middle Ages. Written originally in Hebrew, it was translated into Latin and later became an extremely popular piece of Jewish literature in many languages. The modern reader might regard it as an exotic tale. But the author actually intended to give his contemporaries a factual account of his travels. What exactly did Benjamin plan to accomplish when he started out on his fantastic journey? At first, probably nothing but a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. which. despite the Crusades, retained a magic attraction for the pious Jew. A pilgrimage-an Aliyah-probably with the thought to stay there for the rest of his life. But the fact is that he did take the long road, stopping frequently, meeting people, visiting places, describing occupations and giving a demographic count of Jews in every town and country.

D.)The route through Asia Minor, on which Professor Ramsay has kindly contributed a valuable memoir (app. Coincides generally 'with the military road, which was commonly used by the Byzantine armies in marching from Constantinople to Syria.' It passed through Ismid, Angora, Kiz Hissar, and the famed Cilician Gates to Tarsus, where 'the Apostle Paul was born and was thence continued through Adana, Alexandretta, and over the Beilan Pass to Antioch. From Antioch the 'itinerary crosses the mountains to Latakieh, and thence follows the regular coast road through Tartus, Tripoli, Beirut, Tyre, and Acre, to Cazsarea Palazstina. (comp. Ant. Pp.
