Cette indépendance est née de la résistance à Saint-Domingue de la masse des esclaves accompagnés de quelques libres sous la direction du principal dirigeant de cette épopée anti-esclavagiste et anti-colonialiste : Jean-Jacques Dessalines. Guerrillero hors pair, ayant lutté contre les colonisateurs espagnols, anglais et français, il a toujours été la cible d'une haine viscérale de ses détracteurs qui n'ont cessé de le diaboliser.
