Below the Fairy City: A Life of Jerome K. Jerome
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.00 $Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927) was the author of Three Men in a Boat, one of the best-loved books in the English language, but much of his prolific career has been left unexplored. Over a period of forty years, Jerome was variously a humourist, novelist, journalist, essayist and dramatist, leaving behind him a prodigious quantity of work, belying his famous quote "I like work. It fascinates me. I could sit and look at it for hours." In this major new biography, Carolyn Oulton unearths hitherto unknown details of Jerome's early life in Walsall with his Micawberish father and God-fearing mother, and follows his momentous move to the Fairy City of London, where a formative encounter with Charles Dickens influenced his choice of profession. Although famous for his unerring ability to capture middle-class experience in comic form, Oulton also reveals Jerome's serious side as campaigner on animal rights, champion of the underdog, and fierce opponent of the New Woman. Jerome was desperate to shake off the persistent association with larking about on the Thames, but never quite achieved it in his own lifetime. Jerome K. Jerome is revealed in Oulton's book as a complex figure worthy of reassessment, with his contradictions, idiosyncrasies and, above all, his exquisite wit. This edition also includes a Foreword by Jeremy Nicholas, President of the Jerome K. Jerome Society.

Three Men in a Boat
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.08 $Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by English writer Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers – the jokes seem fresh and witty even today. The three men are based on Jerome himself and two real-life friends, George Wingrave (who would become a senior manager at Barclays Bank) and Carl Hentschel (the founder of a London printing business, called Harris in the book), with whom J. often took boating trips. The dog, Montmorency, is entirely fictional but, "as Jerome admits, developed out of that area of inner consciousness which, in all Englishmen, contains an element of the dog." The trip is a typical boating holiday of the time in a Thames camping skiff. This was just after commercial boat traffic on the Upper Thames had died out, replaced by the 1880s craze for boating as a leisure activity.

Three Men in a Boat
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.33 $Three Men in a Boat is a classic tale of lighthearted comedy and misadventure by Jerome K. Jerome. Also known by its full title: Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), this book follows the escapades of three fellows named George, Harris and Jerome. The latter, being the author himself, is referred to only as 'J' throughout the story. The trio contrive to journey along the Thames in what they intend to be a easygoing boating holiday. The three friends all claim to share various illnesses and to suffer from overwork. Upon agreeing to make their way up the River Thames they bring along J's dog, Montmorency, for the ride too. Jerome mainly sticks to the story of the river journey, but also includes much humorous digression, usually taking the form of memories of past amusing events, into the tale. Highlights include the trio's miserable attempt at making Irish Stew from leftovers at the campfire, and a trout made from Plaster of Paris. The book, first published in 1889, was a big success among late Victorian audiences, but attracted scathing reviews from critics who found its informality and use of slang to be very vulgar. However among the everyday reader the book was an enormous success, with sales strong for decades after its publication. Unusually for books of the era, the humour has dated well - the believable friendship and banter between the blokes aboard ship continues to resonate with the modern audience, while several of the comic set pieces carry an eternal lighthearted humour.

Writers, Lovers, Soldiers, Spies
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.38 $Where did Oscar Wilde indignantly denounce the censorship of his play Salome Where did Arthur Conan Doyle and Jerome K Jerome read from their unpublished manuscripts Where did Graham Greene prop up the bar with Kim Philby and Malcolm Muggeridge Founded by Sir Walter Besant in 1891 to provide a congenial central London venue where authors could relax and socialise, the Authors Club was a home from home to many of the leading figures of English letters in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Its Presidents have included George Meredith, Thomas Hardy, J M Barrie and Compton Mackenzie, while Emile Zola, Mark Twain, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Veronica Wedgwood and T S Eliot were among the guest speakers to address the Club s dinners. Rarely has such an array of writers gathered under one roof, yet the history of the Authors Club has never been written. Now, to commemorate its 125th anniversary and celebrate its return to the National Liberal Club in Whitehall Court, its former chairman has delved into its archives. Along with memoirs, diaries and newspaper reports, these unpublished records have provided the basis for a lively, entertaining and candid account of the Club s distinguished and often turbulent history. This richly absorbing narrative sheds new light on the lives and opinions of many celebrated authors through scandals, financial crises and two world wars. It tells how Arnold Bennett worked on his novels in the Club library while Conan Doyle won the billiard handicap four times, how Lloyd George assembled his kitchen cabinet here during the First World War and the MI5 spymaster Maxwell Knight recruited secret agents during the Second. Passionate disagreements among members over great events such as the General Strike and the Spanish Civil War have reflected changing social attitudes and views on literature and art.
