Sure enough, on one foggy afternoon of itchy thumbs, the hapless Ben is implicated in criminal activity by the police – the kind of mistake it isn’t easy to explain. Doing a runner, Ben hides in the basement of a deserted house, where he discovers the body of a well-dressed man, shot through the head . . . and much more trouble than he bargained for.The subsequent hair-raising events are charged with all the mounting excitement that made J. Jefferson Farjeon a peerless storyteller and Ben one of the most popular but unorthodox amateur detectives of his day.

Polar Pilot: The Carl Ben Eilson Story
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.76 $This is a story of the one of America's unsung heroes in the field of aviation-Carl Ben Eielson. Eielson grew up in an upper-middle-class family in Hatton, North Dakota, and was endowed with sufficient talent to make a comfortable living in any career he desired. Since early in life he dreamed of nothing but flying. After being trained as a military pilot in World War I, he spent two years as a barnstormer in the upper Midwest. In the fall of 1922 he went to Alaska to teach school and at once saw the need for aerial transportation in that massive, uncharted land of isolated settlements. In 1923 he flew the first airmail flight in interior Alaska, which made him an instant hero to all Alaskans, who were accustomed to waiting for months between mail deliveries. In 1924 he flew the first airmail flight under government contract between Fairbanks, Nenana, and McGrath. His fame as a pioneer bush pilot enabled him to win the pilot's position with Sir Hubert Wilkins, and the two thrilled the world with their flight from Barrow to Spitzbergen and later with their flights in the Atlantic. In 1929, at age 32, Eielson met death while on a flight over the frozen wastes of Siberia. A 100-day, three-nation search kept his name before the public in 1929-30, but exploits and contributions have all been forgotten.

Selling Ben Cheever: Back to Square One in a Service Economy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 77.57 $Ben Cheever's hilarious and profound odyssey through the want-ad world. In 1995, America was in the throes of downsizing-fever. Many thousands then, as now, were losing their jobs to the corporate demand of more money for the top, by tightening the belt below. Unable to sell his latest novel, Ben Cheever started to think about what employment opportunities were out there. Mustering his courage, he skimmed the want-ads, made some phone calls, went to interviews, and ended up as everything from a security guard to a computer salesman.Rejected by Brooks Brothers, accepted as a sandwich maker, successful as a car salesman, Cheever brilliantly chronicles life on the other side of the counter. As we see him confront his own demons about what a particular job means to him, we are compelled to consider how our egos are affected by not only what we do, but how we do it. It is through Ben's experiences that we begin to think about our approach to our own jobs and to confront our fears about what we would do if we didn't have them.

Bringing the Thunder: The Missions of a World War II B-29 Pilot in the Pacific
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.95 $By March 1945, when Ben Robertson took to the skies above Japan in his B-29 Superfortress, the end of World War II in the Pacific seemed imminent. But although American forces were closing in on its home islands, Japan refused to surrender, and American B-29s were tasked with hammering Japan to its knees with devastating bomb runs. That meant flying low-altitude, night-time incendiary raids under threat of flak, enemy fighters, mechanical malfunction, and fatigue. It may have been the beginning of the end, but just how soon the end would come - and whether Robertson and his crew would make it home - was far from certain.

Mig Pilot: The Final Escape of Lt. Belenko
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 113.59 $I was so blown away by this book I had to meet Viktor in person and now count him as a personal friend. The book is factual in every respect and is difficult to put down once started. John Barron is an excellent author and did a first class job of writing Viktor's story. In addition to an exciting escape story it reveals why the Soviet Union had to collapse of its own ineptitude, deceit, and corruption. It details humorous incidents such as army pilots' mess-hall riots due to bad food. Mig Pilot is also a biography of an exceptional man whose intelligence saw through a lifetime of brainwashing. The story is humorous in places and engrossing from beginning to end. It starts right out with Viktor's desperate and harrowing escape flight to freedom in his top-secret Mig-25 Foxbat, then in subsequent chapters details the life events that led to his courageous decision to "go for broke" and make his live-or-die dash to freedom. It illustrates how America probably could have given the Soviets all of its top secrets and they would have found a way to screw up making use of them.Viktor is not only a first class pilot, he is also a true hero. Don't lend this book to anyone and expect to get it back.

To the Limit: An Air Cav Huey Pilot in Vietnam
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.81 $Helicopter pilots in Vietnam kidded one another about being nothing but glorified bus drivers. But these “rotor heads” saved thousands of American lives while performing what the Army classified as the most dangerous job it had to offer. One in eighteen did not return home. Tom A. Johnson flew the UH-1 “Iroquois” — better known as the “Huey” — in the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion of the First Air Cavalry Division. From June 1967 through June 1968, he accumulated an astonishing 1,600 flying hours (1,150 combat and 450 noncombat). His battalion was one of the most highly decorated units in the Vietnam War and, as part of the famous First Air Cavalry Division, helped redefine modern warfare. With tremendous flying skill, Johnson survived rescue missions and key battles that included those for Hue and Khe Sanh and operations in the A Shau and Song Re valleys, while many of his comrades did not. His heartfelt and riveting memoir will strike a chord with any soldier who ever flew in the ubiquitous Huey and any reader with an interest in how the Vietnam War was really fought.

China Pilot: Flying for Chiang and Chennault
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.07 $At the end of World War II, young American pilot Felix Smith had to chose between returning home to a steady airline job in Wisconsin and remaining in Asia. However, life in the Midwest could not compete with the excitement and seductive mystique of flying in the Orient. He stayed overseas for almost three decades.Smith became one of the first pilots of Civil Air Transport, or CAT, the China-based airline co-founded by Claire Chennault, the famed leader of the Flying Tigers. Ferrying troops and equipment for the Nationalists during China's civil war, CAT was also a lifeline that provided medicine and supplies to China's suffering masses during these difficult years. Later CAT flew under CIA contract during the French war in Indochina, the Korean War, American's secret war in Laos, and the Vietnam War. A true aviation pioneer, Felix Smith was in the cockpit from the beginning and saw it all. With an appreciation of the eccentric and an eye for the exotic, Smith brings to life the colorful, courageous people who kept CAT aloft despite its reputation as "the world's most shot-at airline." Foremost was the indomitable Chennault, whom Smith knew well. Then there were the rugged pilots, such as the legendary James "Earthquake Magoon" McGovern, killed flying supplies to the besieged French forces at Dien Bien Phu, and many others who risked their lives for freedom.
