The Kerner Report (The James Madison Library in American Politics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.88 $The Kerner Report is a powerful window into the roots of racism and inequality in the United States. Hailed by Martin Luther King Jr. as a "physician's warning of approaching death, with a prescription for life," this historic study was produced by a presidential commission established by Lyndon Johnson, chaired by former Illinois governor Otto Kerner, and provides a riveting account of the riots that shook 1960s America. The commission pointed to the polarization of American society, white racism, economic inopportunity, and other factors, arguing that only "a compassionate, massive, and sustained" effort could reverse the troubling reality of a racially divided, separate, and unequal society. Conservatives criticized the report as a justification of lawless violence while leftist radicals complained that Kerner didn’t go far enough. But for most Americans, this report was an eye-opening account of what was wrong in race relations.Drawing together decades of scholarship showing the widespread and ingrained nature of racism, The Kerner Report provided an important set of arguments about what the nation needs to do to achieve racial justice, one that is familiar in today’s climate. Presented here with an introduction by historian Julian Zelizer, The Kerner Report deserves renewed attention in America’s continuing struggle to achieve true parity in race relations, income, employment, education, and other critical areas.

Kerner: The Conflict of Intangible Rights
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.05 $This first biography of Otto Kerner traces the heritage of a major figure in Illinois politics and explains his precipitous descent from public hero to public enemy. As a Cook County judge, Kerner reformed Illinois adoption procedure; as a two-term Democratic governor he promoted economic development, education, mental health services, and equal access to jobs and housing; as a federal appeals court judge he bucked the law-and-order tide and defended the rights of the accused. Kerner achieved national fame as chair of the National Commission of Civil Disorders (the Kerner Commission), which remains a milestone in America's struggle for racial harmony. An eloquent prophet of the grave consequences of racism in America's cities, Kerner articulated the commission's principal finding that 'our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white - separate and unequal'. Kerner's achievements, however, were eclipsed by his conviction on federal charges of mail fraud, bribery, perjury, and income tax evasion tied to his dealings in stock of an Illinois racetrack operator.Arguing that Kerner's incarceration related less to his misdeeds than to the zeal of federal investigators in attacking corruption in Illinois, Bill Barnhart and Gene Schlickman reveal how the prosecution of the popular ex-governor deepened the penetration of the federal government into state and local politics and coarsened public attitudes toward public service. This broad-based study sets Kerner's life against a background of pivotal events and issues in American politics over six decades. An absorbing biography of a prominent and arguably tragic public figure, "Kerner" presents a cautionary tale on the strengths and weaknesses of the American political character and the capriciousness of political acclaim and denigration.

Separate and Unequal: The Kerner Commission and the Unraveling of American Liberalism by Gillon, Steven M. [Hardcover ]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.83 $From a New York Times bestselling author, the definitive history of the Kerner Commission, whose report on urban unrest reshaped American debates about race and inequalityIn Separate and Unequal, New York Times bestselling historian Steven M. Gillon offers a revelatory new history of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders -- popularly known as the Kerner Commission. Convened by President Lyndon Johnson after riots in Newark and Detroit left dozens dead and thousands injured, the commission issued a report in 1968 that attributed the unrest to "white racism" and called for aggressive new programs to end discrimination and poverty. "Our nation is moving toward two societies," it warned, "one black, and one white -- separate and unequal."Johnson refused to accept the Kerner Report, and as his political coalition unraveled, its proposals went nowhere. For the right, the report became a symbol of liberal excess, and for the left, one of opportunities lost. Separate and Unequal is essential for anyone seeking to understand the fraught politics of race in America.

Travel Shadows By Justinus Kerner
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 42.69 $Justinus Kerner (1786-1862) was one of the most celebrated figures in nineteenth-century German culture. A physician by training, he was also a leading member of the Swabian Romantic circle of poets which included, among others, Ludwig Uhland and Gustav Schwab. Kerner's international fame rests primarily on his contributions to the investigation of paranormal phenomena. The most important of these was his exhaustive case study, Die Seherin von Prevorst (The Seeress of Prevorst, 1829). The book was translated into English in 1849 by the English writer, Catherine Crowe (1803-76). Until the present, this has been the only work of Kerner available in English. Apart from his many scientific publications and his poetry, Kerner was also the author of one of the more intriguing literary works of German Romanticism, Die Reiseschatten (Travel Shadows, 1811). Ostensibly an account of his travels through Germany and Austria following his graduation from the University of Tubingen, the book is a highly imaginative, almost surreal concoction of Romantic, sentimental, grotesque, satirical, and Old German folkloric elements. Attributed by Kerner to an itinerant "shadow performer" named Lux, Travel Shadows was inspired by the tradition of "Chinese Shadows" (ombres chinoises) and represents Kerner's attempt to create a travel narrative in the form of a grandiose shadow show. In the introduction to his translation of Travel Shadows - the first in English - Harold B. Segel situates Kerner's work in the context of the emergence of a German shadow show tradition in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Riot Report and the News: How the Kerner Commission Changed Media Coverage of Black America
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.94 $On July 28, 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson established the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders to investigate the causes of unrest in urban black communities during the 1960s. Chaired by Illinois governor Otto Kerner Jr., the commission ominously warned, "Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white―separate and unequal." And it aimed its sharpest criticism at the mainstream media, concluding: "The press has too long basked in a white world, looking out of it, if at all, with white men's eyes and a white perspective." Major news media responded by expanding and diversifying their coverage of black communities and increasing the number of African Americans in their newsrooms.Although much has been written about the Kerner Commission, the analysis has focused primarily on its affect on the American press. In The Riot Report and the News, Thomas J. Hrach instead explores how the commission came to its conclusions, in order to understand why and how its report served as a catalyst for change. Hrach finds that such government criticism of the media can have a long-term and positive influence on the nation, an insight that remains important as the news continues to struggle with how to cover issues of race.
