Er porträtierte so unterschiedliche Personen wie den Bewacher eines ehemaligen Stasi-Gefängnisses, den Filialleiter eines der neuen Supermärkte, die Heizer eines Kraftwerks, die Personenschützer eines Ministers und die Reinigungskräfte eines Regierungsgebäudes.Sein Buch Das letzte Jahr erschien 1992 bei BasisDruck Berlin, geriet dann aber in Vergessenheit. 2019 stieß Jan Wenzel bei seinen Recherchen für sein Buch Das Jahr 1990 freilegen auf Martin Gross und übernahm viele seiner Aufzeichnungen. Mit 30 Jahren Abstand wurden sie von der Kritik nun als 'hellsichtige', 'präzise', 'stilistisch brillante' Beobachtungen des Wendejahres wahrgenommen. Der Autor selbst war aber nicht auffindbar. Erst im Juni 2020 entstand auf Umwegen ein Kontakt, und die Neuausgabe des Titels konnte geplant werden.Martin Gross, geboren 1952 im Schwarzwald, ging 1970 nach West-Berlin. Ab 1981 arbeitete er als Lehrbeauftragter im Fach Germanistik und als Feuilletonist. Später dann als Koordinator für Projekte zwischen russischen, indischen und europäischen Universitäten. Heute lebt er in der Nähe von Lüneburg.
