In the Hand of the Holy Spirit: the Visionary Art of J. B. Murray
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.25 $In 1978 a seventy-year-old black farm worker in rural Glascock County, Georgia, received what he believed to be a call from God. Though unable to read or write, J. B. Murray began to draw and paint flowing abstractions under what he understood to be the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Over the next ten years, Murray created paintings of ghostly figures and elogated shapes that represented "the people what is living like God don't exist." By the time of his death in 1988, Murray's work had been shown in art galleries all over the world, from Atlanta, Washington DC, New York, and Los Angeles to London and Tokyo. How an illiterate farm worker in rural Georgia rose to become an artist of international acclaim is the story of Mary Padgelek's In the Hand of the Holy Spirit: The Visionary Art of J. B. Murray. Padgelek tells Murray's fascinating story and analyzes his art and spiritual message. Throughout history the visionary artist has sought to offer a glimpse of the eternal in the midst of a temporal world. This book unveils the symbols, impetus, and meaning of Murray's art. Padgelek shows how this fascinating folk artist expressed his perceptions of eternity and offered a redemptive metaphor for spiritual healing, regeneration, and ultimate salvation.

Pragmatism and the Meaning of Truth
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.32 $Pragmatism is the most famous single work of American philosophy. Its sequel, The Meaning of Truth, is its imperative and inevitable companion. The definitive texts of both works are here available for the first time in one volume, with an introduction by the distinguished contemporary philosopher A. J. Ayer.In Pragmatism James attacked the transcendental, rationalist tradition in philosophy and tried to clear the ground for the doctrine he called radical empiricism. When first published, the book caused an uproar. It was greeted with praise, hostility, ridicule. Determined to clarify his views, James collected nine essays he had written on this subject before he wrote Pragmatism and six written later in response to criticisms by Bertrand Russell and others. He published The Meaning of Truth in 1909, the year before his death. These two works show James at his best full of verve and good humor. Intent upon making difficult ideas clear, he is characteristically vigorous in his effort to make them prevail.

The Fog of Law: Pragmatism, Security, and International Law
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.98 $When and why are international rules binding? Focusing on questions of state security, The Fog of Law considers the nature of obligation in international law. In so doing, it challenges the prevailing theories of obligation based on natural law or positive law approaches. Michael J. Glennon argues for a pragmatist approach to international law―that international law has force when enough countries honor it. Using elements of rational choice theory, Glennon describes an international "frame of mind" that draws on the fluctuating network of incentives and disincentives surrounding international rules to explain states' uneven compliance. The Fog of Law defends its approach through discussions of key contemporary security issues, including the United Nations' use of force rules, security assurances, nuclear proliferation, and the new crime of aggression proposed for the International Criminal Court.

The Days We Danced: The Story of My Theatrical Family from Florenz Ziegfeld to Arthur Murray and Beyond
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 81.65 $With Joseph and Charles Eaton As Told to J.R. Morris At age fourteen, Doris Eaton was the youngest performer in the Ziegfeld Follies, appearing with such legends as Eddie Cantor, Fanny Brice, Will Rogers, and Marilyn Miller. With two sisters and two brothers also appearing in the Follies in the years between 1918 and 1923, the Eatons became a well-known Broadway family. Beginning their careers in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore area, the "Seven Little Eatons" became seasoned performers, working the stock-company circuit before arriving in New York City and being caught up in the golden age of Broadway. Doris and her two sisters, Pearl and Mary, became popular dancers, and throughout the twenties they were never out of work. Doris was the first Eaton to go to Hollywood, and there in 1929 she introduced the song "Singing in the Rain" in the Hollywood Music Box Review. Later, Doris left show business and went on to great success building a chain of eighteen Arthur Murray studios in Michigan, which she owned and operated for thirty years. In a refreshingly wise voice, The Days We Danced introduces readers to the successes and poignant sorrows of the Eaton family, including alcoholism, professional failures, early death, and even a tragic murder. With memories that span almost a century, Doris recalls the state of the American theater during World War I, the "roaring twenties," the Great Depression--as well as the legendary names of the rich and famous celebrities with whom the Eatons worked and played. Accompanied by scores of unique period photographs, this memoir details the life of a woman who never stopped dancing--even when the curtain fell.

A Short History of Chess by HJR Murray
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.81 $Among the papers left by the late H. J. R. Murray was the typeset of A Short History of Chess which he wrote in 1917. This was not an abridgment of the standard work he had published some years earlier but a new and original brief history of the game from its beginnings until 1866. It has been brought up to date by Mr. B. Goulding Brown and Mr. Harry Golombek, covering the periods from 1866 to almost the present including the modern World Championships. Also added to this reprint of the original work by HJR Murray is a section by Sam Sloan disagreeing with some of the findings of HJR Murray and with the claims by Murray that ancient Indian works in Sanskrit contain references to chess. According to Sam Sloan, those works in Sanskrit contain no references to chess. Rather there are even more ancient works in Chinese that contain references to various games but whether those games were similar to or related to chess is not known. It must also be noted that there is another book by Henry A. Davidson with the exact same title as this book but that other book is completely different and has no connection with this book.
