The Learned Ones: Nahua Intellectuals in Postconquest Mexico
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.99 $They were the healers, teachers, and writers, the “wise ones” of Nahuatl-speaking cultures in Mexico, remembered in painted codices and early colonial manuscripts of Mesoamerica as the guardians of knowledge. Yet they very often seem bound to an unrecoverable past, as stereotypes prevent some from linking the words “indigenous” and “intellectual” together. Not so, according to author Kelly S. McDonough, at least not for native speakers of Nahuatl, one of the most widely spoken and best-documented indigenous languages of the Americas. This book focuses on how Nahuas have been deeply engaged with the written word ever since the introduction of the Roman alphabet in the early sixteenth century. Dipping into distinct time periods of the past five hundred years, this broad perspective allows McDonough to show the heterogeneity of Nahua knowledge and writing as Nahuas took up the pen as agents of their own discourses and agendas. McDonough worked collaboratively with contemporary Nahua researchers and students, reconnecting the theorization of a population with the population itself. The Learned Ones describes the experience of reading historic text with native speakers today, some encountering Nahua intellectuals and their writing for the very first time. It intertwines the written word with oral traditions and embodied knowledge, aiming to retie the strand of alphabetic writing to the dynamic trajectory of Nahua intellectual work.

The Learned Ladies: Comedy in Five Acts, 1672 (English and French Edition)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.00 $Classic comedy / 5 m., 6 f. (doubling possible). / Int. This rollicking version of Les Femmes Savantes delighted audiences Off Broadway in a production starring Jean Stapleton as Philamente, a most unliterary lady intent on having a high toned literary salon. She has neither literary nor common sense, which makes her easy prey for sycophantic con artist Trissotin. He passes himself off as a famous poet and becomes a permanent house guest. Philamente hopes to marry her daughter to Trissotin, but the daughter wishes to marry the unsuitable Clitandre. This version strays from a strictly literal translation of Moliere's play, often employing anachronisms in the rhymed couplets that will appall purists and absolutely delight everyone else. If you want your audiences to roll with laughter as they watch a play by a "famous dead playwright," this version is for you. "Thomas' modernisms smartly put the satire's emphasis on the pomposity rather than the feminism of the Precieuse Movement." Variety. FEE: $75 per performance.

Learned Helplessness: A Theory for the Age of Personal Control
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.23 $When experience with uncontrollable events gives rise to the expectation that events in the future will also elude control, disruptions in motivation, emotion, and learning may ensue. "Learned helplessness" refers to the problems that arise in the wake of uncontrollability. First described in the 1960s among laboratory animals, learned helplessness has since been applied to a variety of human problems entailing inappropriate passivity and demoralization. While learned helplessness is best known as an explanation of depression, studies with both people and animals have mapped out the cognitive and biological aspects. The present volume, written by some of the most widely recognized leaders in the field, summarizes and integrates the theory, research, and application of learned helplessness. Each line of work is evaluated critically in terms of what is and is not known, and future directions are sketched. More generally, psychiatrists and psychologists in various specialties will be interested in the book's argument that a theory emphasizing personal control is of particular interest in the here and now, as individuality and control are such salient cultural topics.

The Learned Ladies (Drama Classics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 6.31 $“The Learned Ladies” was the last-but-one of Molière’s plays and the last of his great rhyming-couplet comedies. Its predecessors had used the artificiality of the style to add point and irony to some of Molière’s most trenchant examinations of aspects of the human condition. For lighter-hearted satire, sending up specific behaviour rather than the general human condition, Molière tended to use prose. “The Learned Ladies” has the best of both worlds: it satirises a specific fad (intellectual pretension) but – perhaps because its subject requires an appropriately “high style” – is written in rhyming verse. Targeting cultural snobbery, “The Learned Ladies” mocks the fashion, current among upper-class ladies, for holding “salons” to discuss such “learned” matters as the arts, philosophy and science. The joke, to Molière’s audience, was not merely intellectual snobbery, but that the snobs were women. This was an age when matters of the mind were, in theory, still the province of men; upper-class women were expected to be charming, witty, interested in the world and its doings, but not scholars. The majority of the aristocratic ladies in Molière’s own audience probably took this view and shared the opinion of the men, that “learned ladies” and their gatherings were fools, fit targets for the pedants, charlatans and other confidence-tricksters who preyed on them. “The Learned Ladies” played for a couple of dozen performances (a successful “run” for court plays at the time) and attracted none of the hostility and scandal of Molière’s more contentious works. This French-to-English translation is by A. R. Waller and is scrupulously accurate to Molière’s meaning.
