Johhan Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust, written between 1806 and 1831, was translated by Bayard Taylor in 1870 and published In 1871. It was illustrated by Harry Clarke in a 1925 edition published by Hartsdale House that was limited to 2,000 copies. Bayard Taylor’s translation preserves the beautiful, metered verse and rhyme of von Goethe’s adaptation of the legend of Dr. Faust. That translation is faithfully reproduced in this edition as are the famous Harry Clarke illustrations, which are credited with influencing the psychedelic art movement in the 1960's. The eight color plates are reproduced in black and white.

Goethe's most complex and profound work, Faust was the effort of the great poet's entire lifetime. Written over 60 years, it can be read as a document of Goethe's moral and artistic development. Faust is made available to the English reader in a completely new translation that communicates both its poetic variety and its many levels of tone. The language is present-day English, and Goethe's formal and rhythmic variety is reproduced in all its richness.

Faust Part One takes place in multiple settings, the first of which is Heaven. The demon Mephistopheles makes a bet with God: he says that he can lure God's favourite human being (Faust), who is striving to learn everything that can be known, away from righteous pursuits. The next scene takes place in Faust's study where Faust, despairing at the vanity of scientific, humanitarian and religious learning, turns to magic for the showering of infinite knowledge. He suspects, however, that his attempts are failing. Frustrated, he ponders suicide, but rejects it as he hears the echo of nearby Easter celebrations begin. He goes for a walk with his assistant Wagner and is followed home by a dog. In Faust's study, the dog transforms into Mephistopheles. Faust makes an arrangement with him: Mephistopheles will do everything that Faust wants while he is here on Earth, and in exchange Faust will serve the Devil in Hell. The translator, Randall Jarrell (1914 -1965) was an American poet, literary critic, children's author, essayist, and novelist. He was the 11th Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress-a position that now bears the title Poet Laureate of the United States. Among other honors, Jarrell was awarded the National Book Award for Poetry, in 1961.
