The Keeper: A Life of Saving Goals and Achieving Them
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 48.63 $In this inspiring, down-to-earth memoir the revered goalkeeper and American icon idolized by millions worldwide for his dependability, daring, and humility recounts his rise to stardom at the 2014 World Cup, the psychological and professional challenges he has faced, and the enduring faith that has sustained him.In The Keeper, the man who electrified the world with his amazing performance in Brazil does something he would never do on a soccer field: he drops his guard. As fiercely protective about his privacy as he is guarding the goal on the field, Howard opens up for the first time about how a hyperactive kid from New Jersey with Tourette’s syndrome defied the odds to become one of the world’s premier goalkeepers. The Keeper recalls his childhood, being raised by a single mother who instilled in him a love of sports and a devout Christian faith that helped him cope when he was diagnosed with Tourette’s in the fifth grade. He looks back over his fifteen-year professional career—from becoming the youngest player to win MLS Goalkeeper of the Year to his storied move to the English Premier League with Manchester United and his current team, Liverpool’s Everton, to becoming an overnight star after his record-making performance with the United States Men’s National Team. He also talks about the things closest to his heart—the importance of family and the Christian beliefs that guide him.Told in his thoughtful and articulate voice, The Keeper is an illuminating look at a remarkable man who is an inspirational role model for all of us.The Keeper is illustrated with two 8-page color photo inserts.

Lighthouses and Life-Saving on the Oregon Coast (OR) (Images of America)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.55 $The Oregon Coast has been the site of shipwrecks even before Lewis and Clark’s arrival in 1805. Even as the population grew, the federal government let the Oregon Coast go unguarded by lighthouses and lifesavers for decades. Economic and political pressures finally forced the government to build the first Oregon lighthouse in 1857 at the Umpqua River. The LifeSaving Service followed in 1878 with a station at the mouth of Coos Bay. Eventually, most of the harbor entrances and headlands were protected by both the Lighthouse Service and the LifeSaving Service, the precursor to today’s Coast Guard. Lighthouses and Lifesaving on the Oregon Coast commemorates the true heroes who served to warn, protect, and rescue those who went to sea.

Us Life Saving Service: Heroes, Rescues, and Architecture of the Early Coast Guard
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.35 $U.S. Life-Saving Service: Heroes, Rescues and Architecture of the Early Coast Guard is the winner of the first Foundation for Coast Guard History Award in the category Best Book on Coast Guard History. This is the saga of the rescues, boats, equipment and stations. These were courageous early Coast Guard surfmen whose regulations said they had to go out no matter how storm-tossed the sea; the regulations did not say anything about coming back. The stories are unique and unforgettable. There was the brilliant and beautiful woman who changed the world s rescue work...the lone survivor of a life-saving crew...the day the surfmen saved the Wright brother s plane...the night Marconi filed the sky with strange sights and sounds and sent surfmen running...the unsung women rescuers...the strange dream that foretold a shipwreck...the surfman who traveled 25,000 miles in a survival suit. The book is richly illustrated with rare, fine photographs of nearly every American life-saving station drawn from the archives of the Coast Guard, National Park Service, National Archives, universities and private collections, nearly all published for the first time. There is state by state coverage of the Atlantic Coast, Pacific Coast, and Great Lakes. J. Revell Carr, long-time director of Mystic Seaport Museum described U.S. Life-Saving Service, as a book of extraordinary drama intriguing to anyone with an interest in the sea or in American architecture. Colin MacKenzie, director of the Natural Research Center called the book highly readable with great stories of life-saving. The best book by far on the subject.

United States Life-Saving Service in Michigan
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.43 $Michigan, the Great Lakes State, is full of rich maritime traditions and with these traditions comes the danger and risk of shipwreck. Author William D. Peterson has compiled in this new book a photographic history of the United States Life-Saving Service in the Great Lakes region, and immortalizes in it the men who paved the way for the U.S. Coast Guard in 1915. In 1854, the U.S. Government provided funds for lighthouses, boats, and life-saving equipment along the Atlantic seaboard to alleviate shipping disasters. These early efforts greatly reduced the number of lives and property lost to shipwrecks. In the heart of the Midwest, however, the Great Lakes alone claimed 4,500 vessels, 1,300 people, and more than 27 million dollars in monetary damages between 1855 and 1876. These staggering losses prompted Congress to pass legislation putting the United States Life-Saving Service (USLSS) into operation in Michigan and other Great Lakes States. Pictured here in almost 200 images and detailed captions are Michigan's 38 USLSS stations and their crews along the Great Lakes, including Ottawa Point, Grand Haven, Holland, and South Manitou Island.

As I Walk: Unlocking the Life-Saving Power of Perspective
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.98 $At the age of 20, Brandon Grimm was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the pituitary gland. The ensuing surgery removed a large portion of the tumor; however, residual tumor was located a few months later. After recovering from the surgery, Brandon was diagnosed with the rare and chronic disease, Acromegaly. This disease causes too much growth hormone to be produced in Brandon's body which reduces life expectancy by several years if left untreated. Over the last 14 years, Brandon has received over 4,000 injections to reduce the level of growth hormone and restore life expectancy back to normal range. This book documents his experiences, including battles with anxiety, fear, doubt & hopelessness. Brandon provides a first-hand account of how God provides all of us with the tools needed to overcome these relentless enemies. In this book, you will unlock the life-saving power of perspective regardless of your current circumstances and learn how to find freedom in fear, belief in doubt and light in the darkness. Brandon also provides practical applications for unleashing the power of a new perspective by doing instead of having, focusing on how well instead of how long and what it means to sacrifice for the benefit of others.

Guarding Door County : Lighthouses And Life-saving Stations
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.78 $Jutting out of Wisconsin into the blue waters of Lake Michigan, the scenic peninsula of Door County is endowed with the longest coastline of any county in the nation. Since the mid-1800s, the region has boasted a strong maritime industry, dependent on the constant vigilance and efforts of U.S. Coast Guard units. The county has been home to as many as 12 historic light stations, as well as three life-saving stations. Beginning with Pottawatomie Light in 1837 and Sturgeon Bay Canal Life-Saving Station in 1886, keepers and surfmen survived both boredom and peril to ensure safe navigation and commerce, while rescuing those in distress. Through archival photographs, stories ofshipwrecks, rescues, service, and pride spring to life. Rare rescue images of the Otter, a schooner which wrecked in 1895, are especially noteworthy.
