The Long Road to Stockholm: The Story of Magnetic Resonance Imaging - An Autobiography
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.81 $In this autobiography, Sir Peter Mansfield describes his life from war time childhood that initially sparked his interest in physics to his work in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that eventually led to the award of the Nobel Prize in 2003. Peter Mansfield grew up in London, but was evacuated to Devon during the blitz and following the V1 and V2 attacks on London. At the end of hostilities, he worked briefly in the printing industry before deciding to pursue his real interests in science by joining the Rocket Propulsion Department at Westcott near Aylesbury. Following a period of National Service and his studies at Queen Mary College, University of London, he married and moved to the USA for two years, returning in 1964 as a Lecturer in Physics at the University of Nottingham. In 1972 he spent a sabbatical period in Heidelberg, and during this period corresponded with his student, Peter Grannell, in Nottingham on the novel idea of magnetic resonance imaging. This led to his first paper on MRI which was presented at the first Specialised Colloque Ampere in 1973. During this period, he demonstrated how the MRI radio signals can be analysed and turned into images of the body. In 2003 the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded jointly to Sir Peter and Paul Lauterbur for their crucial achievements in the development of MRI.

A Long Road (Volume I): An Acupuncture Travelogue (Volume 1)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 59.31 $The best way to learn the art of Oriental Medicine is by direct transmission in the clinic - seeing, feeling, sensing, and being part of the treatment process - through a relationship with someone familiar with the road you are on. A Long Road: An Acupuncture Travelogue provides snapshots of steps along the road by the author in his development over many years as a busy practitioner. The real sense of living, dynamic treatment is conveyed through the author’s obvious dedication and delight in pursuing and transmitting understanding of this art. The more so by the inclusion of conversation transcripts between the author and his students through which the reader is offered the chance to benefit from a sense of the sensei/ deshi (student/ teacher) relationship. In-depth articles cover specific conditions, treatment concepts, diagnostic nuance, case histories and discussion on point meaning and use. The classical texts are explored with translation & commentary and brought to vibrant clinical relevance to the extent that the text could almost be viewed as a clinical work-book. To be consulted, for inspiration and guidance – and to be sweated over in study – but mostly (and importantly) in clinical practice. This text is recommended for practitioners of all ‘styles’ or ‘methods’ as a path away from the unfortunate tendency to intellectualize oriental medicine and thus trap it in the classroom or lecture theatre. The reader is offered a bridge between classical theory/ training, and the vibrant reality of the clinical practice of acupuncture, moxabustion and traditional massage.

The Long Road to Freedom: The Story of Wang Mingdao
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 52.52 $The founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 turned a brand new page of Chinese history. For Wang Mingdao, this was an extraordinary time. Living under harsh conditions and cruel realities of the Japanese occupation, he fought a fierce spiritual battle between life and death and won a glorious victory. Brothers and sisters who deeply loved the Lord offered their heart-felt thanksgiving for him and the precious lessons they learned from his struggle and victory. But soon, a new and tougher battle was dawning on him. We follow his personal journey set against the backdrop of the rise of communism throughout a changing China and the gradual exertion of pressure upon religious freedom. Christians were urged to embrace a liberalism which robbed the Gospel message of its power. Wang Mingdao resisted any such dilution of the faith. Wang Mingdao was constantly subjected to false accusations, yet he persistently and unwaveringly proclaimed the truth of God's word, refusing to compromise. Eventually the authorities arrested him on false charges and imprisoned him. After battling and appealing unsuccessfully against the authorities, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. What he did not realize was that the end of the man was the starting point of God. His life had entered a new stage from this point on... Wang Mingdao constantly urged Christians to "...face change with the unchangeable, prepare for ordinary times as extraordinary, and live in extraordinary days as in ordinary times." His words are true and relevant for us today and every Christian will be able to draw inspiration from this great man of God.

The Long Road to Gold
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.00 $I entered the New York Police Academy in 1965 and my first assignment was to the 23rd Precinct and then 13th Precinct on patrol and also with their Anti- Crime Unit. In 1970 I attended the Criminal Investigations Course and was assigned to Plainclothes duties with the Organized Crime Control Bureau investigating Gambling, Prostitution and Narcotics violations in Queens County. In 1974 I was transferred to the Special Operations Section. This unit was tasked with the investigation and surveillance of the Five New York Crime Families (Gambino, Columbo, Genovese, Giganti and Luchese). For several months I operated in an undercover capacity posing as a corrupt officer during which time the operation netted over $50,000 in cash and merchandise including an all- expense paid trip to Las Vegas for myself and my partner. We were being tested to see if we really were corrupt. As a result of this investigation over 40 members of Organized Crime were arrested and convicted. In 1979 I was promoted to Detective 3rd Grade and transferred to Queens County District Attorney’s Squad, where I continued my investigations of Organized Crime with the investigation of John Gotti and his crime family. This investigation led to my promotion to Detective 2nd Grade. In 1985 I retired after 20 years of service.I now reside in Pennsylvania with my wife, Bonnie and for the past five years have been working Part-time evaluating persons who have been arrested for DUI, at the Monroe County DUI Association. I have also been the President of the National Police Defense Foundation, for the past 25 years. This book is dedicated to the many fine officers with whom I worked over the years doing a job I loved.

Long Road to Mercy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.98 $Introducing a remarkable new character from #1 New York Times bestselling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat . . . and an old nightmare.Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. She never saw Mercy again.Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon. So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon-and its rider missing-Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she's abruptly called off the case. If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it..."Love it!" --Lisa Gardner"Atlee Pine is unforgettable." --James Patterson"David Baldacci's best yet." --Lisa Scottoline "Heart-poundingly suspenseful." --Scott Turow"A stunning debut." --Douglas Preston "A perfect blend of action, secrets, and conspiracies." --Steve Berry"Baldacci is at the top of his game." --Kathy Reichs

The Long Road of War: A Marine's Story of Pacific Combat
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 42.41 $James W. Johnston was a self-confessed small-town youth, who like so many others patriotically stopped what he was doing and enlisted shortly after Pearl Harbor. Johnston chose the Marines, a decision that sent him to years of bloody combat through the Pacific as Allied troops fought their way toward the Japanese home islands. Many did not come back; of those who did, very few have told us what it was like. Johnston tells us directly and honestly, taking us with his First Marine Division through New Guinea, New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa.

Long Road to Hard Truth: The 100 Year Mission to Create the National Museum of African American History and Culture
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.55 $In Long Road to Hard Truth: The 100 Year Mission to Create the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Robert L. Wilkins tells the story of how his curiosity about why there wasn't a national museum dedicated to African American history and culture became an obsession-eventually leading him to quit his job as an attorney when his wife was seven months pregnant with their second child, and make it his mission to help the museum become a reality. Long Road to Hard Truth chronicles the early history, when staunch advocates sought to create a monument for Black soldiers fifty years after the end of the Civil War and in response to the pervasive indignities of the time, including lynching, Jim Crow segregation, and the slander of the racist film Birth of a Nation. The movement soon evolved to envision creating a national museum, and Wilkins follows the endless obstacles through the decades, culminating in his honor of becoming a member of the Presidential Commission that wrote the plan for creating the museum and how, with support of both Black and White Democrats and Republicans, Congress finally authorized the museum. In September 2016, exactly 100 years after the movement to create it began, the Smithsonian will open the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The book's title is inspired in part by James Baldwin, who testified in Congress in 1968 that "My history... contains the truth about America. It is going to be hard to teach it." Long Road to Hard Truth concludes that this journey took 100 years because many in America are unwilling to confront the history of America's legacy of slavery and discrimination, and that the only reason this museum finally became a reality is that an unlikely, bipartisan coalition of political leaders had the courage and wisdom to declare that America could not, and should not, continue to evade the hard truth.
