Mechanics of Lorentz Transformations
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.84 $The subject of this book is the mechanics of Lorentz transformations which is commonly investigated under the title of special relativity theory. The motive for setting the subject of investigation as Lorentz transformations instead of special relativity is objectivity. However, we also investigate special relativity thoroughly as a possible interpretation of the mechanics of Lorentz transformations. The book originates from a collection of personal notes and tutorials about topics and applications related to modern physics and tensor calculus. The book includes many solved problems as well as extensive sets of exercises whose solutions are available in another book. The book also contains a number of high quality graphic illustrations. A rather thorough index is also added to the book to enable keyword search and provide a useful list for the main technical terms of this subject. Cross referencing is used extensively where these cross references are hyperlinked in the digital versions. The book can be used as a guiding text or as a reference for a first course on the mechanics of Lorentz transformations or as part of a course on modern physics or tensor calculus or even special relativity.

Renormalization: From Lorentz to Landau (and Beyond)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.19 $The purpose of this section is to give you a sketch of how quantum field theory works, where Feynman graphs come from and why they are so useful, where the infinities come from, and how we have learned to deal with them without compromising the physical principles involved. I am purposely treating the problem at the level of the 1940s and 1950s, so as to keep the basic ideas clear and avoid the more difficult problems and more sophisticated methods of recent years. I shall relate my discussion simply to quantum electrodynamics (QED) since that is the most familiar case and the case that was in the forefront from the beginning (though in fact I shall ignore many of the special complications that have to be dealt with when you quantize a gauge field). The methods I shall be describing are applicable to all sorts of quantized fields: the detailed factors are different but the structure of the logical development isjust the same. Not surprisingly, though, the renormalization procedure breaks down if the theory in question is nonrenormalizable. Whether nonrenormalizable theories are theories at all is a matter for debate; in any case, they hold no practical interest for physicists since they are essentially unusable. Quantum electrodynamics was devised in 1927 by Dirac, less than a year after the Schrodinger equation appeared and before the Dirac equa tion for the relativistic electron had been invented.

Representations of the Rotation and Lorentz Groups and Their Applications
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 56.54 $This monograph on the description and study of representations of the rotation group of three-dimensional space and of the Lorentz group features advanced topics and techniques crucial to many areas of modern theoretical physics. Prerequisites include a familiarity with the differential and integral calculus of several variables and the fundamentals of linear algebra. Suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematical physics, the book is also designed for mathematicians studying the representations of Lie groups, for whom it can serve as an introduction to the general theory of representation. The treatment encompasses all the basic material of the theory of representations used in quantum mechanics. The two-part approach begins with representations of the group of rotations of three-dimensional space, analyzing the rotation group and its representations. The second part, covering representations of the Lorentz group, includes an exploration of relativistic-invariant equations. The text concludes with three helpful supplements and a bibliography.

Bedevilment of Elizabeth Lorentz
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.47 $Elizabeth Lorentz was a young maid servant in early modern Germany who believed herself to be tormented by the devil, and who was eventually brought to trial in 1667. The trial grappled with the question of whether Lorentz was a willing accomplice of the devil or suffering from melancholy as a result of her previous sins. To provide readers with historical context, Morton includes an introduction to the early modern issues of demonic pact, possession, and spiritual melancholy, and as a supplement, a contemporary record of demonic possession of another young woman. The Bedevilment of Elizabeth Lorentz provides excellent insight into the complexities of Protestant attitudes to melancholy and the Devil, and into the circumstances of young women in early modern Europe.

Group Theory And General Relativity: Representations Of The Lorentz Group And Their Applications To The Gravitational Field
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 14.45 $This is the only book on the subject of group theory and Einstein's theory of gravitation. It contains an extensive discussion on general relativity from the viewpoint of group theory and gauge fields. It also puts together in one volume many scattered, original works, on the use of group theory in general relativity theory. There are twelve chapters in the book. The first six are devoted to rotation and Lorentz groups, and their representations. They include the spinor representation as well as the infinite-dimensional representations. The other six chapters deal with the application of groups -particularly the Lorentz and the SL(2, C) groups -- to the theory of general relativity. Each chapter is concluded with a set of problems. The topics covered range from the fundamentals of general relativity theory, its formulation as an SL(2, C) gauge theory, to exact solutions of the Einstein gravitational field equations. The important Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group, and its representations, conclude the book. The entire book is self-contained in both group theory and general relativity theory, and no prior knowledge of either is assumed. The subject of this book constitutes a relevant link between field theoreticians and general relativity theoreticians, who usually work rather independently of each other. The treatise is highly topical and of real interest to theoretical physicists, general relativists and applied mathematicians. It is invaluable to graduate students and research workers in quantum field theory, general relativity and elementary particle theory.

Constructive Approximation : Advanced Problems
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.91 $In the last 30 years, Approximation Theory has undergone wonderful develop ment, with many new theories appearing in this short interval. This book has its origin in the wish to adequately describe this development, in particular, to rewrite the short 1966 book of G. G. Lorentz, "Approximation of Functions." Soon after 1980, R. A. DeVore and Lorentz joined forces for this purpose. The outcome has been their "Constructive Approximation" (1993), volume 303 of this series. References to this book are given as, for example rCA, p.201]. Later, M. v. Golitschek and Y. Makovoz joined Lorentz to produce the present book, as a continuation of the first. Completeness has not been our goal. In some of the theories, our exposition offers a selection of important, representative theorems, some other cases are treated more systematically. As in the first book, we treat only approximation of functions of one real variable. Thus, functions of several variables, complex approximation or interpolation are not treated, although complex variable methods appear often.

Semi-Riemannian Geometry With Applications to Relativity (Volume 103) (Pure and Applied Mathematics, Volume 103)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 65.95 $This book is an exposition of semi-Riemannian geometry (also called pseudo-Riemannian geometry)--the study of a smooth manifold furnished with a metric tensor of arbitrary signature. The principal special cases are Riemannian geometry, where the metric is positive definite, and Lorentz geometry. For many years these two geometries have developed almost independently: Riemannian geometry reformulated in coordinate-free fashion and directed toward global problems, Lorentz geometry in classical tensor notation devoted to general relativity. More recently, this divergence has been reversed as physicists, turning increasingly toward invariant methods, have produced results of compelling mathematical interest.
